✧ what’s the last book you dnf’ed ✧ I started Happy Place with neither high or low expectations because I’ve heard all kinds of opinions about it. However, after reading a little more than a quarter of the book, I decided to DNF it. I’m too bothered about the miscommunications and the toxicity of the characters and it was putting me in a bit of a reading slump because I just didn’t feel like picking it up. I have other books I rather read right now. And even though I’m kind of soft-dnfing it, I’m definitely not picking it up right now. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one at the book club that didn’t enjoy it and I even enjoyed our discussion about it bitching about how unlikable the characters seemed to us. Have you read Happy Place? বিভিন্ন বইয়ের গ্রুপে অনেকদিন ধরেই সন্মাত্রানন্দের 'হাওয়ার মতন, নেশার মতন ' বইটা দেখছিলাম এবং পড়ার অদম্য ইচ্ছায় এই বছরের বইমেলা থেকে বইটা কিনেই নিলাম। ভূমিকাটা পড়তে গিয়ে ভীষণভাবে ভালো লেগেছিল এই বইয়ের মূল কনসেপ্টটা। যেখানে সন্মাত্রানন্দ 'পরিণতিকামিতা'র কথা বলেছেন। তিনি বলছেন - "আমরা চাই, জীবনে সবটা মিলে কিছু একটা ঘটুক। একটা পর্যাপ্ত পরিণতি হোক জীবনের। আমাদের মনের এই প্রবণতা এত মারাত্মক যে আমরা এই জীবনে বাঁচতেই ভুলে যাই। জীবনের কোন একটা বা দুটো ফলবান খন্ডকে আমরা আঁকড়ে ধরে রাখতে চাই। যদিও সমগ্র জীবন আমাদের বুক থেকে সেসব প্রিয় খেলনাকে যথাসময়ে খোলামকুচির মত ছিনিয়ে নিয়ে চলে যায়। হাহাকার ছাড়া আসক্ত মানুষের আর কোন সম্বল থাকে না অন্তিমে। মানুষের মনের এই ভয়ানক দুষ্প্রবৃত্তিকে আমি 'পরিণতিকামিতা' নামে চিহ্নিত করছি। এই কাহিনী শুরু হয় জীবনের আর্বতে ঘুরতে থাকা দুজন সাধারণ মানুষ অরণ্য আর তাপ্তিকে নিয়ে। কিন্তু সাধারণ হওয়ার মধ্যেই তো সবথেকে বেশি অসাধারণত্ব লুকিয়ে থাকে। তাই, জীবনের একাধিক সমস্যা, আর্থিক অভাব, চাকরির অনিশ্চয়তা - এই সবকিছুর মধ্যেও জীবন থেকে সেরকম কোন গভীর প্রত্যাশা না রেখেই তারা বাঁচে। দক্ষিণ কলকাতার সোনারপুরে পুরনো বাড়ির একটি ঘর ভাড়া নিয়ে অরণ্য থাকে। আগে সেই ঘরে বাস করতেন সঙ্গীত শিল্পী ও সঙ্গীত শিক্ষক ব্রতীন্দ্রনাথ দাশগুপ্ত ও তার স্ত্রী লালি। অরণ্যের সেই ঘরে বসবাস শুরু করার পর থেকেই সেখানে কিছু অদ্ভুত ঘটনার সূত্রপাত হয়। সেইসব ঘটনার কার্য কারণ অনুসন্ধানে অরণ্যের যাত্রা শুরু হয়। সেই যাত্রা চলে কলকাতার গন্ডী পেরিয়ে, মেদিনীপুর থেকে চন্দ্রকোণা। এই কার্য কারণ উৎস খোঁজার পথেই অরণ্যের সাথে দেখা হয় তাপ্তির এবং এই যাত্রায় জড়িয়ে পড়ে সেও। লেখক বলছেন - "জীবনের মর্মমূলে গিয়ে একজন মানুষ যখন আরেকজন মানুষকে আবিষ্কার করে, যখন বাইরের পৃথিবীর যাবতীয় সম্পর্ক, সমাজ, পরিস্থিতি, প্রয়োজন সমস্ত হেমন্তের কুয়াশার আড়ালে যেন নিঃশেষ অবলুপ্ত হয়ে যায়, যখন অন্তর্গত মনোভূমির আশা, হতাশা, মান, অপমান, ঘৃণা, প্রণয় কিংবা করুণার সানুনয় আবেদনও থেমে আসে, তখন সেই মৃত্যুর নিকষ অন্ধকারের ভেতর ভালোবাসার যে দীপ্তি জেগে ওঠে, সেই অনুরাগের অভিজ্ঞতা চিরকাল স্মৃতিধার্য হয়ে থাকে যে! সে কেবল একবারই হয় কোন তন্ময় মূহুর্তে।" 