In an old backcountry cabin, I held a guitar covered with names, much like the walls around me. Hundreds of names were scratched and written into the wood, each one a testament to those who had passed through. As I sat there, strumming the few remaining strings, I thought about the lives that had intersected with this special place. I wondered about each name and their story of dreams and adventures that began or were paused in this humble shelter. The guitar had been played by many hands, creating memories that echoed through the woods. The warmth of laughter and quiet reflections shared here were encapsulated in the notes that once floated from this instrument. Got some more banjo tunes for y'uns. These are two songs I've been working on to learn the Round Peak style of clawhammer banjo. The first tune is a Bob Carlin transcription of "John Brown's Dream" as played by Tommy Jarrell (open G tuning). The second tune is another Carlin transcription of "Roustabout" as played by Fred Cockerham (drop C tuning). The style takes its name from a small town in Surry County, NC where it was popular at community dances and house parties. Round Peak banjo emphasizes driving melodic lines, often mimicking the fiddle. I’m punting Christmas albums to the end of the alphabet so we’re moving on to Classic #CountryMusic on the ABCs of #bigpootsalbumoftheday. Disclaimer: I grew up on country, and it’s part of what made me a theatre artist, oddly enough, because it’s a storyteller’s medium. If you’re not a country fan, please don’t unfollow. Just ignore me for a while and we’ll be into Dance and Funk before you know it. 😂 #Alabama was founded in Fort Payne, AL in 1969 by #RandyOwen and cousin #TeddyGentry. I don’t need to tell you that they’re the most successful band in country music history, but I just did. With over 40 #1 hits and 75 million #records sold, their #MountainMusic has reached around the world. Their blend of pop, bluegrass, folk, and #SouthernRock made for huge crossover success over their 50+ year career. #JohnAnderson has one of the most common names imaginable but his sound is uniquely #WildAndBlue. His twang is certainly #Swingin, but he was a teenage rocker back in Florida, influenced by Hendrix and the Stones. His 1992 #SeminoleWind #album, buoyed by the single #StraightTequilaNight, was one of my favorite LPs of the decade, and his 2020 album “Years” (pictured here) was produced by #TheBlackKeys’ Dan Auerbach. #ChetAtkins is widely acknowledged as one of the great #guitar pickers of all time, known as #MrGuitar. He was a primary architect of the #NashvilleSound and, as a bigwig at #RCA records, produced for some of the biggest acts of all time. He is responsible for much of country’s crossover appeal in the latter half of the 20th century and was accordingly inducted into the #RockAndRoll Hall of Fame. #RazzyBailey scored 5 number-one hits for RCA records in the early 80s, but my favorite was “Loving Up A Storm”. And check out those curls. #BaillieAndTheBoys were a popular country trio started in 1987 by Kathie Baillie, husband Michael Bonagura, and friend Alan LaBoeuf. They were one of my favorite bands when I was 12 years old. Kathie’s voice is sublime, like clear glass and smooth silk had a baby. Songs like #TurnTheTide, “Oh, Heart”, #LongShot, #Perfect, and #HeartofStone are highlights of the era. #vinylcollection #music

The Saylors didn’t have your typical Mother’s Day weekend. On Friday morning our house went under contract, which meant moving kicked into high gear. It wasn’t all work, as we got to enjoy a view of the northern lights Friday night, Landon had a Tball game Saturday, and he’s finally all in on riding his bike! This weekend’s biggest accomplishment was cleaning everything out of our crawl space storage and taking 2 trailer loads of stuff to our storage unit at Lake Wylie. So as we sit here tonight and reflect on a crazy weekend, I promised @kari.saylor a spa day once this is all over next month. Happy Mother’s Day to my amazing wife, and to all the other mothers out there. We’d certainly be lost without you!
