May 7, 2024 Emergency surgery for Mandragora officinarum! 🚨🚨🚨 As summer is fast approaching and temps are rising up, my mandrakes are going back to sleep, one by one. We have also been having a pretty wet spring, so root rot is certainly an issue on my mind. I usually unpot dormant mandrakes to check on their health and growth progress. Checking their crowns for signs of rot is my first step to determine which root needs to get a thorough check immediately. As I was going through my newly dormant mandrakes, I noticed one of the officinarum roots had some soft tissue and rotting skin, which was a clear signal for me to unpot it for a thorough check. Lo and behold, there were some minor roots at the crown. But more alarming was one of the smaller roots was actually rotting and broke off from the main body as I unpotted it (Photo 2). There were also sections that felt a bit soft when squeezed (sign of beginning of root rot). I have also noticed some white wort-looking nubs on those soft sections. I ended up having to cut off the rotting parts. I then covered the root in cinnamon powder. Because of its anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties, I have had good success in saving my mandrakes from minor rot using cinnamon powder. I'm going to let the root air out a day or two before deciding whether to replant it or to dry and preserve it. This root is only a little over 2 years old, and it's been growing quite nicely, so I don't feel quite ready to harvest it yet. I’ve been daydreaming about a poison plant periodical for a long time, wishing someone would start a place where we could share experiences that spring forth from these powerful plants. Personal journeys are incredible, but there is magic that happens when we allow these plants to build community through different voices. Collaborating is where myths are born, where we can overlap our stories to deepen our own relationships with the plants and each other. Wishing has turned into action now, and I’m taking steps to facilitate this project. I’ve tentatively named it The Poison Garden and it will consist mostly of individual issues as devotionals to specific plants, with occasional issues of general themes found within this work. Art, essays, photos of gardens, safety information and disclaimers, how-tos, personal experiences, dream documentation, historical records - anything that can be put into print format about these plants is welcome. I have no expectations for the content because I want it to be whatever you bring to the table. Because these periodicals are entirely about communal world-building through poison plants, the logistical model will be as well. All profits (after print costs) will be equally divided and given to the contributors. I will also be asking for people to co-edit issues with me, so I am not the only one making content decisions. And once we have a few issues made, I will be doing grant writing in hopes of offering additional stipends to artists and writers for their work. This is a really important project to me. These plants were once held as sacred by humans and immortalized in art and story, but now the only attention they get is negative or fearful. I want to help improve their reputation and strengthen the community of people who appreciate the depth that poison plants offer. And I need your help to do it. I’ll be posting again soon with a site and details of how you can contribute, but for now, please share feedback and spread the word - especially to people opting out of social media. English Bluebells are protected under law and as a result it is illegal to intentionally pick, uproot or destroy them. • happened upon this stunning red trumpet while on a walk, Brugmansia Sanguínea, native to the Andes mountains in the North Eastern South Americas. All parts contain tropane alkaloids as you would expect from Brugmansia, and native South Americans have used this plant as an entheogen for centuries. This Angel’s flowers are not as large as the white variety, around 7-10cm diameter at the petals and didn’t seem to have a strong perfume, although that could be because it was daytime. Last year was pretty poor for my daturas so when I planted dozens of seeds this winter and only a single one sprouted, I thought this might be the first year in a long time that I would have no plants. I had jars of seeds from Mescalero that were a bit old, and jars of various seed varieties from my own plants, plus a few seed packets from Eimi and I tossed a bunch in a plastic strawberry tray and didn’t feel hopeful. But lo, datura seedlings have sprouted, 125 by my count and I have no idea what varieties I’ve got here. I made the girls a nursery out of an old display box I made and I’ll know in a week or so which varieties I’ve got. So far I think I’ve got inoxia and wrightii but I’m really hoping for a few metels. The Moon card here is especially significant because it was the final piece of the puzzle. It was a message from my Ancestors, a confirmation - THIS is the name. “From The Depths” is all about balancing the light and dark within ourselves. Henbane flowers are so fascinating, with that mix of deep purple and soft yellow. And they actually make decent dried flowers, retaining their soft yellow color and purple accents. Black henbane (Hyoscyamus niger) is one of the most famous poison plants in European witchcraft, particularly as an flying ointment ingredient. Black henbane was used as a flavouring in beer historically, but it was eventually replaced by hops during the late Middle Ages. While I was in Austin TX I visited a Hierberia that had been open since the 1980s and was excited to find Toloache (datura) leaf powder and Habas de San Ignacio among the selection of ritual powders and herbs. Rumi Long ago, I spent a couple years nestled in the hills of Rio de Janeiro. The jungle-facing backyard was home to a family of marmoset monkeys, emerald hummingbirds, and the queen of the night - sumptuous, white-blooming datura. The word “beguiling” must have been composed for her perfume - not a fragrance but a full-blown spell that swells to a rich crescendo every nightfall.

