Springathon update! I finished two books this week for #springathon2024: 🌸📚The Sakura Obsession: The Incredible Story of the Plant Hunter Who Saved Japan’s Cherry Blossoms by Naoko Abe (also the #booknaturalists read for May) 🌸📚The Salt Path by Raynor Winn I really enjoyed both books. The Sakura Obsession was as much about Japan’s history (as it relates to cherry trees) as it was nature writing, and it me realize how little I know about that country. Shame on me. The Salt Path gave me a lot to think about, especially around endurance, and the definition of home. Great reading this week! #bookstagram #books #naturewriting #springathon #naokoabe #raynorwinn #fridayreads #reading #booksaboutnature

We are thrilled to connect readers with great books....and from time to time, great PLACES that feed our wonder and a thirst for adventure and exploration. We couldn’t have been happier when a reader told us she was inspired to visit the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute in Far West Texas after seeing Lisa Fargason Gordon’s recommendations in our Nature Book Guide. Books are a terrific way to build community and share our love for ecosystems. CDRI ( @cdri_nature center and www.cdri.org) is located in the foothills of the Davis Mountains at 5100 ft and welcomes visitors. Their work supports scientific research, and their mission is to promote public awareness, appreciation, and concern for nature and the diversity of the Chihuahuan Desert region. There’s a garden, a cactus greenhouse, and satisfying hiking trails with jaw-dropping views. As a member of our Book Recommendation Panel, Lisa’s selections include: Craig Child’s THE SECRET KNOWLEDGE OF WATER in our current Spring 2024 issue. Byrd Baylor’s THE DESERT IS THEIRS in our Spring 2023 issue. Chris Ruggia’s JACK COMICS books are in our Autumn 2023 issue. @chrisruggia lives near CDRI and is a talented artist and storyteller. He works with wildlife experts and scientists to craft his stories of Texas’ Big Bend. Lisa recommended we visit with Gary Paul Nabhan, and we were pleased to include an interview with Nabhan in our Winter 2023-4 issue about THE NATURE OF DESERT NATURE. You can read the entire interview on our blog! For more reading recommendations, visit the link in our bio. 🌟OUT NOW🌟 THE BOOK OF THE FROG by Sally Coulthard is out now. Frogs are remarkable creatures. They have mastered both land and water and can breathe through their skins and their lungs. They have colonised some of the most challenging terrains on the planet, from the Arctic to the South African desert, adopting miraculous breeding strategies in the process. Sally Coulthard’s latest book in her series on under-appreciated creatures explores both familiar native British species of frogs and toads and exotic rarities - many of which are under threat - and offers plenty of helpful advice on how to make your garden more frog-friendly. Packed with extraordinary facts - from frogspawn and froglets to eating habits and hibernation – THE BOOK OF THE FROG is the ideal jumping-off point for anyone with a fascination for amphibians. #bookofthefrog #naturewriting #history #frogs #newbook #literaryagent

When #wheeloftheyear was published, I really wanted to do an event at @shrewbooksfowey . It’s an amazing little shop, in a stunning location, just a stones throw from the estuary of the river Fowey. It’s a town close to my heart - Daphne du Maurier rented a house called Readymoney there during the Second World War, my grandparents (who also loved du Maurier’s books) used to holiday there, and my mum often sailed to there. Then you have Shrew Books to top it off, owned and curated with impeccable taste by Kate, and somewhere we should all set our compasses for when in Cornwall. Last night I got to fulfil that ambition by chatting with Kate and a lovely audience about #thewaythroughthewoods , the pagan world view, how living closely with nature feeds creativity, and a little bit of witchiness thrown in. A perfect day. Oh, and just as welll I took @kabcattie44 with me, as she was able to spot, whilst standing outside Shew Books, that the event was actually down the road at @nsk.fowey 🤭 #priestesspath #paganwitch #witchesofinstagram #witchcraft #wiccan #pagansofinstagram #hedgewitchesofinstagram #hedgewitch #witchyvibes #nature #naturelovers #naturemystic #naturemysticism #natureismytemple #naturalmagic #naturalwitch #realwitchesofinstagram #esoteric #wheeloftheyear #witchstagram #naturenotes #findyourwild #creativeenergy #writersofinstagram #writerslife #naturewritingbywomen #naturewriting #thewaythroughthewoods #rebeccabeattie

