💡 Have you ever had that moment where someone tells you something that you know is good for you but you really don’t want to do it? That happened to me a few days ago. I’m fortunate enough to have a friend who is way more knowledgeable about writing craft than I am. She read part of my book and was honest with me—I could drastically cut down my word count, which would also cut my publishing costs. I’m at the point where I don’t know if I want to go back and edit my book again, especially when I’ve been shooting to publish by the end of this year. But… If I’m honest with myself, I know my friend is right—there’s just too many words. I’ve suspected so for a while but have been too stubborn to admit it. Plus, this could be an opportunity to fix some continuity problems I’ve already spotted as I’m drafting Book Two. And aside from that, does my story really need the excess? As in life, sometimes we surround ourselves with more than we need out of fear—fear that others will see us for who we are, fear that we might be without instead of learning to trust the Lord’s provision, fear that we’ll miss opportunities. Writing can feel that way, too. We writers spend so much time laboring over our stories, and sometimes we don’t trust the readers to understand them the way we intend. Thus, the unnecessary descriptions and extra details. #throwbackthursday to the book that gave me the idea for my book! Six years ago I read @lois.pryce travelogue about journeying around #iran on a motorcycle for a book club. Pryce mentioned a travel writer and explorer who had also explored Iran decades before - Freya Stark. I knew about Freya, had even read her books while I was in Afghanistan. But I didn't know about one of her first adventures. Pryce mentioned traveling through an area where Freya had tried and failed to find the Bronzes of Luristan. In an instant, an idea flashed into my head. What if Freya had found the treasure? What if she couldn't reveal the whole story? I knew I would write that story someday. I'm incredibly grateful for this book - and not just for the novel inspiration.Pryce is a modern-day Freya Stark and has so many amazing adventures. I wrote this poem when I was very young. I am not sure what caused the teenage angst...probably a boy. Now all these years later I am pulling it out again. I am not sure if my own words will help me or not, but maybe they will help someone else who is suffering. May is Mental Health Awareness month, so we all have to do what we can to heal our hearts from the grief that life brings forth sometimes. QOTD: What's that project you were too afraid to finish? I wrote Dream Interrupted last year during a period of intense self-reflection, but was too chicken shit to share it with anybody. My experience with this beautiful community and bringing Alex Bain to you all has given me the courage to revisit this project. Below is a little overview. Let me know what you think! Dream Interrupted is best described as women’s fiction blended with elements of fantasy, magical realism, and a little bit of scary, complete with magical boutiques, miracles, vampires, and even a dragon or two. Chloe Perne spends her days as a typical mom, but after meeting Old Pomba Gira in an airport in Brazil, her life takes a turn for the interesting. She has one night to somehow resolve the long-buried conflicts and trauma from her past, or else lose her precious family forever. Every time her eyes flutter shut, she is beckoned into the dark, oily marshland of The Place—a shifting tapestry of her unconscious mind that portals her into personas and memories not visited since childhood. Each dream is a fantastical metaphor for a chapter of her life, representing a core piece of her identity and long buried trauma. With each successive adventure, the desolate landscape of the Place blooms brighter, drawing her ever closer to two enigmatic figures dancing at its distant edge. But how real is the danger of Pompa Gira’s deadline? And how real are the dreams themselves? Yes, I know it's a day late, but it was Public Holiday here in the UK on Monday, which means I have no idea what day it is 🤣 E has discovered BGT, which means she binge watched all the audition episodes in a day. Luckily, she did it on her tablet with her headphones on most the time! We're currently enjoying our alloted one week of summer in the UK, so everyone, including Macavity, has been enjoying the sun. And writing has been a little slower as I swapped out for final edits on my next release. Nancy K. Jentsch's chapbook, Intersecting Orbits, is available from Bottlecap Press! In Intersecting Orbits, the author’s sense of awe is never in question. In fact, the poems in this chapbook often catch her looking up at the sky, be it in wonder or in supplication. In 2020, with no Smartphone in hand and a grandchild on the way, Nancy K. Jentsch began writing poems to capture what can’t be seen through a camera lens, but is just as worthy of being remembered as photos kept in an album. These snapshot poems, seven-line poems of seven syllables each, document the beginning of her journey with her first grandchild. Twelve of these poems are included in Intersecting Orbits where they are complemented by related poems that comment on Jentsch’s experience of rural life, a life that knows not only breath-taking sunsets and lush meadows but also rainy days and even the memory of a childhood snakebite. Nancy K. Jentsch’s chapbook Authorized Visitors and the collaborative ekphrastic chapbook Frame and Mount the Sky, in which her poetry appears, were published in 2017. Her collection Between the Rows debuted in 2022. Since she began to write in 2008, her work has appeared in journals such as Amethyst Review, Crowstep Poetry Journal, Tiferet Journal, and Zingara Poetry Review. What helps you stay balanced while perusing your writing goals? *friends and community *mental health care *knowing which balls to drop “One time, I was at a Q&A with Nora Roberts, and someone asked her how to balance writing and kids, and she said that the key to juggling is to know that some of the balls you have in the air are made of plastic & some are made of glass. And if you drop a plastic ball, it bounces, no harm done. If you drop a glass ball, it shatters, so you have to know which balls are glass and which are plastic and prioritize catching the glass ones. I think about this ALL THE TIME. I dropped more than one ball today. It is hard to drop any ball, and I hate it! But they were plastic, and tomorrow, it will be okay. As this has gone viral, I have seen a lot of people interpreting this as “your kids are the glass ball” and/or referring to speeches made by men about juggling five balls, where work is plastic and family is glass. That’s not what Nora was saying in this case. Nora was not talking about juggling five balls. She was talking about juggling FIFTY-FIVE balls. The balls don’t represent “family” or “work.” There are separate balls for everything that goes into each of those categories. “Deadline on Project Y” or “crazy sock day at school” And her point, addressing a room full of women, was not “prioritize kids over work.” It was “some kid stuff is glass and some is plastic, and sometimes, to catch a glass work ball, you have to drop a plastic family one, and that is okay.” And the reverse is also true.
