Airavatesvara Temple is a Hindu temple of Dravidian architecture located in Kumbakonam in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. This temple, built by Chola emperor Rajaraja II in the 12th century CE is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the Brihadeeswara Temple at Thanjavur, the Gangaikondacholisvaram Temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram The Airavatesvarar temple is one among a cluster of eighteen medieval era large Hindu temples in the Kumbakonam District.The temple is dedicated to Shiva. It also reverentially displays Vaishnavism and Shaktism traditions of Hinduism, along with the legends associated with Nayanmars – the Bhakti movement saints of Shaivism. The stone temple incorporates a chariot structure, and includes major Vedic and Puranic deities such as Indra, Agni, Varuna, Vayu, Brahma, Surya, Vishnu, Saptamatrikas, Durga, Saraswati, Sri devi (Lakshmi), Ganga, Yamuna, Subrahmanya, Ganesha, Kama, Rati and others. Shiva's consort has a dedicated shrine called the Periya Nayaki Amman temple. This is a detached temple situated to the north of the Airavateshvarar temple. This might have been a part of the main temple when the outer courts were complete. At present, parts of the temple such as the gopuram is in ruins, and the main temple and associated shrines stand alone. It has two sun dials namely morning and evening sun dials which can be seen as wheels of the chariot. Croatian Getaway! 5/6 - Part 2 of 2 Despite the crowds, I tried to get Vince to laugh by making funny faces and self-deprecating jokes while taking selfies. Once we officially made it to the longer hiking trail, the crowd thinned out significantly, which gave us introverts a chance to breathe. And gave Vince an opportunity to propose. 🖤 We finished up our hike and made the lengthy drive to Zagreb and our last airbnb. After braving the city driving and parking the rental into the smallest parking area ever, we checked out a local pub and wandered a little in the downtown area of the city. We didn't know this before arriving, but Zagreb had a horrible earthquake in 2020, so a lot of historical buildings are closed for repairs. Het zoet vermengd met het ziltige wad. Zon op ons gezicht, gevuld hart. Heb jij het al eens gegeten ‘Nederlandse Vongole’?

Croatian Getaway! 5/6 - Part 1 of 2 In a previous post, I mentioned that Vince and I went on a hike through Plitvice Lakes National Park, so here are some of the photos I took from that hike. It was a three hour drive from our previous airbnb to the national park, so I had lots of time to take random photos of the roadway to show the tunnels and bridges they use to keep the highway flat. Plitvice Lakes National Park is stunning! Apart from multiple waterfalls, the color of the water is unreal. None of my photos have filters or touch-ups. The lakes are truly this gorgeous turquoise color and crystal clear in many areas. The paths are mostly laid out like a board walk, which compliments the natural beauty of these lakes. This national park is a Unesco World Heritage site and has ended up on many 2024 travel lists, so even though it's not the peak season, the park was very crowded on the main trails. La Torre de Belém è un autentico capolavoro dell'architettura portoghese ed è patrimonio Unesco. Voluta da Re Giovanni II e completata durante il primo ventennio del 1500, questa torre è stata progettata con la duplice funzione: difensiva da un lato e da porta cerimoniale per accogliere gli esploratori dell'epoca (Vasco da Gama su tutti) dall'altro.
