VV Ganeshananthan’s “Brotherless Night” is a spectacular piece of historical fiction. It is mainly set in Jaffna during the long, horrific, years of the Sri Lankan civil war, fought between the Sinhalese-dominated state and Tamil separatist groups. This book tells the story of a family and a society that falls to pieces. At its heart of the book lies the heartbreakingly human Sashi Kulenthiren, an aspiring doctor whose brothers Seelan and Dayalan join the militant Tamil Tigers after their eldest sibling is killed in anti-Tamil riots. The family is splintered as the parents and younger brother oppose their choice. The book is infused with Sashi’s grief, heartbreak and anger and as the war progresses, her friendship and love for K, a high-ranking militant, leads her to become a doctor at a field hospital for the Tigers. However, when the Tigers turn on civilians and members of other rebel factions, Sashi will soon question her own role in the war. Teaming up with a medical school professor and her husband, she will also take on a perilous project of documenting human rights violations committed by the Tigers, the Sri Lankan army and Indian peacekeepers. The incredible novel is an intimate as a memoir, as urgent as a reportage and yet has the majesty and scale of an epic novel. One of the books shortlisted by @womensprize it would be a worthy winner! ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #womensprize #womensprizeforfiction #historicalfiction #memoirwriting #fictionbooks #recommendedreading #bestbooks #whattoreadnext #bookblogging #bookreviewer #bookclubpick #readwithme

Good morning 🌏☀️🌏

I’m working on an essay about my father’s funeral, which features in my book. Here is a little snippet and a picture of me on the morning of the funeral. The funeral of an elder in the Yoruba tradition is not a mournful, modest affair. It is an exuberant celebration of the deceased's life. Gorgeous outfits, sewn from the finest aso oke fabrics, must be tailored for the entire family for the occasion. Coral beads are worn to to ward off evil spirits, and drummers and dancers accompany the hearse to the church. Friends from far and wide come to pay tribute, to reminisce about their departed loved one, and after parties thunder late into the night. When our father cut off contact with his family and friends and our mother left Nigeria, Femi and I found ourselves adrift - biracial children gradually losing connection with the rich fabric of their Yoruba heritage. How do we arrange a traditional Yoruba funeral for a man who had been a recluse for twenty years? Who would we call upon to guide us? We turned to our childhood friends, enlisting the help and counsel of their parents and contacts. For two weeks we planned our father’s funeral, taking care to align with the elaborate rites and rituals befitting a Yoruba elder. We put an advertisement in the Punch newspaper giving details of the funeral, suggesting that people wear royal blue, his favorite color. #memoirwriting #memoir #writingcommunity #writinglife #memoirs #writing #amwriting #bookstagram #writer #writersofinstagram #lifelessons #authorsofinstagram

Watched "Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody" on Netflix and it brought back so many memories. My first CD on a Sony Walkman was the soundtrack to "The Bodyguard." It was the year I, a Taiwanese girl who only knew Mandarin, started learning English, memorizing 50 new words a day. I loved listening to "I Will Always Love You" on my earphones, even though my roommates laughed at my jibberish singing. I didn't know much English then, but I believed the only way to conquer a new language is to keep speaking, not be ashamed of mistakes, and improve through them. More memories to come as I continue writing my memoir. #WhitneyHouston #TheBodyguard #MemoirWriting #LanguageLearning #Memories

Flashback to when I was 25, a little wild and yet so experienced. I had already lived 9 lives. Fresh off the plane from Japan after living for five years there, I returned to the States (NYC) and visited a former BF in MA who wanted to get married. I said no. There was too much life to live before settling down to play house! He sent me these photos a few days ago, 40+ years later 😳 What stories do you want to remember? a long one, but i promise it’s worth it

