I can't explain in words how much the fox fascinates me and why, so I'll show it. I found this skull years ago, it is damaged but perfect. Last year I was lucky enough to get my hands on a fox cadaver. It was also very damaged, most of the animal was already gone, given to nature and its inhabitants, but I was able to obtain a fair amount of leg and paw bones. I removed the rotting flesh. I smelled Death. It is a smell that no one forgets after inhaling it once. St. John’s Wort🌿 I shared a bit of lore and magic last year when working with this plant ally. I was unable to find much of it anywhere, but this year it has been truly abundant right in my back yard! Something woke up inside me that has manifested itself in creative writing during this spring season. Writing has always been a sacred ritual for me. A way to alchemize emotions into something beautiful and moving. Words hold power, and I had an amazing tarot reading that only validated how this practice empowers me. As a folk practitioner, I often refer to the astrological signs and the moon. My Appalachian ancestors believed in tuning into these rhythms to plan their gardening and farming. The success of their seeds and result of astrological timing. I adopt this approach into my magical practice for certain workings — to plant seeds, to water them, to harvest them and bear the fruits of my labor. By combining the power of written and spoken words during a Dark Moon under the stability of an earth sign, they take root deep in the soil for future manifestations. We all talk about slow living. In addition to this we should also talk about slow witchcraft. Being a witch (or occult practitioner of any kind) isn't about constantly performing great rituals. It's an attitude to life starting with the small things. Go for a walk in the forest. Experience the change of seasons. Light a candle for your familiar. Create an incense blend - Burn this incense blend. Plant that seed. Harvest these herbs. Prepare your own tea. Create all these small moments through out the day to strengthen the connection to the Craft. We are living in a busy world with busy days and weeks full of busy jobs. Everything is happening too fast anyway. Slow it down. Your Craft isn't meant to add even more preasure and stress to yourself. It's not about achievement but about constant connection through little acts of devotion and growth over time at your own pace. I literally get an allergic reaction when I see people judging other practitioners based on the pace of their practice - especially in social media context. And there's another point: Many people seem to forget that social media only ever offers a glimpse into someone's life. For many reasons, I personally do not share every single ritual act here and never will and I'm pretty sure that most practitioners are like me. The Devil takes care of the fern. In Germany it's said when the Devil brings you the magical fern seed between 11 and 12 o'clock at Christmas eve it will grand you the power of 30. We see similar narratives in northern Europe quit often which is kinda interesting because the fern actually has no seeds but spores. ~ Celebrating Bealtaine With Children ~ I usually never share pics of my children on this account because I value their privacy and safety, but as my daughters face is covered while she thinks of a wish to say over the 'good fire' I will make an exception. Sharing my Folk Ways and Folk Witchcraft with my children is a big part of my life, practice and therefore my children's upbringing. Just as I suppose it was to the previous generations who passed their folk ways down to me while I was growing up. With each new generation, new traditions seem to come about- largely from the pairing of new couples/parents and what they choose to pass down to their children- little pieces from each side of the family. Jumping over the good fire is one such new tradition for me. Growing up, we never did it. But my husband has brought it into the family, and each year we now either jump the fire or release paper wishes into the flames. Yesterday, my children and I had a great time going through our copy of 'circle round: raising children in Goddess traditions' by @starhawk_spiral et el and then doing activities from our copes or the Earth Child Handbooks. My children are not expected to be Pagan. As they grow up, they are free to explore and forge their own spiritual paths in life- already our eldest daughter is branching out of Paganism and is exploring #buddhism But while they are young, it is so fun to let them share the faith and practices of their mummy and daddy in safe and accessible ways. This week, the children and I will be off to the woods to collect branches and twigs to take home and decorate with ribbons for mini maypole branches. I can't wait! It’s true! I am that very witch! I don’t like winter. It gets easier each and every year though. I take this time to connect with my Ancestors, and to connect with the Land and its inhospitable aspects that still have so much to give if we can just reach out. My Ancestors spent a good chunk of the year in the woods, chopping wood, trading fur, and living off the land. Through my work with the Winter Mother, each Winter becomes a time of deep contemplation and research, as well as a