Vehicle free Wednesdays in Cades Cove are BACK!!! These days were the highlight of last year. Nothing feels better than running away from my computer to go walk around the cove and bump into friends and watch the light glide over the hills. Most commonly quoted statistic of the evening was “How many bears have you seen?” 6. “We saw 13!” Ok fine, we know when we’ve been out-bear’d.

How I feel knowing it's officially been 3 years since I came back home to the Blue Ridge. 🥹 Living in the suburbs of Charlotte, NC for a decade was difficult for me. I never truly felt settled or like I “fit in” anywhere, and my bones ached to return to the mountains. It took a good long while, but it was worth the wait. I'm thriving and thankful and content. In early April, there was snow in the higher elevations and wildflowers blooming in the fields. Book #6 of 2024: “Demon Copperhead” by Barbara Kingsolver ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ This was a special one. * For me, it’s Charles Dickens meets Mark Twain. It’s a modern-day re-telling of “David Copperfield” featuring a main character with all the scrappiness of Huck Finn. Born into poverty amid the Tri-State region of Appalachia, young Damon (Demon is his nickname) recounts his life growing up until the time he begins adulthood. This is his story, and it is nothing short of an epic at roughly 550 pages. The road here is long & it gets really dark. Damon must navigate a wide range of forces that set him up for failure: a drug addict mother and abusive stepfather, the horribly negligent foster care system and sketchy foster parents, homelessness, and ultimately—the opioid crisis to which he himself becomes a victim to in the book’s second half. Heavy, but ultimately redemptive. * It’s no mystery why this book won the Pulitzer Prize last year. To be a re-telling, this book felt so original. Kingsolver’s prose is wonderful and while it took me the first couple hundred pages to adjust to the narration, I found myself completely absorbed into the story by page 200. * This was my first Kingsolver. I understand, however, her fiction includes commentary on real issues and that certainly is at play here. However, it didn’t ever come across as “preachy” to me. There’s class commentary as well as conversations surrounding the history of Appalachia that made my history teacher heart swell. As you read, pay attention to episodes in the book where the Confederate flag symbols and the Whiskey Rebellion were referenced. It was totally unexpected but eye-opening together. Additionally, given the content of drug abuse & pure Appalachian spirit, pair this book with some Childers or a throwback playlist from the 90s/early 2000s playlist to fit the setting of the book. * Do I recommend “Demon Copperhead”? Absolutely. I believe this book will leave me thinking about it for days to come. I wanted to read this book because 1. I love Dolly Parton and 2. I was interested in reading about her thoughts and stories behind some of her more famous songs over the years. As much as I wanted to love this book, I just didn’t click with it. The book is very fragmented and doesn’t flow very well in my opinion. This hurts because some of the stories she tells about these songs are truly interesting, but it doesn’t go in a linear fashion like typical memoirs, which I’m not sure if that was the point or not. I was hoping more of 12 songs I did from the beginning of my career to now and here’s I got from then to now and the stories that went with it and that just didn’t happen. I felt like she went back and forth between time periods as she remembered it. Which is how most people talk about things when they’re remembering stuff but it just didn’t work as a book. Happy little moment after a lonnngg drive for work this AM but at the delivery site I got a chance to do a little #foraging. Found some #WildLettuce a great #MedicinalPlant for pain relief and sedation. This variety had a purple flower which I am so far unfamiliar with so I’ll do some researching on that soon! The majority of the #medicinal compounds are found in the sticky, milky sap, a type of natural latex I believe (so CAUTION IF YOU HAVE A LATEX ALLERGY or one to the MARIGOLD FAMILY) Another name due to its effects and alkaloid compounds which interact on our body’s #opioid receptors is #Opium Lettuce but.. I assure you, like all plants in the lettuce family, it is a VERY MILD opioid ( more potent alkaloid levels have been bred out of our common garden lettuces, but they still have them) wild lettuce is a bit weaker even than the popular tea esque #Kratom tree which still is a very mild opiod (which typically takes several grams to equal even the weak prescription opioid pills, but interestingly in spite of some states banning it and an effort on the #Federal level to do the same, remains a vital medicine for individuals seeking to get off prescription pain pills and street #drugs like #heroin and #fentanyl , many attributing it to saving their lives). Wild Lettuce has been used as a #FolkMedicine for a long, long time, both by North American #Indians and #AmericanSettlers alike and still used today, I’ve even found it for sale in a #medicine shop near me. The stems and leaves are often smoked when dried but arguably the most effective way to prepare it is to extract the sap via water soaking and once the #plant material is filtered to a tar like substance which can then be used as is, smoked, or made into a #tincture. Many people use it for things like #arthritis , #anxiety , and #insomnia . While some folks in #Appalachia continue to use it as a social #smoking #herb much like #tobacco.