5/18/2024, 7:10:08 AM

i (accidentally) wrote a book: part two — written august of 2023 “I wrote a book. What would you have me do with it?” This is the question I’ve been asking God for the last seventeen months. Deep down, I think this is what I hoped His answer would be: “Nothing, KT. I just had you write over one hundred pages about your deepest darkest source of shame so it can sit untouched on your laptop for the rest of eternity. You never have to share it with a single soul. It’ll be our little secret.” And I was okay with that. When I first started telling couple of trusted people in my life about the existence of this book, I told them that the reason I knew it came from God was because I wrote it with the intention of sharing it with exactly one person. I did not write it with the hopes of publishing it and becoming a bestselling, world famous author like I’d dreamed of since childhood. I wrote it because I needed to write it. Because I couldn’t not write it. Because the words just came pouring out of me like tears and I had no choice but to let them. Because it was a story I never planned on telling, which tends to be the kind God asks us to tell. 🌻 Update: it’s actually been a little over two years since I finished my book now, which is nuts. The above photo was taken right after I finished that first draft, not long after the sun rose over the bay beside the house where I was staying with my best friend. Even though I genuinely enjoyed the process of writing my story down, it was also the kind of project that took a mental and emotional (and probably spiritual) toll. It was a lot of late nights and, in this case, early mornings. So once it was finished, I closed my laptop, donned my fuzzy socks and chacos, walked to the end of the dock, and lay down on those boards beneath the sun. I think I’ve been in that place for a while. Warm, comfortable, at peace. Those words — that book — still mine and mine alone. But I think it’s finally time to stand back up. #christianwriting #faithwriter #faithwriters #amwriting #amwritingmemoir #memoirwriting #faithandmentalhealth #healingtrauma #healingshame

I’m so Tired of Taking care of My Father I will survive I’m so tired of taking care of my father. I never wanted to be his caretaker after what he put me through my entire existence. My face expresses everything I’m feeling; I just wanted it to end, and I really didn’t care if I sound mean or ugly. I’m just tired of the abuse. Even at this age, I felt it was so abusive for me to have to take care of him after what he put me through. In this photo, taken nearly 25 years ago, I find myself as my father’s primary caretaker. The exhaustion and emotional toll of that responsibility are vividly captured in my expression. Despite my efforts to mask my feelings, my face reveals the deep weariness I felt during that time. Being the only child, it was my responsibility as a caretaker for someone who had caused me so much pain and hardship. It was incredibly challenging, a constant reminder of the abusive past I had endured, making each day a struggle to navigate the complexities of caregiving while dealing with my own emotional turmoil. Living life was enough to navigate most days, let alone the care of a dying parent. Regardless I survived! And in the end, I told him that I would survive Him and be happy and enjoy life. Now that’s what I’m doing. #portraitmemoirs #memoirwriting #memoirs#womenwriters#WomenAuthors #FemaleWriters #WomenEmpowerment#womenwhowrite #AmWritting #writerslife#authorsofinstagram#ReadersOfInstagram #Reading #MentalHealth#writersofig #abuse #caretaker #family #onlychild #exhaustion #unhappiness #needhelp

i accidentally wrote a book: part one — written august of 2023 I’m writing this sentence as I sit in the dark next to a trembling old chihuahua, listening to a background track of thunder rolling and raindrops pelting the windows of the house where I’m staying. The way my chihuahua friend feels about this storm is the same way that I felt about thunderstorms as a child, all the way up through my early adult years. If I’m honest, I still don’t love them. I still find myself cupping my hands over my ears after a particularly bright flash of lightning, waiting for the crack of thunder to follow. I still comfort myself with the imagery of angels bowling strikes in heaven, a light-hearted metaphor my aunt shared with me years ago that has stuck with me to this day. But I am years away from the twelve-year-old girl who curled up on a bench beneath a pavilion at Dorney Park, mashing my hands against the sides of my head and sobbing into my mom’s lap as a storm roared around us. I am the one attempting to comfort the shaking creature next to me the way my parents did with me so many stormy nights. While anxiety is still very much a part of my life – any of my inner circle friends who have spoken to me within the past three weeks can attest to that – it does not hold me in a death grip the way it used to. The difference between who I was then and who I am now is almost miraculous. I am not shaken by storms the way I used to be. I know the One who holds me through them. I can speak truth over my beating heart when the winds begin to rise. So instead of cowering in a corner and waiting for the scary thing to pass, I picked up my laptop and began to do the thing God has been asking me to do for a while — a thing that, if I’m honest, feels much scarier than a summer storm. Even scarier than the other scary things He’s been asking me to do, like going part-time at a job when I was already living paycheck to paycheck so I could pursue the dreams I’ve held close to my chest because that’s where they felt safe. Let me tell you about it. #christianwriter #christianwriters #amwriting #amwritingmemoir #memoirwriting #faithandmentalhealth #anxietyrecovery

