Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner Rating: I enjoyed it Michelle Zauner is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist but she’s also a daughter. In Crying in H Mart, Michelle shares her experiences growing up in a Korean household in the US, her complicated relationship with her mother, helping her mother through her terminal illness, and living life with grief. Is it Nonfiction November because this is my second memoir post this month! I will never give a star rating on a memoir but I really enjoyed Michelle’s book. I think that because of her songwriting abilities this book, while tragic and somber, is beautifully written. I found myself equal parts sad and hungry. I enjoyed the audiobook as it’s read by Michelle herself. This book does contain a parent’s terminal illness, death, and grief so be sure to check your triggers. One other suggestion I have after making the mistake myself- maybe avoid reading this one around Mother’s Day. One thing I have in common with Michelle and this book is that my family too celebrates and mourns with food. Favorite dishes are often the center of any get together. 🍲 Does your family have a special recipe or tradition around food? Thanks to Sara @surereads for buddy reading this one with me. I’m glad I didn’t have to go through this one alone 💜 #memoir #nonfiction #nonfictionbooks #nonfictionreads #memoirs #bookreview #bookreviewer #bookreader #bookrecommendation #bookrecommendations #bookrecs #aapiheritagemonth #buddyread #buddyreads #audiobook #audiobooks #cryinginhmart #michellezauner

Recently, I listened to @armchairexppod and was riveted to the episode with @patricgagne who is a therapist and a sociopath. In her memoir, titled Sociopath, Gagne is undeniably honest about a disorder that has been maligned by mental health professionals for decades. Sociopath details Gagne’s journey of discovering love and realizing that she and the millions of Americans who share her diagnosis are not monsters. Sociopath: A Memoir is a fascinating and brave book. Kissing Girls on Shabbot: A Memoir – Book Review⁣ ⁣ Dr. Sara Glass opened up her world, her innermost thoughts and the struggle some face while growing up in a Hasidic, ultra-Orthadox Jewish community - and all I can say is wow!⁣ ⁣ I received this ARC from @simonschusterca and @netgalley in exchange for my honest review.⁣ ⁣ I find memoirs so interesting, as the author has taken the time to bring us into their world in order to tell their story. And @drsaraglass story is heart-wrenching and eye opening. As somebody who isn’t so familiar with the strict rules and complex conventions of an ultra-Orthodox religion, the reader is immediately brought into this world as we follow along on Dr. Glass’ journey. The rigid guidelines, the instructions from men in power – and those not in power, that dictate how she should live is suffocating. And yet second nature to those all around her.⁣ ⁣ However, Dr. Glass has a secret, and she will do whatever it takes to protect her children and her family from the fact that she is attracted to women. As we learn, she makes one difficult decision after the other, but as a reader all I felt myself doing was cheering her on. Through her loss and her struggles, I read page after page hoping she finds a way to find peace. Through the fear of losing her children, I hoped she would rise about it. Ultimately, I wanted her to be at peace in her heart and mind and find a way to be herself, without any repercussions to her children.⁣ ⁣ How can one find a way to hold her beliefs close, while allowing herself happiness? That is the struggle Dr. Glass faces. And one in which she navigates through marriage and divorce and through death and love with courage and tenacity and grace.⁣ ⁣ I gave this book five-stars. I applaud Dr. Glass for the courage it took to write this, and more so for the bravery she needed to find peace for herself and her children.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #bookreview #booksof2024 #drsaraglass #kissinggirlsonshabbat #memoirs #womenauthors #readmorebooks #reader #bookstagram #bookworm #bookishcanadians #booksofig #bookthoughts #bookaddict #bookrecommendations #simonschusterca #netgalley

#memoirmay “Yes, I could choose my reaction, but I was so tired of being complacent with hurtful behavior.” This memoir was not at all what I was expecting. I knew it was an immigrant story of a family that owned several nail salons, and it is in parts, but it’s also much more. The author Susan Lieu was 11 when her mother died getting a tummy tuck (not a spoiler, it’s talked about in the prologue) and no one in her big Vietnamese family ever wanted to talk about it. As an adult trying to process all the buried feelings, her family is resistant and constantly tells her to just let it go. I listened to the audiobook read by the author. She is a performer so the narration is very good, maybe a bit overly dramatic at times but I enjoyed hearing the emotions of the story. It reminded me a bit of Crying in H Mart, especially the parts about the family gatherings and all of the delicious food. Now I want some pho 😃 I love reading memoirs, and especially immigration stories all year long - are you reading any this month?