time to experiment with fermentation, preservation, and of course, sorcery. I also learn about various crafts that kept my Ancestors prosperous, and those which marked my region. I call on the Winter Mother in the dark half of the year for protection against the cold, against illness, and especially against strife. For service workers like myself, now as much as back when I was a server, Winter means less cashflow as soon as the New Year comes to pass. It's only in the last few years that food scarcity has stopped being a problem for me; I grew up a child of bankruptcy, and I went off on my own when I was way too young to understand the complexities of running a budget. On top of that, even though I'm usually blessed with an immune system made of pure steel, stress does me in faster than I have time to react. My goal in formulating this Oil of the Winter Mother was to bring abundance in times of difficulty, protection against the dangers of cold, and against the loss of time. To protect especially against illness and its potential effect on finances. To celebrate reunions, feasts, and packing on a little fat for the months to come. To honour the domestic arts and the lives of our Ancestors who worked until they were crooked and knotty so that we may come into this world with abundance and prosperity. Yesterday was the night of the Full Moon, so I took the opportunity of building my altar to the Winter Mother. A figure made of snow-dried twigs and branches, adorned with Rowan and Hawthorn. A Crow’s beak to grant her speech. Pine, Rowan, and Usnea to make her at home. Rosehip and roasted flour to feed her, and water to sate her thirst. A Winter Mother’s Taper to bring her warmth, and an offering of incense to draw her spirits. A Goose feather to grant her access to our dreams. Instructions to build an altar to the Winter Mother and call upon her for acts of sorcery are available with our Cut-Wife’s Bundle, which contains everything necessary to start your work with the Winter Mother in her aspect of the Cut-Wife. Choosing which herbal allies we want to call on in our work is the hardest part of formulating a new recipe. Different herbs act in different ways, and learning about each plant ally individually is what allows us to combine them effectively. Within this oil, we use Frankincense to elevate the user to a godly status, and to bring wealth by its high value in antiquity. It also fixes Solar pneuma into the oil. Lemon Balm is used as the primary herb of Jupiter, and serves to fix the pneuma of Jupiter during our invocations. Laurel is used to symbolize the crown of Laurel that was given to the Olympians and to heroes of antiquity. Vetiver is here to grant victory over adversity by virtue of its resilience, as well as to ground our success in reality by virtue of its deeply earthly elemental associations. Another classical example would be blockbuster herbs versus road-opener herbs; the difference lies in their potency and the violence in which they clear obstacles. Broom is much more intense than Lemongrass by virtue of its exploding seed pods which shoot its seeds out like bullets, as well as its very drying energetics. I use it in blockbuster spells where I don't mind a little fire and brimstone. I would go to Lemongrass for a gentler effect when I want to create positive opportunities without disturbing my peace too much. Correspondence tables, humoural theory, and modern energetics can be great tools to help guide us in the right direction, but the best way to learn about a plant’s use in magic is to directly connect with it. Meditation, contemplation, observation, and relationship are the best teachers. Crown of Success Oil will be restocked in mid December. I’ve been using this way of fixing florida water for over a year. I originally developed it to feed a St Lazarus charm purchased from a vodouissant in Montréal. This water can be used like regular Florida water, to cleanse and clean, but it can also be used in uncrossing rituals and to open roads. For these latter uses I like to draw crosses on the back of my neck, or to sprinkle crosses of the water at each fork of a crossroads while praying to Saint Lazarus to open my roads towards a specific goal. You can also put it in a dish and set it on fire — with safety in mind, of course! This specific bottle was prepared on the feast of St Lazarus, but it can be done at any time. It was made in preparation for our community uncrossing ritual coming up in January. This ritual is available only to Patreon members of the Haw-Thorn tier, who benefit from a monthly community ritual performed on their behalf. Write out and pray Psalm 94. Anoint it with Mercury’s Open Roads oil, and put it in your bottle of Florida water. Add lemongrass and frankincense tears, as well as a few drops of holy water — I am using St Petka holy water here, but anything works. Add also a few drops of open roads oil. This done, shake vigorously and pray an Our Father, three Hail Marys, and Psalm 23 over the bottle. Let it sit for at least three days before using. Sprinkle in a space to cleanse it, or use it to wash candles, tools, and other items in need of cleansing. Wash your hands with it before and after malefic work. Anoint the neck along with Décroisé uncrossing oil for uncrossing purposes. Sprinkle