🎵☀️ When life sends us little reminders… What would we say to our younger self?…What do we say to ourselves now?… I often jump between myself and my younger self, having conversations with myself inside my head. Conversations about how things have changed, how I changed, stayed the same…perspectives continually altering… to understand, to forget, to forgive, to lose, to love. Life is never static, truly a state of mind… Write it, write your life, however you want to, it aids so much more than what you first might think… On this note, it’s Friday night here and I’m now going to bed…no dancing until the early hours for me this evening, how times change 😁 #writing #writingcommunity #whatsparksamemory #memoir #memoirwriting #writeitalldown #writinglife

From this week’s edition of The Spark, here’s an exercise to let your present day self and your past self duke it out on the page: It’s called “Now and Then.” Time yourself for 20 minutes and write about a moment when your past self was at an impasse and didn’t know what to do. If you can, try to write longhand in a notebook. Your brain slows down. You may notice different memories popping up. When the 20 minutes are up, turn the page. Now time yourself for another 20 minutes and write about how your present day self views that moment from your past. How did your past self resolve the conflict? Would your present day self do something different now? Do you have any regrets? What ifs? Ask yourself: What was your past self thinking? If you enjoyed this exercise, sign up to become a paid subscriber because starting in June our monthly craft lesson will be a paid subscribers-only benefit! #memoir #memoirwriting #writingexercise #writingtips #writingprompt

Happy friday! Day 15 of #springathon and the day’s prompt is ”Spring”. One of the writers I associate very strongly with this season is A. A. Milne (his nonfiction writing and his Winnie the Pooh stories - both of which I adore). But I like and appreciate his son’s memoirs no less and I take any opportunity to bring more attention to them. The Enchanted Places is a reckoning with a childhood spent living in the shadow of a larger-than-life character and a fraught relationship between father and son, while also touching on the many wonders and joys of youth. Path through the Trees on the other hand is his memoir of working life as a bookseller and bookshop owner. 🌸✨💚 #springathonchallenge #springathon24 #springathon2024 #readathon #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #bookrecommendations #aamilne #christophermilne #memoir #memoirwriting #nonfictionbooks #naturewriting

Cat Clients Cat Stories AllMyChildrenSF Morning Update I/We hear all kinds of comments about how cats are so independent and don’t require much attention. That is a bunch of BS! Cats have their own individual personalities and quirks. They depend on us to be fed on their routine schedules; to keep their litter area/s cleared and maintained; they have ways of asking for or demanding emotional attention when they want it; and they need physical and mental stimulation from toys, indoor/outdoor activities, interactive play, snuggles, touch and massage, and more. Granted, some cats are more reserved than others. As with most species, there is a range, all unique and special. 1-3. Hesch of Presidio Heights had big personality, presence, and a strong pull on his owner’s heart strings. Even as she diligently worked from home, he never hesitated to assert and display his love. 💕 4-7. Leo and Milo (The Boys) of Nob Hill are indoor/outdoor cats with their own private patio. Leo is the more outgoing, expressive, and greedy of the two. Milo is more reserved, hibernates a lot, and benefits from separate feeding locations to prevent Leo’s attack. 8. The Lovely Luna, Housemate to Captain Oliver of Lennar at the Shipyard, is a sweet and more reserved indoor cat who is family loyal and adores Oliver. 9. Pulcinella of Polk Gulch is an energetic and active cat who requires plenty of physical and mental stimulation, preventative supervision, occasional hallway exercise, and adaptive to the outdoors. 10. King Jake, Housemate to Madame Maggie of Noe Valley, is an indoor/outdoor cat who maintains his own boundaries and never goes astray. He communicates directly when he wants attention and affection. They all have their unique personalities and qualities with plenty of stories to go with them. ❤️🐾 #catsofsanfrancisco #sanfranciscocats #catclients #roster #memoir #memoirwriting #lifechapters #catstories #elite #petcare #petcareprovider #allmychildrensf