We’re pleased to announce Sarah Acton as our next Quay Words writer-in-residence for our summer ‘Vessels’ season . Sarah is a writer and poet passionate about place, nature, and connecting people through collective memory, oral storytelling culture and working landscapes. She writes: “I am excited to spend time at the quayside thinking vessels and look forward to listening to its voices and memories while making new connections, seeing what may be revealed at the residency writing desk after walking practice outdoors. This is a new project with space to dig into new writing and also research historical material alongside exploration into how the physicality of walking may flesh out ideas and lines, and how the memory of this place may walk itself into these.” Find out more about Sarah and her plans for July on the Quayside by visiting the Quay Words website. You will be able to come in and meet Sarah at work at the writer’s desk on Tuesday 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th July, as well as join her on two dusk creative writing ‘walkshops’, now available to book (pay what you can). 📸 photo credit: Robin Mills #Vessels #ExeterQuayside #Exeterwriters #naturewriting #oralstorytelling #SarahActon @exetercustomhouse #writerinresidence #creativewriting #workshops #walkshops @artsandcultureex @thepoetrysociety

Immer liefst Du an meiner Seite.

What relationship do you have to your inner fire or power? Many of us waste our energy because we’ve learnt to feel ashamed about our power and so we turn it in on ourselves, leading to procrastination or inertia. This week on Substack, I share the insights from a powerful sacred fire ceremony that will help if you feel challenged by uncertainty and sense you’re not owning your power. Leseempfehlung! #derduftderdunkelheit #annaboleva @mitteldeutscherverlag #naturewriting #naturewritingbywomen #botanik #naturelovers #spannung #kräutersammlerin

Birdtopia has been released into the wild today! It's ace to see so many people starting to get their hands on it and I'm a bit stunned by how many people have preordered it. I wrote it because I love the birds that I share my home with. I hope the facts make you realise how extraordinary these creatures are, and I hope the folklore teaches of the deep connection we've had with these birds for hundreds of years.  But most of all, I hope it encourages you to go and look for them. We're not talking about birds in some far-off land, on the other side of the world in tropical rainforests or exotic savannahs. These are the ones we can see whenever we step outside our doors. They're right there, for everyone. Get out and enjoy them. 📖🐦 #book #naturewriting #nature #bird #birdbook #springwatch #bbcspringwatch #penguinbooks #penguinrandomhouse #author #britishbirds #outdoors #birds #ornithology #britishwildlife #published #birdsofinstagram #writing

😍 #coupdecoeur #coupdecoeurdevotrelibraire #lesfillesduchasseurdours #annelijordahl #editionsdelobservatoire #litteratureetrangere #naturewriting #litteraturefinlandaise #coupdecoeurlitteraire #librairiescientia #librairiebelge #librairieindependante #book #bookseller #booklover #bookshop #bookaddict #bookstagram #mons #villedemons #monsmaville #monsvilleculturelle #cultureamons #pietonniermontois #monsstagram

The paperback edition of Taking Flight will be published a week today. You can get it in all the usual places. Your local independent bookshop, if you have one, would be a brilliant place to go. The audiobook, recorded by me, will also be released on the 16th. We kept in the bit where I successfully pronounce the word ‘Yinpterochiropterans’, but edited out the bit, three seconds later, where I stumble on the word ‘bats‘. This book came from a simple, almost primitive, fascination with the phenomenon of flight, which seems to me as close to a miracle as makes no difference. It’s all around us, yet we take it almost entirely for granted. I wanted to learn more about it, and share what I learned. It seems to have gone down well with those who’ve read it, and it was shortlisted for the Royal Society Science Book Prize last year, which was an incredible boost. We’d obviously love to get it in front of as many people as possible. The Linktree link in my profile will take you to all the buying options. #sciencebook #naturewriting #nature #birds #insects #bats #pterosaurs #animalflight #wings #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #lovereading #paperbackreader #goodreads

Meet Jack by the Hedge, or Garlic Mustard. A favourite spring-time forager’s delight, enjoyed by many in salads and sandwiches, adding a distinctive mustardy bite. * It got me thinking about ways to avoid blandness in our writing, about how we add bright and sharp notes, a tang that stays with the reader. It doesn’t have to be anything dramatic, after all Jack looks pretty unassuming, but its flavour is unmistakable. It’s part of your unique writer’s voice. * My invitation today is to identify the Jack by the Hedge in your writing. Is it well developed? Could you do more with it? Is there something you might have missed? * As ever, if you give this a go, send me a message to let me know how it went. #nature #writerscompany #writingforwellbeing #writerrevealed #writersofig #creativewriting #landscape #mentalhealth #writinginspiration #strugglingtowrite #writing #writingideas #naturewriting #howtostartwriting #fiction #nonfiction #creativity #inspiration #writingworkshops #wellbeing #landscapewriter