According to a report by Epilepsy Action, the public is still “fearful” of epilepsy and seizures. People fear what they don’t understand! People fear the unknown! https://amzn.to/4b4lPH9 (Kindle) https://amzn.to/3QAwOzQ (Audiobook) https://amzn.to/3WNzzlp (Hardcover) In her inspiring, intimate memoir, the first Black woman to ever be appointed to the Supreme Court of the United States chronicles her extraordinary life story. With this unflinching account, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson invites readers into her life and world, tracing her family’s ascent from segregation to her confirmation on America’s highest court within the span of one generation. Named “Ketanji Onyika,” meaning “Lovely One,” based on a suggestion from her aunt, a Peace Corps worker stationed in West Africa, Justice Jackson learned from her educator parents to take pride in her heritage since birth. She describes her resolve as a young girl to honor this legacy and realize her dreams: from hearing stories of her grandparents and parents breaking barriers in the segregated South, to honing her voice in high school as an oratory champion and student body president, to graduating magna cum laude from Harvard, where she performed in musical theater and improv and participated in pivotal student organizations. Here, Justice Jackson pulls back the curtain, marrying the public record of her life with what is less known. She reveals what it takes to advance in the legal profession when most people in power don’t look like you, and to reconcile a demanding career with the joys and sacrifices of marriage and motherhood. Through trials and triumphs, Justice Jackson’s journey will resonate with dreamers everywhere, especially those who nourish outsized ambitions and refuse to be turned aside. This moving, openhearted tale will spread hope for a more just world, for generations to come. So weird to get a ‘spam’ call from Abilene, TX during work yesterday. I happen to be reading the last book in author’s Rex Ogle’s memoir trilogy, Road Home. Mr. Ogle’s Abuela is from Abilene. Maybe she was reminding me to finish the book last night, which I did. The irony of the call was weird, maybe I should have answered it. Either way, read his books! 📚 @thirdrex #RexOgle #AbileneTX #FreeLunch #PunchingBag RoadHome #YALit #Read #Books #SchoolLibrarians #SchoolLibraries #Memoirs

Jeanette shares the dark side of child stardom and how her mom emotionally manipulated her to pursue a dream as a Hollywood actress, a dream that’s not even Jeanette’s in the first place. It’s depressing to read that her mom taught her to “calorie restrict”at the age of 11, resulting in her developing future eating disorders. It’s only after her mom died of cancer that she quits acting, turns to therapy and gradually works her way out. Gosh, the mother-daughter relationship is so unhealthy and in fact I’m also glad her mom died. 🫠 #bookstagram #bookcommunity #bookrecommendations #bookclub #bookquotes #bookworms #bookinstagram #bookreviews #bookreview #reading #booklover #booklovers #bookaddict #reading #readingtime #readinglist #readersofinstagram #readingcommunity #readstagram #instareads #instaread #instareaders #instareading #memoir #memoirs #memoirreadersofinstagram #memoirbooks #memoirbook #memoirbookstagram #memoirbookreview #memoirbookclub

the ancient sea or of a rising and a falling my mother read books and I watched the sea, the sacrosanct sea, but from a balcony sometimes. she read thick books and read The Thorn Birds in four days, which was a miracle to me as I looked on. there was not much but the tropical paradise which was enough. venturing out, i watched the lizards and birds and roamed on my own, a bit further each time than I was allowed. as a child i had almost drowned in the sea, near a mural of a tall ship that looked liked something out of Joseph Conrad. but it never affected me, that near drowning, not for a heartbeat, and I swam alone day and night. she said the men on the balcony across the way were ‘bad men,’ because they waited day and night in shifts watching the ocean for a package to wash up. she said to stay far away from them if any of them arrived down at the sea. they didn’t come down though. just an elderly man, a solitary soul, w/one of those metal detector machines searching always for treasure. he had one of those tans so deep I don’t think it would ever go away. a tan like certain memories in time, or words in old softcover novels. I sat on the old abandoned catamaran beige and sturdy and stationed perfectly between the sea and where the world began for real behind. that is a liminal space. the day would fall as strong as it had been. fall to dusk. the shapes softened. I stared at palm fronds verdant, kind, soothing. the visual sense lessened and the audio essence more in tune or pronounced. and maybe the inner sense. I couldn’t see the water that well either. but I somehow knew the way back. I went inside. mother still reading. a stack of novels by her side, and beyond out the windows, the distant sounds of the tide and its continuous mysteries. it was there long before us and will continue after we die. people don’t necessarily think like that though. and if you looked you could just see a little bit, just discern the whitecaps rising and and then falling, rising and then falling again, each a little life, borne and then deceased, present and then truant, a zenith and then a nadir, a rising and then a falling. ——-

