Humans have a complex and symbiotic relationship with nature, although the modern understanding of nature can often oversimplify our relationship with our environment. Poetry can bolster mental and emotional wellness, providing comfort and boosting mood during periods of stress and trauma. The combination of meter, metaphor, and imagery helps us make sense of the world around us. Different studies have found that poetry can be therapeutic for patients dealing with various types of adversity. Welcome to Episode Forty of The Nature of Wellness Podcast. On this episode, we sat down with nature poet and wellness advocate Jennifer Gordon. Jennifer is a yoga instructor, meditation guide, fitness instructor, avid hiker, and runner. Born out of “writing to process personal trauma,” Jennifer has published three poetry collections since 2021, mainly covering themes of love, loss, and the natural world. Her third project, “Blue-Colored Muse,” collaborates with different Michigan visual artists to celebrate the natural world. Die Amsterdamer Wasserleitungsdünen. (Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen) wurden für die Amsterdamer Trinkwasserversorgung eingerichtet. Diese Dünenlandschaft ist das älteste Wassergewinnungsgebiet der Niederlande. Und mal davon abgesehen, lässt es sich darin super wandern (oder auch drüber fliegen). Dabei kann man ganz nah Hirsche und andere Wildtiere beobachten und diese wirklich besondere Landschaft auf sich wirken lassen. Sat under a great sycamore, on the bend in the river, waiting for my friend to arrive, the towpath full of runners and walkers, some with dogs, some with prams. Then a lull. And a moment to savour the chorus of blackbirds, robins, goldfinches and wrens, the honk of a Canada goose, the fuss of a moorhen and the exasperated rasping of a mallard. King's Meadow In King's Meadow, where wildflowers stand, Golden heads sway, a vibrant band. Before "King's Kastle," bold and grand, Echoes of a greater Hand. "For the Lord Most High is awesome," Sings each petal in its blossom, The great King over earth and sky, Beneath His gaze, life passes by. Mighty is He, who paints these fields, In strokes of sun, nature yields, Each bloom a testament, a shield, In His presence, all is healed. “The Lighthouse of Tomorrow” My sorrows are not my own, They are connected to the waters and to the wind. My bones come from carbon that was never mine to have, I belong to the atmosphere. When I feel pain, I sense it rippling all around me, Anguish flows like a current through my soul. But they say the currents may stop, The jet stream will change course, The very axis of Earth will shift. My sorrow is not my own, It belongs to the universe.