Bothy // Kat Hill (2024) I've been looking forward to reading this book ever since I first saw that cover (I mean, how pretty?) and I'm pleased to say it did not disappoint. I loved it. A lot. At its heart, yes, as the title suggests, this is a book about bothies. Those remote ramshackle huts, free and open to all, offering shelter to anyone who needs it. Hill writes beautifully about her journeys to these tucked away places scattered across the Scottish Highlands. The landscapes and the people she meets are all brought to life wonderfully by some absolutely gorgeous writing. Although she's careful not to overly romanticise these places Hill does explore what makes the off grid world of the bothy, sitting slightly outside everyday life, so special. However, this book is so much more than just a travel journal. Hill uses her journeys to different bothies as jumping off points to explore a smorgasbord of different themes and topics. There is a dazzling array of stuff here from climate change and biodiversity loss; to working class history and land ownership; to tourism and the human impulse to create art. Even the romantic and professional struggles in her own personal life are woven throughout the book. It's hugely impressive the way Hill manages to corral all these ideas into a cohesive and satisfying whole, without the book ever feeling like it is running away off into unmanageable tangents. If you enjoy Robert MacFarlane's writing I think you'd love this (and that is high praise indeed). Bothy is out today. Thanks so much to @wmcollinsbooks for giving me the chance to read this proof copy. #ScottishBooks #ScottishBookstagram #ScottishBookstagrammer #NatureWriting #Bothy #KatHill #Scotland #Nature #NonFiction #IGReads #Reader #BookstagramUK #BookCommunity #Bookish #BookPhotography

Today we wish a happy and EGGcellent publication day to Infinite Life and Jules Howard (@juleshoward_zoology) Every animal on the planet owes its existence to one crucial piece of evolutionary engineering: the egg 🥚 Every egg there has ever been is an emblem of survival. Yet the evolution of the animal egg is the dramatic subplot missing in many accounts of how life on Earth came to be. But without this universal phenomenon, animals as we know them (including us!), could not have evolved and flourished. Join Jules on a CRACKing journey from the coastlines of the Cambrian Period and Carboniferous coal forests, where insects were stirring, to the dramatic end of the age of the dinosaurs when live-birthing mammals began their rise to prominence. Have you got yourself a copy yet? 🥚 #ElliottandThompson #InfiniteLife #ScienceWriting #NatureWriting

"...in this moment, is it still possible to face the gathering darkness and say to the physical Earth, and to all its creatures, including ourselves, fiercely and without embarrassment, I love you, and to embrace fearlessly the burning world?" ~ Barry Lopez • Embrace Fearlessly The Burning World 🌿 Hi Friends! 🔥 Happy Wednesday! 🌿 Time for a Book Review! I just finished this incredible book of essays by Barry Lopez; Embrace Fearlessly The Burning World, (Introduction by Rebecca Solnit! ❤️). Published in May of 2022, it is a posthumous gathering of a selection of work, both previously published and new, which is classified as Nature Writing. I'm not overly familiar with this genre of writing, but come to it through other beloved authors such as Annie Dillard, Katherine May and Terry Tempest Williams. I find myself altogether blown away by the depth and calibre of Lopez's writing and use of language—transformational and incandescent—it is as alive as the vivid and varied naturescapes he describes. There's a quality of profundity in the meeting of human and nature and it's apparent that Lopez was eminently attuned to this. This is a beautiful, heart-expanding book and I cannot wait to read more of Lopez's writing. How is your week going? It’s Day 6 of #springathon and today’s photo prompt is ”Autumn”. For me, autumn means two things: mushrooms, and hues of orange. And what woodland animal better represent orange than the fox? The book that made me fall in love with nature writing is Foxes Unearthed by @lucyfjones (whose second book I’m reading now). I’ve also really enjoyed Adele Brand’s The Hidden World of the Fox. Next up in my fox-related reading is ’Fox and me’ that I saw described as ’if Thoreau wrote The Little Prince’ so how could I possibly resist? #springathonchallenge #springathon24 #springathon2024 #readathon #booktube #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #naturewriting #naturalhistory #booksonanimals #animalnonfiction #nonfictionbooks #bookrecommendations