#13 of 2024 🔖🔖🔖🔖🔖 5/5 Bookmarks Why Religion? A Personal Story by Elaine Pagels (211 pages). This was way out of my comfort zone, but I'm so glad I followed through and read it. I've been trying to figure out how to describe this book in my own words. Could not do it. The description on the back of the book is spot on! ❤️📚 "I struggled hard with my own poworthlessness, which spurred an intense interest in magic. I felt I'd give anything to know how to do it, whatever it took - a spell, a cure, a bargain with invisible powers. How could we go on living, having no control over what mattered more than our own lives?" Pg. 79 "We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead think of ourselves as those who are being questioned by life - daily and hourly... Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems, and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." A quote from Viktor Frankl on page 153. Get some tissues ready 🤧 😢 Highly recommend! #nonfiction #nonfictionreads #nonfictionreading #nonfictionreviews #nonfictionreader #nonfictionbookstagram #nonfictionbooks #whyreligion #elainepagels #memoirs #booksmakethebestgifts #bookquotesoftheday #bookrecommendations #bookreading

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thank you @simonbooks for the gifted copy. I’m sure everyone remembers Luke Perry from 90210. Unfortunately, he passed away at the age of 52 from a stroke. This is a memoir/biography. The novel plays out in alternating chapters. One chapter is information on Luke Perry. The next chapter is how the show affected the author. A very unique format, and I don’t think it’s for everyone. Wonderful evening last night at Evelyn & Dan’s Pinot Noir wine tasting! Saw old friends and made new ones! It was so exciting when guests came over to me and asked, “Are you the author?” I must confess to handing out “a few” business cards! #memoir #memoirs #familydysfunction #familytrauma #fatherdaughter #daddyıssues #daddydaughter #badfather

These are some memoirs that I still think about months or even years after I encountered them. I’m drawn to memoirs because they depict the raw and candid moments of vulnerability, pain, and recovery. These are the stories that need to be told, need to be read. If you’re interested in getting into memoirs, here are some recs. 🖋️ Heavy by Kiese Laymon 🖋️I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy I’ve mentioned this one before and it’s gotten a lot of attention, but now without merit. 🖋️In the Dreamhouse by Carmen Maria Machado 🖋️Member of the Family by Dianne Lake 🖋️Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi 🖋️What My Bones Know by Stephanie Foo #memoir #memoirs #persepolis #inthedreamhouse #kieselaymon #the_messy_reader #bookstagram #bookstagrampr #bookstagrammer #newbookstagram #newbookstagrammer #memorablememoírs

#leaypi #freeleaypi #memoirs #Albânia #socialismo #cortinadeferro #historiaeliteratura #escritadesi

IS THIS THE OLDEST BABY YOU WILL EVER SEE? Peter Jackson’s colourful memoir, CONFESSIONS OF A NEWSBOY EDITOR, tells how as Editor of the Sunday Times Magazine he secured exclusive colour pictures of a 500-year-old Eskimo baby, uncovered from the ice of the Arctic wilderness, her body almost perfectly preserved by a natural freeze-drying process. This is just one of the scores of the book’s intimate revelations of dramatic world events and the doings of international personalities — the rich and the famous, the good, the bad and the ugly. Now on sale at Amazon and bookshops #SundayTimes #Editor #newsboyeditor #memoirs #peterjackson #sundaytimesmagazine

BASIC B’S GUIDE ~ Nonfiction Faves 📚 I spotted this book letter trend going around and I love messing around on Canva. I started thinking of some of my favorite books and quickly realized that the ones with the longest staying power are generally #nonfiction . A few memoirs, a couple of graphic novels, lots of grief and strong women! Do we share any favorites? If you would like to hop on this trend and want some tips on how to, then head to @lilacsandliterature and check out her recent reel. I tagged a few friends that I thought might like to try it. Recent memoirs 🎧⭐️💪🏻📖 Listened to these three lately and safe to say I’m 1000% sold on audiobooks-esp non-fiction! These three were all emotional, raw, and inspiring stories. I’d recommend them all (proceed with caution, very heavy/traumatizing topics discussed in all) SOCIOPATH: ‘Patric Gagne offers readers an unflinchingly honest and deeply personal account of her own experiences living with sociopathy.’ FINDING ME: ‘An inspiring memoir that explores her childhood in poverty, her journey to Hollywood, and the importance of embracing one’s true self.’ A STOLEN LIFE: ‘A memoir by Jaycee Lee Dugard, who was kidnapped at age 11 and held captive in a hidden backyard compound in Antioch, California for 18 years.’
