Yeah! Wij hebben walvissen gezien en heel veel dolfijnen! Wow wat was dat indrukwekkend. Ik heb altijd al een hele diepe verbondenheid gevoeld met walvissen. Als één van de oudste wezens op aarde beschikken ze over ongelooflijk veel intelligentie & wijsheid. Naast dat staat een walvis voor mij symbool voor innerlijke rust en oeroude wijsheid en kracht. Alleen al het bewonderen op afstand was zo rustgevend. Het is zo inspirerend hoe kalm deze grote dieren zich volledig op hun eigen intuïtie door de diepe oceanen bewegen. Eigenlijk net hoe wij soms diepe dalen in onszelf moeten nemen om beter inzicht te krijgen in ons eigen innerlijke wereld. En om in de chaos van het leven trouw te blijven aan je innerlijke kracht en vrede in jezelf. Wauw wat een ontmoeting! De eerste potvis die we zagen was een moeder met haar jong ♡ Het voelde allemaal zo perfect en symbolisch! Een overvloed aan dankbaarheid voel ik nog steeds door mijn hele lichaam! En wat was het bijzonder om dit samen te doen met Mare en @jannekembouman Thanks! Ik voel me ook voor jullie onwijs dankbaar! We spoke to @abcnews_au about Japan’s decision to hunt fin whales. “It’s not surprising, but it is very disappointing. Considering Japan has just built a new whaling mothership (the Kangei Maru) at a cost of $47 million, which has a slipway built to accommodate fin whales and is capable of returning to the southern ocean, targeting fin whales was always the next likely outcome. This doesn’t, however, detract from the extremely damaging practice of killing a vital part of the marine ecosystem for a food product that the population simply no longer wants or needs. “Traditions change, and it seems the Japanese people have already moved away from this food tradition by drastically reducing whale meat from their diet. Japanese whale meat consumption peaked at 230,000 tons in 1962 but has declined to 1,000 - 2,000 tons in recent years. That’s less than 1% of its peak. The pectoral fins on a humpback whale (technically their arms) can measure up to 5 metres long on an adult! Huge! It’s great seeing them flap around the water in playful behaviour, or stick them straight upwards while rolling on their sides to thermoregulate their body temperature (like when we stick an arm or leg out from under the blankets to cool down). WORLD TRAVELLERS Since the beginning of May the bay has been getting livelier by the day. Several humpback whales – the stars of the bay - have arrived, but also other species such as minkes and white-beaked dolphins were sighted. Then, even the most majestic of them all, the blue whale, made its appearance several times since late April. Along with the whales, also the amount of birds seen on the water has been increasing steadily. Among many other species, one of the most nomadic birds, the arctic tern, has returned. Arctic terns are such sun-loving, that they literally live two summers every year, migrating once around the globe yearly - that is up to 90'000km annually. In fact, in their life span (25-30 years) they cover a distance of about 2.4 million km, which is equal to three round-trips to the moon. Whilst migrating, artic terns aren't even bothered to take the most direct route, but adjust their travel plans according to weather and the best feeding grounds. As they spend the summer near the Arctic, but travel towards Antarctica during our winter, they see more daylight than any other animal on our planet. Whilst underway, they glide much of the time. These small birds turn out to be such great gliders that they even sleep whilst gliding through the air. Since they're so lightweight, ocean breezes can carry them far distances. On the other hand, they're among only few bird species (despite hummingbirds) that are capable to hover. Don’t forget to keep your eyes open for them while sailing on the bay scouting the waters for whales!
They say nature knows no borders, and this is especially true for species that migrate. The fact that nature does not, and cannot, align itself with national and international jurisdictions proves a huge challenge for migratory species conservation. Two days ago, a school of Menhaden abruptly fled from a horde of predators causing a wake on the water’s surface. I’ve filmed blitzes before, but this was something else. The fish swam nearly 2 miles within 20 minutes, ending in a boil so intense that oxygen levels became exhausted, leaving fish unconscious or worse. It was over before I could even comprehend what was happening. _ I don’t know if I would even call this a bluefish blitz, considering the mass of dolphins, sharks, and whales that caused such chaos. “Fauna feeding frenzy” feels more appropriate. The last few shots demonstrate a quintessential bluefish blitz, but everything else about this morning bewildered me. Choosing one subject to film amidst all this simultaneous action was tough. _ Whether it was intentional or opportunistic, it’s not often I see so many different species cooperate at this scale. It seems like the waters are just getting more and more active lately.
