Jake Blount (he/they) is an award-winning old-time banjoist, fiddler, singer and scholar based in Washington, DC. Blount specializes in the music of Black and Native American communities in the southeastern United States, and in the regional style of Ithaca, New York. His teachers include Rhiannon Giddens, Bruce Molsky and Judy Hyman. He has claimed first place in both the Banjo and the Traditional Band categories at the prestigious Appalachian String Band Music Festival in Clifftop, WV. He has shared his music and research at the Smithsonian Institution, Yale University, and Berklee School of Music, as well as numerous other venues and institutions. Blount tours domestically and internationally as a solo performer, with his duo Tui, and with his band The Moose Whisperers. Taking their name from a children’s fantasy novel, Doran is a four-person freak folk collective hailing from rural Virginia, New York City, and the Pacific Northwest. From strong backgrounds in traditional Appalachian ballad singing, Eastern European choral music, close harmony arrangement, and original songwriting, Doran’s music is intimately collaborative, bolstered by their knowledge of folk music and folklore and their exploration of deep listening and improvisation. Rich and often eerie vocal harmonies are supported by sparse acoustic arrangements ranging from sorrowful to playful. Doran’s layered, searching music reaches into the spaces between self and other, past and future, inner landscape and outer, and returns with a new language to describe the journey.
