Song: Journey To The Real World Artist: Tame Impala Album: Barbie The Album (2023) Genre: Alternative Composer: Kevin Parker Journey To The Real World This song is a very psychedelic experience for the sake of the ironic premise of traveling to a place that is the exact opposite of that, which I guess makes sense for this song. I didn’t watch the movie, but I felt there was enough variety in the soundtrack to study the forms in the tracklist. This song changes frequencies with every measure, hence why it’s so colorful and interesting in its progression. The final cords that strike are a bright white, and flood the atmosphere of viscous forms representing the synths and chimes. The beat in this song (black) seems to stand out more in this image than it does in the song, precisely because of how vibrant and colorful the synths are in comparison. I had fun with this one. *synesthesia? Synesthesia is a rare neurological phenomenon where the stimulation of one sense/cognitive function triggers that of another separate and unrelated sense/cognitive function. Song: Tried Our Best Artist: Drake Album: For All The Dogs Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap Composers: Drake, J Sweet & Noah “40” Shebib Tried Our Best I’m sure that Drake intended the tone of this song to be condescending and misogynistic, but ironically it’s more damning and self-deprecating than I think he realizes. Some things shouldn’t be in a song, but not too much ‘cuz Kendrick already exposed. It’s painful to admit that the music itself is absolutely gorgeous without Drake on it. There was never any doubt in the competence of OVO’s producers to make degeneracy sound good. The harp creates an effect that looks like crimson plasma bolts shooting up into the sky, and the atmosphere of this track is like the convergence of a winter sky and an autumn landscape in a thunderstorm, in which case the lightning would be the smooth bass line and the harp (linework). It’s still very commercial in it’s sound and scope that many would overlook the lyrics. I don’t think anyone would think twice about playing Drake at a function just because of his unwarranted openness about his toxic relationships with younger women, but I paint music, I don’t review artists. I wouldn’t feel the need to say anything at all if Drake wasn’t so open on this track. There was an era for this, but Drake is 40 now. Like, damn, I really didn’t need to hear that.😭 *synesthesia? This song contains a very beautiful transition during its bridge from bright blue to a deep red, and this effect is so captivating with the musical composition of this song as the choir, piano, and background vocals transition from utter despair to immense hopefulness as she learns to lean into her own emotions to determine whether or not her relationship with her guy is suiting her or not, in spite of the public perception of their dynamic. This song is particularly compelling because it’s narratively ambiguous to me as to whether what she was escaping was the impact of the voices around her or the relationship itself, so depending on who’s listening it will hit different. The 808s also create the most dynamic forms in this track, in the form of black linework that both spirals and cascades into the hi-hats (white) below. Nicki’s vocals create much of the light in this track, that mostly brightens up the darker forms on the right from the left. The way the forms swirl around create a smoother visual consistency as opposed to a heavy viscosity that Travis’s sample is mostly responsible for. Despite the feminine title, the frequencies in this track are more masculine compared to the others, but that’s just because of the sample. *synesthesia? My love of Sculpting has had to lay dormant for a while, but my love of this form of expression has never wavered. Perhaps my being born on the same day of the year as Michelangelo Buonarroti (489 years later), has motivated me to yearn to create 3-D art. It is so deeply gratifying. This work in progress is approx 3'x 3' so far, and is only in it's infancy. It is a commissioned work for a local nonprofit , and I am forever grateful for this opportunity, and for the technical advice from a local St. Pete Sculptor. One of my first 3-D sculptures, created in 1982, later embellished after my mom died with all my jewelry she had given me, after I had painted him with the markings of her beloved cat, Munson. This piece was shown at The A E Backus Museum in 2015 in the Best of the Best Show, and in Art Mundo's Treasure themed show the same year, and took prizes in both. It was my first time showing my work as an adult, I had never had the confidence before. “Fear” - markers on copy paper I just got out of over a week inpatient in a psych facility. After three days with no meds I began to hallucinate (as I do in mania). I begged for meds for so long before getting an anxiety pill. This fueled my rage as I told the nurse I need antipsychotics soon before I lose all touch with reality.
