As it's May the 4th be with you day, I thought I'd focus on Astronaut Lamby for Spotlight Saturday. This was the first of the Lamby stories I wrote and hailed the start of my collaboration with @hollybushnellillustration I actually had the initial idea for this story 20 years ago when I was teaching in London. I was listening to David Bowie's Starman at the end of the day and the story popped into my head. It sat in a folder until the time was right and I adapted it to feature Lamby. 📚Misty mornings feat. my dog Morgan + White Nights. This passage from White Nights especially caught my eye as I had never seen much proper romanticism in Dosto’s work before! The healing power of nature is a trope often seen in Gothic works; the Female Gothic genre specifically, where the frightened, tortured woman will find a sudden rapture that heals her soul in the Power of Nature. This is the same, the narrator leaving the stuffy walls of St Petersburg and finding solace in nature. Dostoevsky’s St Petersburg is such a staple of his influence, as it’s an atmosphere and allegory used by a plethora of other authors. The grey buildings, misty atmosphere, corruption around every corner. #qotd have you read White Nights? ^ I definitely recommend it! Especially if you haven’t read any Dostoevsky before!
