The Boone Boomerang: a phenomenon reserved for a quaint mountain town in the top west corner of North Carolina, during which those who have graduated from App State return to Boone and experience the college-town lifestyle from a new perspective. This phenomenon has called both recent graduates and professors back to the whispering mountain wind and the dining-hall-tray-sled winters. For some, however, the Boonerang hooks them in before they’ve even left Boone after graduation. According to a Forbes survey of 1,000 college students, graduates and hiring managers, 78% of students felt taking a gap year helped them determine what they wanted to do with their career. Of the hiring managers, 67% believed gap years were beneficial and 80% believed them to have an impact on personal growth. For those wanting a break before jumping into the workforce by taking a gap year after graduation or staying in Boone until their lease is up, Boone has much to offer in terms of ways to fill time without homework or class to attend. OPINION: For students graduating in May, the prospect of finding a job after graduation can be daunting. Whether graduates are staying in Boone to work, or moving to a new city to find a job there, this process is difficult for everyone. Graduates are faced with a completely new stage of life and thrown into a job market they may know nothing about. On Aug. 22, 2022, Silva Keohulian packed her bags, said goodbye to her family and left her home in Lebanon to go to a place she had never heard of before: Boone, North Carolina. Keohulian is a 24-year-old Fulbright Scholar who is graduating with a master’s degree in mathematics from App State in May. In the 2023-24 academic year, App State had 110 international students studying at the university, according to the international student and scholar services and outreach. “I haven’t heard of App State, honestly, but a friend of mine had been here and he talked good things about the department and everything so I put that on the list,” Keohulian said. Vidhi Patel, a graduate student from Khambhat, India pursuing a master’s degree in computer science, said she came to App State because of family connections in North Carolina. “My aunt lives in North Carolina,” Patel said. “So I was trying to get nearby some places and then I came up to see this App State.” Read more in the story by @andrew.riceee at the link in our bio. A public input session for phase two of the Boone Greenway skatepark project was hosted April 18 at the Watauga County Public Library. During the session, public attendees were able to speak and ask questions about the expansion of the existing Boone Greenway Skatepark. Boone Greenway Skatepark originally opened in November 2021 and currently contains a concrete skate pad with half-pipe ramps, according to the website. Expansions being proposed will include a bowl to skateboard in, a shaded area and more recreation space. The session was hosted by JP Pardy of Recess and Laney Wise, the grants coordinator for the Town of Boone. The expansions will be backed by local funding and a grant from the Town of Boone that will match the funds brought in by Pardy and local businesses. “The grant we’re going for right here is part of the North Carolina Parks and Rec Department,” Wise said. “It’s basically a 50-50 match.” Read more in the story by @Starry.drive at the link in our bio. In September 2007, Watauga County began construction on a new high school, a project that ultimately led to a change in the distribution of sales tax in Watauga County in 2013. The change has cost Boone a total of $49 million, according to Amy Davis, Boone’s town manager, and since then, the county and town have faced ongoing disagreements, including a lawsuit, regarding sales tax that mirrors another from 1987. Prior to 2013, Watauga County distributed sales tax based on a per capita method. The county switched to an ad valorem method at a County Board of Commissioners meeting on April 16, 2013. An ad valorem tax distribution method means that money is being distributed based on property value. They signed that the resolution go into effect beginning in the 2013-14 fiscal year, and remain in effect unless changed by another resolution. Davis said having 20,000 residents and an additional 20,000 students places a demand on infrastructure. Todd Castle, a Watauga County commissioner since 2022 and IT employee of App State football, said the only population that the per capita method benefits is the Town of Boone.