Every night, the same ritual unfolded. After dusk the breeze would carry it into my room from the courtyard, gliding supreme over every other scent of the tropical night. 

The faintest hint of datura banished my ability to think. Stopped the clock.
Unique. Heavenly. Decadent. She brushed my every nerve like an aching violin. And it made me want to shred my own skin. It made my blood boil and my legs tremble with an unbearable lust for something not of this world. 
When I met Nadim in the temple, I could smell it in the air between us. The imperious summons of the datura bloom.

The @magicalbutter machine maiden voyage! So excited that it has a low enough voltage requirement to work off our off-grid solar system. I don’t have an issue with the slow cold infusion that takes six weeks… slow & steady has it’s place. But this infusion is a combination of Datura and Amanita for a pain salve… the alkaloids need heat to extract, and standing over a hot stove doing the double boiler method for 4-6hrs is simply time I don’t have! Datura is one of the many beautiful but poisonous botanical beings that remind us that nature does not exist in service of humankind. Nature is not benevolent nor are we its master. Plants and fungi are the foremost experts of chemistry on this planet and, while there are so many that we can use to heal us, others have the capacity to harm deeply or even kill. Still, this doesn’t mean that we should immediately reject them or fear them or that we cannot open our minds to learning from them. Tending to these plants with respect and reverence helps me better understand my minuscule place in the web of life. April 20, 2024 Happy Taurus Season! ♉. A pretty big storm is blowing through and bringing in wind, rain and chilly temperature. Most of the honey bees are staying put inside their hives, but I found this lady taking refuge from the storm inside a Datura wrightii "Moon Child" blossom... When honey bees out foraging, they will take note of the weather, and will try to rush home before any bad weather hits. But not all of them can make it home in time... If a honey bee gets caught in bad weather, she will try to find a safe spot to land and wait it out, just like this little lady here. And I am absolutely loving the protection this datura is offering. So many people misunderstand the true nature of Datura and her energy. Yes, she is poisonous and she can eff you up good if you don't know how to respect her. But she is also loving and protective, and she sure can heal (evidence can be seen in her role in medicines around the world). I spent a lot of time in my teens and twenties training as an Herbalist through a variety of different schools and other sources. These days, I still grow a lot of my own herbs and make various medicines for myself (Pine Oil has become a staple for me, especially, since my Fibromyalgia diagnosis in 2021). Herbs and I just ... Get along- and we get along /well/. Over the years, this love of Herbs has led me to not only being nicknamed "The Herb Lady" by my fellow Master Gardeners ... But also to a varied interest in Perfumery, Incensery, Tea and Spice blending, and even making my own Ritual Oils for my religious workings; my major dream (since going back to College to become a Public Horticulturist isn't exactly feasible) is to one day have a business of my own where I can make all of that a reality for myself. This year, Im Yirtzeh HaShem (because it's been a /rough/ 3 months), if my health finally leaves me be and lets me do anything, I want to start heading towards that dream by beginning to sell my own Ritual Oil blends. Or trying, at least. There are so many reasons why starting with Ritual Oils is the right choice. But it's terrifying, honestly; there's so much I have to learn- and even more that I have to figure out- and I'm sure of absolutely none of it; I feel so far out of my element and /very/ overwhelmed ... I have to stop being afraid of failure, however- and meeting such lovely people like the beautiful @nightritualsoccult has given me a lot of courage over the last couple of years. It's definitely going to take a while, though. I don't expect anything to start coming together for at least a year. But maybe making this post will hold me accountable, so that I can't just sweep it under the rug when I get overwhelmed by the anxiety of it all- which has been my MO for the last decade.