Yesterday I was drowning in depression and it took all day for it to settle to a point where I could recognize where it was coming from. Child parts, deep inside holding our worst trauma, despairing because they blame themselves for our breakup. If they weren't who they were, if they just didn't have this trauma, then our ex would have never left us. If they just weren't themselves, everything would be different. I felt their shame and pain, and sensed that they thought that I hated and blamed them. “Childhood should be carefree, playing in the sun; not living a nightmare in the darkness of the soul.” 📖Memoir ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5 star Rating ❣️My Review ————————— This book broke my heart. I was in tears so many times from being furious and enraged at the child abuse described in this book. It is definitely not for anyone that is triggered by child abuse. Still, it is beautifully written and to the point of the story. An absolute must read! ❣️My Description ———————————— David describes the horrible abuse endured by his mother at the ages between 4-12. He describes what he went through physically and mentally as he was abused and the challenges he faced to survive. #bookstagram #bookaddict #bookphotography #bookcommunity #bookrecommendations #booklove #bookreview #booktok #bookgram #bookquotes #read #readmorebooks #reader #tbr #tbrpost #bookgirl #bookgirlies #memoir #memoirs #memoirwriting #horror #horrorbooks #achildcalledit #davidpelzer #romancebookstagram #darkart #childabuseprevention #childabusesurvivor #childabuseawareness #childabusepreventionmonth

As I embarked on my journey of self-discovery through writing, I stumbled upon the enchanting world of Japanese haiku. Drawn to its simplicity and depth, I found myself captivated by the power of these tiny poems to convey immense meaning. Inspired by the lyrical beauty of haiku, I began to explore my creative potential, experimenting with words and imagery to craft my verses. 📝🌸 While writing my memoir, I discovered a profound love for poetry, finding solace in its rhythmic cadence and evocative imagery. However, when it came time to find quotes for my second book, I struggled to find words that resonated deeply with the message I wished to convey. Then, I turned to haiku, seeking inspiration in its timeless wisdom and poetic simplicity. 📚💭 Though I am very much an amateur in the world of poetry, I have found immense joy and fulfilment in writing haiku. Each verse is a small glimpse into the depths of my soul, a testament to the beauty and complexity of life itself. Through the magic of haiku, I continue to explore the boundless possibilities of creative expression, one syllable at a time. ✨🌊 #WritingJourney #HaikuLove #MemoirWriting #PoeticInspiration #CreativeExpression #HaikuMagic