'হাওয়ার মতন, নেশার মতন' পড়ার সময় এই কথাটির অন্তর্নিহিত অর্থই বারবার মনে ঘুরে ফিরে এসেছে। . This book shattered me. Ordinarily this would be a story of the boy next door that falls for his best friends sister. Except Jennifer takes it and twists it, molding it into a story that wrecks you. I expect nothing less from her though. I'm still thinking about Still Beating so it's only fitting that June First now lives in the wreckage with that one. June and Brants story covers their whole lives forced together after a horrible tragedy leaving Brant in the care of the Baileys. Split apart by three tragedies Brant and June cover their story full of heart ache and trials. Just be prepared for lots of tears.🤧😥 I cried A Lot. I truly loved this book.💕🌈 Normally I'm all for recommending to jump right into something I've just finished and loved, but I gotta give a warning. Don't read her work unless you are emotionally prepared to get crushed. Don't get me wrong the story is amazing (Jennifer is an Amazing author.) and throws your feelings around like a tornado. Book Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Unbelievable. This was such an emotional read and made me remember how much I love Historical Fiction. I cried so many times. The way that the events are laid out was so meticulous and thought out. The descriptions of Vietnam were vivid and so honest. I feel like it was a tough subject to discuss the trauma that the soldiers received in Vietnam and the unwelcome spirit that came along once they were brought home. You can see the amount of research that Kristin must have put in. I was captivated by Frankie’s story from start to finish. I loved how her story didn’t have this beautiful neat bow to wrap it up at the end. It was unexpected and so realistic with the way life throws us curveballs. The way that I saw so many parallels between today’s political unrest and protests over the current war in Gaza and the protests described in this book was so topical and necessary. The history book on the shelf really does keep repeating itself. My favorite quote of the book is: “This isn’t a joke,” Barb said. “The old white men who run this country are scared. And people do stupid, ugly things when they’re scared.” She leaned close. “But they’re counting on their power and our fear. And every minute, some woman’s son is being killed over there. Some girl’s brother.” This book was equal parts eyeopening and a rallying cry. Honey by Isabel Banta ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ June 25, 2024 Thank you to the publisher for the gifted (free) ARC There are so many aspect of this book I enjoyed. Mentions of bearded dragons, Kissimmee FL, first ever awards shows that I grew up watching. (Cuz the book is set late 90s into early 2000s) When I first sat down to read this I really wasn’t in the mood, but the next thing I knew I’d read 150 pages. Honey follows Amber Young on her rise to stardom, and shows the struggles she endures to get there. It’s raw, brutal at times, and ultimately a thought provoking story. I really enjoyed this read and would definitely recommend it.

