About 15yrs ago we went to the woods in May on a camping trip to celebrate Beltane/Walpurgisnacht and we have been doing it ever since. People came and went, we’ve had freezing nights and heatwaves, some gatherings where small and intimate, some big and loud. We jumped over fires, swam by moonlight and made wobbly maypoles. The first year we where students and everyone came by bike or occasional motorcycle, now we come with cars and campervans. And probably the biggest change; the lovely flock of kids! Thank you if you where there this year, or any other year. It makes my heart glow! For the earth, for the kids, for the future. Beltaine holds a very special place in my heart — perhaps it’s because it’s the Celtic Holy Day which coincides with the day of my birth at 15 degrees Taurus. For the past 4 years I have assisted in nurturing this gathering while remembering the traditions of our European ancestors. The first year left me in awe of the absolute magic that unfolded. I had immersed myself in studying the myths of my Celtic ancestors and somehow an Irish bard found their way to the party. We took swigs of Irish Whiskey and swapped stories often picking up where the other dropped off…. filling in the holes of history long forgotten. The second year I marveled at the intelligence of the ritual of the Maypole and what it meant for the community to physically weave ribbons together. How it takes communication and patience. How it allows you to get up close and personal with people you may have only known from a distance. Every intention each person is carrying in the moment crosses with that of the others and is infused with the polarity of the masculine and the feminine. The birth of something new is initiated. The third year my partner and I hand-fasted and I was also secretly pregnant. Our maypole was weak that year and the ribbons were heavy. The pole broke from the weight while erecting it into the hole. We had to pause and as a community we retied all the ribbons to a sturdier part of the tree. While we did so, a baby crawled into the hole. The symbology of such an event was not lost on a member of our community as he asked me, “What do you think it means that a baby crawled in the hole during the ceremony?” I stuttered a bit and then thankfully someone called my name. Well, if we lived in Ireland we would have had the day off today, as the first Monday in May is Ireland’s Labor Day, and observance of May Day, or Beltaine (May 1st). Sadly, it’s just Monday here in the states… At least we have Irish Apple Crumb cake! This rich cake is loaded with tender apples and lots of butter, making it a perfect nod to May Day, a holiday that traditionally urged folks to make (or steal!) fresh butter as the butter churned on this day was thought to be lucky and bring prosperity to your home. It also features a crisp, buttery, oatmeal-crumb topping, but the crowning glory of this cake is a luxurious vanilla custard sauce that is poured on just before serving. Perfectionism Can stop us in so many ways… The code that emerged in this session was silly but true: “Let yourself flop like a fish! Do new things, fall, get back up and see where it takes you.” Often with perfectionism we get stuck on one way because someone told us it’s the “best pathway to success” or because to be innovative could remove us from getting our needs met. But what if there are innovative ways to find a new path while honoring restriction or a need from structured support? Does everything have to be so clean and clear cut? ~ it’s a good question to ask the inner perfectionist Listening to the book Braiding Sweetgrass on audio, I came across a chapter about how tending to and chopping a portion of the sweetgrass, and harvesting it actually gives it more of a chance to grow back stronger next season. It’s lesson was “give a little to the land to receive a little more back.” And I’m struck by the gift of this tale. Oftentimes we move from the head, putting pressure on ourselves to “figure it all out” from the ideas of peers, family or friends when in reality things can trickle or rush in from the most unexpected streams even from people related to a network we hadn’t previously tapped into. We harvest a little & see possibilities amplify. We don’t always know the what, when or how of the results. So what if the way we become graceful, more easeful and in flow is sometimes through these moments of a mess. Giving ourselves some time to sit back and notice when the chaos is irresponsible, grieve etc, and other times to celebrate when it’s actually opening us up to greater opportunities than we had originally thought, giving us the chance to see beyond the restrictions that kept us limited, bored, stagnant or painfully stiff while in contrast not opening up to a point where too many options make you lose a sense of vision, self, and purposeful drive. Bealtaine blessings during the month of May 🌼🪻🌀 As the new moon 🌑 approaches, it’s only really now I feel more in alignment to the true meaning of Bealtaine & so I marked it with my family with a ceremony to our ancestors - those who gave me life. One of the ways to know if you’re welcoming in helping compassionate guides of a good vibration, is to inquire to how you feel when you call them in. I felt awake, with a warm fuzzy feeling of familiarity along with a touch of nerves. It’s almost like seeing again for the first time. Ceremony for me is an energy cleansing, sending a clear message out to the spirit realms with an intention and to communicate it. My intention was to connect to my both my mother and father lines and to mark it with 2 candles and 2 ribbons and join them together. I also lay out little houses which I intend to take on pilgrimage to Ireland when I get the chance. These represent the homes which were burned down on purpose by others in authority, and when people were turned out of their homes around 200 years ago. This information came to me through a shamanic journey during a group ancestral ceremony a few months back, and I was then afterwards able to verify this had in fact happened in history. Today we happened to find a fairy tree on our travels which was lovely place to tie leftover ribbons and to leave the beeswax candles. I also left the land and spirits some offerings. If you ever visit relatives or friends, it’s quite likely you will take them something such as flowers or cake. The spirits of the land are no different. It’s important to honour them and pay respect. There is something so magical about bluebells in the month of May. Although there is continual heartache for what troubles people in other parts of the world go through, peace begins within. 🕊️ #beltaine #ceremony #ancestralhealing