I read lots of books, stacks of them are all over the house. I pulled one from a pile in the study—Katie Holten’s The Language of Trees: A Rewilding of Literature and Landscape. It will be on the coffee table for awhile, so I can pick it up from time to time and absorb its wisdom. The Language of Trees: A Rewilding of Literature and Landscape, Katie Holten, Tin House Books, 2023, 320 pages. The Language of Trees is a collection of original writing from more than fifty contributors, including some of our favorite writers: Camille T. Dungy, Ross Gay, Susan Simard, Ada Limon, Aimee Nezhukumatathil, Richard Powers, and Robin Wall Kimmerer. A hike to a nearby nature center this weekend inspired this move. The leaves on the trees were just starting to unfurl, not nearly yet at full size. When I looked up, blue sky was still visible, the canopy was not yet complete. I was reminded of my favorite apple tree—my favorite reading tree—in the backyard of the last place we lived before moving to our current home. Good reading took place up there. And I miss it. And then, a friend sent me a clip from the @startribune about the Midway-Frogtown Arborators Band, a brass band of arborists, nursery growers, park employees, local tree enthusiasts and urban forestry advocates who happen to haul their instruments up trees before they play. We featured The Language of Trees in our Winter 2023-2024 issue, which is always available for download via the link in our bio. #naturebookguide @katieholten #naturewriting #trees #poetry #essay #bookstagram #igbooks #booksbooksbooks #bookrecommendation @tin_house

Yesterday I saw, and then heard, swifts for the first time this year. Visiting the UK each summer, they fly 3,400 miles from Africa. Wheeling, swooping, darting, they do almost everything on the wing and I find their speed of movement - and distinctive screeching call - beyond words. The poem is, ironically, an attempt to express that sentiment through words. More importantly, swifts are under serious threat - they nest in tiny gaps in old buildings. But as these are renovated, the gaps are closed up and so swifts lose their nesting sites (which they return to year after year). Using a swift brick  in all new builds is a simple way to counteract their drop in numbers (down 60% between 1995 and 2020) but as it stands the government are refusing to make this simple and effective measure compulsory. @writerhannahbt is doing some amazing campaigning to overturn this, but you can also write to Rishi Sunak - who apparently dislikes the idea of swift bricks (of course he does) - to ask him to overturn the decision. #savetheswifts #nedvesseywriting #naturewriting #thefeatherspeech

#naturewriting #destindefemme #amour

This time of year, as everything is coming into bloom, I love reading books about nature. This is a relatively new love for me. Nonfiction in general is something I only gravitated to here and there throughout my reading life. And while I can’t say that I read a lot of nonfiction, that particular part of my shelves has started to grow in the past years. These are all books that I have either read or hope to be getting to soon based on recommendations from other readers whom I know I have very similar reading tastes with #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #booksbooksbooks #bookrecommendations #booklover #naturewriting #tbr #bookstoaddtoyourtbr

Reading is a big part of our lives and our homeschool...and that's true of me as well as the kids! I just finished reading The Keeper of the Bees by Gene Stratton-Porter and it was wonderful! There were so many rich descriptions of nature - and of bees and their habits of course! I checked with a bee-keeping friend and apparently most of what the book says about bees is true! I definitely have a new respect for these amazing little creatures! #motherculture #books #naturewriting #bookstagram #bees

#Leseschatz #Reise #Mond #NatureWriting #Naturlyrik #ReisezumMond #DunkleSeitedesMondes #RobertSteinmüller #DieMeeredesMondes #Fauna #Flora #Bookstagram

My invitation today – draw a rectangle on the bottom third of a piece of paper (representing the ploughed field). This is your foundation. Above that a middle third, (the pasture), and a final rectangle (the sky). Then add in smaller, vertical rectangles that are your focal points (the trees; I suggest 2 or 3). * You now have a template to fill with words, ideas, phrases – roughly foundation, middle ground and a top layer/backdrop. The three focal points can be what draw the three layers together, or add in new elements. My suggestion is to work in free association as you fill the rectangles, not thinking too deeply about what you're writing. As if you were sketching. * Once you have finished, highlight any words, phrases and ideas that interest you or that you feel have potential. You can use this as a starting point for a piece of writing or to filter out layers in something you are working on. You can also go out into the landscape and find your own layers.
