The Mundane Rising with the sun, I head to the harbour. Gentle splashes of water lap against the breakwall. The pen sleeps on her nest, one wing shielding her eyes from the newly-risen sun. The cob feeds nearby. An egret preens on the rocks, stopping to grab a fish. Ducks and their offspring swim through reflections, mirroring our urban waterfront. A friend of my late husband stops by with coffee, which I drink, though I don't like coffee. It is warm—tasting of memories and friendship. Still Waitin' Well, bless my soul, cruisin' down 77, a shiver done run down my spine, Seen somethin' outta place, like a catfish onna vine. There by that faded billboard, all flappin' and tore, Sat an old Ford Fairlane, lookin' mighty forlorn. Red bubble light on top, kinda tilted and glintin', Like a bloodshot eye waitin' for a sinner to be chasin'. But the driver's seat was empty, nary a soul in sight, Just that rusty hulk, holdin' on wit' all its might. Seems that time done passed it by, left it stranded in the heat, But that ol' Fairlane, she ain't givin' up defeat.
