2024, Day 130 (May 9) Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, THE DISTANCE It’s hard to believe that Bob Seger only had one song that topped the Billboard singles chart in his career and that song, “Shakedown,” has been called one of his worst singles. Hell, the song he seems most known for, “Old Time Rock and Roll,” only made it to number 28. By 1982, he had already released eleven albums and had 21 singles that had made it into Billboard’s Top 100. THE DISTANCE, would be his twelfth studio work. He had a good string of platinum selling albums up to this point but this one seemed to signal a bit of a cooling off period. He would only release one other album during the rest of the 80s. THE DISTANCE, for me, was a bit more mellow than previous albums. The opener, “Even Now” and the closer, “Little Victories” are the highlights, though “Shame On The Moon” is a nice slice of heartland rock poetry like only Seger could deliver. “Makin’ Thunderbirds” is another classic. He never seemed to get as much critical attention in comparison to contemporaries such as Springsteen or Mellencamp. John Cougar Mellencamp - Scarecrow (1985) This is the eighth studio album from John Mellencamp, and the album dealt with themes of the American dream falling into corporate greed, and the message was clear by the mid 1980’s. John himself said while writing and recording the album that his songwriting became more clear to him, and what he was trying to convey in song message. The album peaked at number 2 on the US Billboard 200, and released three top ten hit singles including “Lonely Ol’ Night”, R.O.C.K. In the U.S.A.”, and “Small Town”. By far my favorite John Mellencamp album, and I always put this one on thinking about what the state of the nation is currently going through. Sam’s Town - The Killers (September 27, 2006) 4 1/2 out of 5 Stans When The Killers released Sam’s Town in 2006, they were coming off the massive success of their iconic debut album, Hot Fuss, which had entrenched them firmly in the iPods of millennials everywhere. Their second record turned out to be an interesting departure from the slick, synth-heavy style of Hot Fuss though and instead embraced a more rock-oriented sound with a touch of Americana. The album is drenched in Springsteen-esque imagery, with themes of small-town life, longing, and self-discovery. The opening title track sets the stage with its driving guitars and energetic rhythm. It’s an anthem that announces The Killers’ new direction, with frontman Brandon Flowers’s vocals soaring with passion and intensity.
