When #wheeloftheyear was published, I really wanted to do an event at @shrewbooksfowey . It’s an amazing little shop, in a stunning location, just a stones throw from the estuary of the river Fowey. It’s a town close to my heart - Daphne du Maurier rented a house called Readymoney there during the Second World War, my grandparents (who also loved du Maurier’s books) used to holiday there, and my mum often sailed to there. Then you have Shrew Books to top it off, owned and curated with impeccable taste by Kate, and somewhere we should all set our compasses for when in Cornwall. Last night I got to fulfil that ambition by chatting with Kate and a lovely audience about #thewaythroughthewoods , the pagan world view, how living closely with nature feeds creativity, and a little bit of witchiness thrown in. ~ Celebrating Bealtaine With Children ~ I usually never share pics of my children on this account because I value their privacy and safety, but as my daughters face is covered while she thinks of a wish to say over the 'good fire' I will make an exception. Sharing my Folk Ways and Folk Witchcraft with my children is a big part of my life, practice and therefore my children's upbringing. Just as I suppose it was to the previous generations who passed their folk ways down to me while I was growing up. With each new generation, new traditions seem to come about- largely from the pairing of new couples/parents and what they choose to pass down to their children- little pieces from each side of the family. Jumping over the good fire is one such new tradition for me. Growing up, we never did it. But my husband has brought it into the family, and each year we now either jump the fire or release paper wishes into the flames. Yesterday, my children and I had a great time going through our copy of 'circle round: raising children in Goddess traditions' by @starhawk_spiral et el and then doing activities from our copes or the Earth Child Handbooks. My children are not expected to be Pagan. As they grow up, they are free to explore and forge their own spiritual paths in life- already our eldest daughter is branching out of Paganism and is exploring #buddhism But while they are young, it is so fun to let them share the faith and practices of their mummy and daddy in safe and accessible ways. This week, the children and I will be off to the woods to collect branches and twigs to take home and decorate with ribbons for mini maypole branches. I can't wait! ~ Fearie Offerings On Bealtaine ~ Happy Bealtaine! It's that time of year at last! The sun is gaining strength and glowing more and more each day, the apple is in blossom and the roses are budding. The fertile land is waking up, and so are the many other areas of fertility and creativity 😉 This evening, my youngest daughter and I have completed our annual tradition of leaving a hand collected selection of flowers on the doorstep for the local land spirits and fae. All of the flowers were collected from our own garden. This was a piece of Folklore and Folk Ways passed down to me by my mother, who taught me that to leave 'themselves' (the fae) a gift of flowers on the doorstep would bring about their blessings upon the home and garden. The flowers had to be ideally collected from ones own garden, and if not your own garden, then collected on your way home from your last journey on Bealtaine/May Day (growing up, this was usually on our way home from school). The flowers are then laid on the doorstep at dusk and the door locked for the night- no going out after the locking of the door in case you disturb themselves on their visits and revelry and invoke their curses. However, if your door was kept shut, and the flowers left out, it was believed that the local fae would bless your home and garden. Especially the garden, where it was believed your crops or flowers would grow abundantly once blessed. I've come accross several versions of this lore. Some English, some Irish, and some of Irish descent from the vast diaspora that has spread accross the globe. What are your Bealtaine/May Day traditions? So… the fabulous thing about having a new book out is that I get to do a little road trip round all of my favourite indie bookshops signing any copies I find… last week it was @treadwellsbooks, last Saturday it was @thehollowhillsbookshop in Glastonbury, on Monday it was @bookstoptavistock, next up will be @ivybridgebookshop on Thursday 25th, @eastgatebookshop on 2nd May, @shrewbooksfowey on 9th May, and @spencer_thorn on 8th May. I absolutely adore indie bookshops - they are without fail always supportive and passionate about what they do. As some of you may know, I had a swimming hiatus over the winter after an 8 day stay in hospital on very strong anti-biotics. 3am Witching hour thoughts...quality over quantity...but, the thoughts carry on even if it's sporadic thoughts that may not make sense....being a male witch is what I prefer...regardless if the majority of witches are predominantly female...keeping vampire hours...using Instagram like a journal...criticise if you want.. I try to keep things positive rather than negative... This is my own journey as a real male witch... but how did this all occur... True peace water is a beautiful magickal aid and just the aesthetics are enough to evoke feelings of serenity. The theory behind peace water is the old adage "to pour oil over troubled waters" meaning to soothe the spirit. Scientifically, when oil is poured onto agitated water, it does smooth the surface, and that is what this "water" does for your household as well. I write as much as I can with whatever comes from my mind..yes, I have another journal that I don't share with many on Instagram...(maybe one person or two)... keeping vampire hours..sporadic thoughts , ideas, or observations that carry on.. from a male witch point of view.. I see things on Instagram...in case anyone wants to know... Let me fill in the blanks... I don't like saying my age... but if you do the math, I was born in 1954...I lived thru history, I said that before...I lived in California, Indiana, Arizona, Mexico and currently in England...still, witchcraft found me... I'm a strict vegetarian and a witch. How I got involved with witchcraft after really thinking about my entire life was pure curiosity..... I was doing things considered witchcraft without knowing that it was witchcraft... I never fitted in with my own biological family... I did what I wanted to a certain extent... being a witch wasn't in my mind, (but, it was discovered in a possible ancestor on my mother's side).....someone said if I am studying witchcraft, then I am a witch... then life changed....familiarity happened.. Can one look at the universe differently... and find that being a witch was always destined to happen?? 