No Child Left Behind…Memphis 🥰 Dog Roster AllMyChildrenSF Morning Update Even though she was thought of during the compilation process, she was inadvertently omitted in my posting of dog clients. Therefore, Memphis—Golden Retriever Puppy deserves her very own post. She is simply irresistible and sequenced as follows: 1. Her San Francisco arrival photo at 3 months old 2. Toy gifts delivered for Memphis and a meeting with Labrador Retriever Rocky 3. She is Kevin—The HEARTSTEALER’s Bestie and was with him when his Christmas gift (bandana) was delivered on Christmas Eve. 4. Tandem lunchtime outings with Kevin in Potrero Hill 5-7. Play domination before Kevin’s last outing and a welcome back last photo. Memphis is a fabulous dog…Simply Irresistible!! ❤️🐾 🐾The Cats are also well in the AllMyChildrenSF mix and have their place. My decision to become a diplomat became clear on a trip with Hugh “Yusha” Auchincloss, the stepbrother of Jackie Bouvier. Like myself, Yusha attended both Groton and Yale. Groton had instilled in me a wish to serve my country. An alternative to the draft was to join the diplomatic corps, but the golden achievements of ambassadors seemed beyond my abilities. Little did I know, I would have to use diplomatic skills on this very trip. I accidentally lost my passport in Spain, and knew I could get arrested for crossing the border to France. In desperation, we attempted an old trick. Right before the border, I turned around, and then drove the car slowly in reverse toward the Spanish guards. They let us go when Yusha cheerily called out, “Just came across from France and happened to forget something!" But the French arrested me. Yusha was allowed to go. Contacting my parents crossed my mind, but I was determined to handle it myself. Obtaining a new passport would take some persuasion. I had no way of proving that I was Frederick Dalziel Vreeland. Observing the name and age of the American consul, I blurted out. “Haven’t we met before? Perhaps at Harvard?” I feared what he would say. With seeming embarrassment, he replied that he’d attended Brown. Without realizing it, I’d tapped a sensitive nerve. I’d forced this Boston Brahmin to confess that he hadn’t gotten into Harvard. He wanted me out and issued me a passport with no questions asked. The next problem awaited: crossing into France without car papers. Noticing that the police chief was more interested in the attractive French women driving by than inspecting my passport, I told him that my friends had invited me to a bathing resort across the border. I suggested that he come with me. We sped off, being waved through the border with smart salutes. My newfound friend expected me to return to Spain. I had other plans. Yusha and I fed the Comandante, filled him with wine, and then paid a taxi to take him back. He took this new development in stride. We wished each other well. Yusha observed that I would make a good diplomat. As he saw it, part of a diplomat’s job was simply the ability to make connections.

Warm thanks to @edentravels for joining us on a balmy evening this Tuesday to chat about her hauntingly beautiful culinary memoir, Cold Kitchen. We offered tiny shots of the Potemkin cocktail and a chilled Polish Chlodnik with pear, feta & dill and Armenian apricot almond cookies to finish. This book is full of recipes, travels and reflections from her basement Edinburgh kitchen to Central Asia, Turkey, Ukraine, the South Caucasus, Russia, the Baltics and Poland. CONFLICT When I saw this image—on Fortepan, a Hungarian photo archive that’s gotten into seriously hot water for its refusal to support historical revisionism—I knew I had to use it in “Death Trip.” The young woman could easily be my Aunt Csupi, who learned firsthand the dangers of standing near windows during wartime. Which brings me to the current war—or one of them. For months now, everyone booking events for “Death Trip” says some variation of the same thing: “Are you planning on talking about Israel and Palestine? We’re trying to shy away from that. It’s just way, way too toxic.” “Death Trip” isn’t about Israel or Palestine, or their never-ending conflict, but what leads directly to it: Unaddressed trauma, and what it compels people to do. Have you ever felt like you’re acting out someone else’s part? That you’re reading someone else’s lines? Maybe there’s something beyond your perception, and yet so close it’s embedded in your very genes. I can guess some peoples’ reaction right now: “Of course you’d say that. You don’t understand the situation on the ground. You weren’t the one who was attacked.” Fine. I can own that. I’m not Israeli, or Palestinian. I’ll never know what it was like to grow up there, though the number of Israelis I know who live with undiagnosed PTSD is a clue. I’ve said it before but it’s worth repeating: Asking the combatants to address the cycle of trauma that brings them here will not end this conflict. But until they do, this conflict will never end.