at crossroads as offerings to the spirits. Working by the Moon is an age-old practice that involves observing the Moon in its various phases and signs to know when to plant seeds, harvest plant material, and till the soil. Plants like Henbane, Belladonna, and Mandrake, that require cold stratification, typically benefit from being planted on the Winter Solstice and left outside through winter and spring. In my experience, this does not have to follow the precise date of the solstice, and can be done at any point between Yule and Epiphany. We were blessed with a full Moon in Cancer on the 26th, which made it an especially auspicious time to plant. As the Moon’s domicile, Cancer brings the strongest blessings of fertility and abundance. I employed my Henbane Alraune to bless these Henbane seeds so that they may grow strong in the Spring. Seven pots in total, for the Seven Sisters which they serve to draw down. Three seedling from each will be given a home, making 21 in total. Some will be for root, some will be for seed. I plan to keep a major portion of this harvest and to make Henbane root fetishes available in the Fall. Are you planting anything this Yuletide? This time between Yule and Epiphany are always some of the hardest for me, both emotionally and magically. This is the depth of the Winter, when the Sun rises for a mere third of the day, and is most often obscured by clouds, rain, and snow. Magically, this is a time when the Dead return, when the Wild Hunt rides and sows discord and danger, and when vampiric shades haunt the night. It’s a particularly busy time dealing with evil spirits that wish to sneak into the home, and the general stress of the populace which creates miasma and small curses everywhere. Client work is always a bit more intense this time of year as well. But there is beauty in it, as in all things — I’ve been planting seeds for my family’s garden, including Henbane and Borage. I’ve been working spells of protection and success to usher in the new year. The Winter Mother has been keeping the house warm and protected, despite the shades and spirits lingering outside the windows when night comes. I try to perform a Crown of Success working each and every month. This is a practice I would recommend to everyone. I find it important to include a component of road-opening to Crown of Success workings so that our change of stations and our success can manifest in actionable opportunity. Here I’m using our Mercury’s Open Roads dressing dust, elected under Mercury in Gemini, along with Pognon Money-Drawing oil and our soon restocked triple-infused Crown of Success oil. You can burn this spell on top of a picture of yourself, on top of your name, or on top of a business card, which is the method I like to use. Herbal allies I love for this kind of work include Lemon Balm, Frankincense, Laurel, Pine, and High John the Conqueror root. I usually recommend working this kind of spell on a Sunday in the hour of the Sun, accompanied with the 3rd Pentacle of the same, or when the Moon is in her Mansion of Al-Dhira which brings wealth and stature. Ooooh my clients are not the ones to f with!! Always love performing skull domination workings using Bow Down oil. These skulls are worked for dominating an enemy or a rival, especially in cases of abuse or of legal procedures. The head is carved from clay or wax, and filled with the target’s information along with cotton and herbs for domination and confusion. This is soaked with Bow Down and closed up before the working is done. I always give my querents the option of having this loaded skull sent to them so they can perform their own magic on it when needed, or to keep the skull on retainer so I can perform more work on their behalf in the future. Following yesterday’s reel and the hot conversation it created, I’ve had a few folks ask about protection during baneful workings. It’s good practice to use a protection oil on ourselves before practicing any baneful magic or any magic involving spirits we do not hold relationship with. This can be something like our Protection Warding oil (which I am crafting in this video) or our Brimo’s Keep oil, or it can be something like @chaoticwitchaunt ‘s Panacea oil. I would also recommend protective talismans such as pendants made of iron nails, or the 5th Pentacle of Mars. Charms made of protective herbs like Rue, Hawthorn, and Rosemary can also be carried during the ritual. In extreme cases, a box containing your hair and fingernail clippings in sea salt can be placed nearby with a black candle burning on top to absorb any negativity that would come your way. Fixed Star Vega materia or talismans (launching Saturday) can be used during the ritual to compel the spirits to listen to us and to protect us against their negative energies, or against any parasitic spirits attracted by our work. We can also chew Liquorice or Galangal root. Following the working, the space should be deeply cleansed both physically and spiritually using cleansing washes, Chase Away Evil oil, and by burning herbs such as Yerba Santa, Sagewort, or Garlic. Another layer of protection oil, and a quick anointing of our protective talismans and doorways should follow this cleansing to make sure that we are cleansed, protected, and blessed going forward.