3am Witching hour thoughts... another month..and this post still has a life of its own... but still not many people will actually see this post.....only a few... but it is Morticia Addams Mondays... I don't sell anything, nor do I write books... that must be a disappointment to someone who reads this...as I am just one person doing this post. Technically, there is someone else. A friend, @monserratt266, who I have mentioned before. I trust her for various reasons. And for that to happen...it's called intuition... a trust...almost as if I have known her for longer than 3 years....(There are many reasons why she is a collaborator on this post... but that's something I will not share for privacy reasons).... and if anyone sees this, follow her, too... I may have some friends... but only a few I feel comfortable texting... I find the journey as a witch brings so many people who are mentors to me. I never really questioned. Somewhere, the full moon happened, somewhere the full moon was viewed, somewhere the full moon wasn't obscured by clouds, but that's okay if I didn't exactly get a chance to see it...the weather around Brighton has been rather cloudy... I went out twice in search of a full moon... instead, I found clouds, flowers, and a black cat...at least, I know the moon will never leave... I am just posting this for myself...the photos were taken on March 25th and after midnight on March 26th in a cemetery that I sometimes go to just escape for a bit of time...but, from the cemetery is a good place to just check out the sky during the times of the full moon...except when the weather doesn't cooperate... At least, I tried....but, the photos are real..nothing from Pinterest...the cat decided to just show up while I was out...the cat recognised me....so, that was rather nice...considering I post 3am Witching hour thoughts usually using black cat photos... Maybe next month..the moon like that of a crow or bats and myself are always around and have never gone away....is this witchy enough...I'm a real witch, so it's witchy enough for me... 3am Witching hour thoughts... This post seems to have a life of its own... I just supply the words.....sporadic thoughts that just help me understand the way life is as a real male witch... having vampire hours.. even if I have been shadow banned and losing followers... I do these posts for myself...... because, as I said before, I use Instagram like a journal... I have many other witches as teachers, mentors, and just those who are an inspiration...(mostly female since female witches have more knowledge...)....write what you see and hear... like a tarot card reading..past, present and future...witch therapy... 3am Witching hour thoughts... The Spring Equinox is already done, but that just means the seasons change...the next full moon will be on March 24th, 2024...eventually, the weather will get better...the sporadic thoughts still go on..keeping vampire hours... I never gave it a thought about which kind of calendar to follow...when I started out on this strange journey...I started learning everything about Yule, Imbolc, Ostara, Beltane, Litha, Lughnasah, Mabon, and Samhain...and finding familiarity with all the Sabbats...I may be following a 12 month calendar...but, there are moments, I find it's easier to follow the Wheel of the Year....is that strange....is it just me🤔...or am I the only one...😟 I seem to be sad when I miss the full moon... and happy when I finally see the full moon....so many things have changed...I find I have strange dreams... and pay more attention to what I dream about....dreams seem to take on a different meaning these days...from the Wheel of the Year...relearning life even at my age...there's nothing wrong with that as if being a witch was meant to happen...it's totally strange...is this normal🤔...am I the only one...I probably am...but, this is my own journey as a real male witch...something that no one understands... ~ Deleting Old Grimoires? ~ When I was growing up around folk ways and what many will now identify as Folk Witchcraft, I was taught very specific methods by my mother around keeping grimoires/magical notebooks. You had one main book (A Book Of Ways And Means) and then one private notebook. In that notebook, you would fill it with write ups of any Tarot or Oracle readings you had done for yourself, insights on books read, new learnings, spells/workings you had designed and were trialing, supernatural experiences, significant dates and what had occurred (including sometimes a birth chart or numerology calculation if it was relating to a birth or major event), and so on. Then, when the notebook was full, you would go back through potentially years of notes and weed out everything that worked ritually/magically, and any important information that needed to be kept, and transfered it over to the primary book of ways and means. Once this was done, the notebook was burnt ritually as a way of letting go of the past and any irrelevant information, and a new notebook would be started. I get the principle, and it is an interesting one. But I always struggle to part with the old notebooks lol. It's getting to that time again now, my current notebook has two pages left, and I'm left with the big decision of stick to family tradition (not ancient, but still tradition), or break with that and keep the notebook for nostalgic reasons. I started this particular notebook in 2016, and details protection workings I did when fleeing Domestic violence, house cleansing rituals for when I moved home, healing charms for when my newborn was sick, to notes I took when attending virtual moots and Zoom talks on Witchcraft. I haven't made up my mind yet, but it got me thinking. Do you have very specific traditions or rituals in place for magical notebooks, grimoires, book of shadows etc? If so, how do they work?
