2024, Day 130 (May 9) Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, THE DISTANCE It’s hard to believe that Bob Seger only had one song that topped the Billboard singles chart in his career and that song, “Shakedown,” has been called one of his worst singles. Hell, the song he seems most known for, “Old Time Rock and Roll,” only made it to number 28. By 1982, he had already released eleven albums and had 21 singles that had made it into Billboard’s Top 100. THE DISTANCE, would be his twelfth studio work. He had a good string of platinum selling albums up to this point but this one seemed to signal a bit of a cooling off period. He would only release one other album during the rest of the 80s. THE DISTANCE, for me, was a bit more mellow than previous albums. The opener, “Even Now” and the closer, “Little Victories” are the highlights, though “Shame On The Moon” is a nice slice of heartland rock poetry like only Seger could deliver. “Makin’ Thunderbirds” is another classic. He never seemed to get as much critical attention in comparison to contemporaries such as Springsteen or Mellencamp.
