The lamidat of Demsa, founded around 1839 by the Fulani of the Wolarbé clan, is one of the great lamidats of the septentrion. Located some twenty kilometers from Garoua, it covers an area of 4,000 km². It is bounded to the west by the border with Nigeria, to the north by the lamidat of Bashéo, to the east by the lamidat of Garoua and to the south by the Bénoué river. The lamidat of Demsa is particularly renowned for its fantasias, which are famous for the number of horses taking part. Horses are central to this lamidat, as the Lamido houses a horse museum on his property and keeps around a hundred horses.