I had the time of my life reading, annotating and reviewing this book🥹 so here are some of my favorite passages🌷 Cal’s story made me fall in love with the tropes “second chance romance” and “daddy’s girl”💝 The “forced proximity” and the “small town romance” were already a favorite of mine but I had never been fond of the second chances in love stories as they never worked in me lmao. But the rawness and realness of Cal’s flaws and issues, made it so smooth that I was BEGGING for Lana to give him a second chance.🙏🏼 I felt like Cal was at an advantage being the last to have his story written, as his character could have developed throughout the first two books🪴. However, Declan and Rowan kept appearing in all the books, which allowed their characters to grow in depth. They all have now a profound and differentiated character and I can categorize them in my head.👥 What I also loved about these three books was the depiction of women. In romance books, I feel that it is very easy for authors to fall into the “damsel in distress, knight comes and saves her”⚔️ But Zahara, Iris and Lana were independent and strong woman that took their own decisions and never let any man step over them.🙅🏽♀️ They even teased the men who tried to treat them as indefensible💋💪🏼 I loved and appreciated the strength in character of each of them, like never giving in when put in a delicate position💫 Last but not least, I LOVED the extended epilogue. 👻 BOOK REVIEW 👻 REVIEW 🔽 I sprinted from the second book straight into this third installment, and thankfully, it picks up right where we left off. What I've noticed with these books is that the second and third entries dive headfirst into action, gripping the reader from the get-go. However, there's a bit of a lull in the middle that could use some tightening up. Then it revs back up towards the end. Seems to be the recurring pattern. It's been a while since I finished this one, but what sticks with me are the vibes of more intricate mythology that left me a wee bit confused. There's this spine-chilling action sequence involving the dead. And, I admit, I didn't know there was a difference between a goddess and a deity. *shrugs* All in all, I was left itching for more, but alas, I didn't have the next book in the series on hand. Can't wait for the next installment, but I'll definitely need a refresher before diving back in. ✨ Series Review - Spoilers ✨ all books in this series: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ while i'm still chasing the ACOTAR high, i thoroughly enjoyed reading throne of glass. so many plot twists and an emotional roller-coaster. i know many of my followers are starting their TOG journey, so here are my thoughts (minor spoilers ahead): 1. you DO NOT need to read Assassin's Blade first. everyone kept saying to read it first, but i read the series in written order (with AB being fourth), and i personally believe it should be read third. but again, it is up to you on how you'd like to read it. if you want the FMC to have her secrets for awhile, read it third. you want to know the FMC's background up front, read it first. there's no right or wrong answer. 2. i am pro tandem read. it seemed daunting at first but i am so happy i did it. 3. it's so hard to pick which book was my favorite, but i loved TOG, QOS, TOD and KOA. 4. this series does have romance and is a slow burn. 5. i do not care much for Rowan. he's supposed to be this all high and mighty warrior, but all he did was follow Aelin like a love sick puppy and barely had any character development. however, he is king of "who did that to you?" so there's that. 6. i love Chaol. he doesn't deserve the hate he gets. 7. i still can't talk about the thirteen without crying. 8. Book Review: Happy Saturday! I finished my buddy read with @booklovingtaylor yesterday and really enjoyed it. Here’s my review: “Okay. So this was not something I would have normally read. I try to avoid reading things with lots of cursing and trigger warnings just because I’m one of the faint of heart who hate it when people are mean to each other. But I kept hearing amazing things from friends on here like @jennas.bookclub and @sophmaereads especially so I decided to try it. And I don’t regret it. Not one bit. I loved this book. I’ve heard that they were huge books but they are worth every single page. I was never bored with this book. Shannon, my girl. I don’t know why all of the bad things were done to her and she still has hope. She has every reason not to trust Johnny yet she does with everything in her. Again not understanding how people can be so rude, especially those that should love you. She is determined and while she is fearful in my eyes she is brave. Because she expects what’s coming and takes her to spare others. She loves with everything and Johnny is the only one that is worthy of her attention. Johnny, my sweet boy. Well sometimes not so sweet but protective. And it’s insane. I was falling for this guy quickly. I know that he has been used and what not but I am curious as to see if why he is so violent comes up. He loves Shannon and is so protective of her. He wants the best for her and wants her to take no crap from anyone. He loves fiercely. All the side characters are important for this story. They either stand by Johnny and Shannon or they lead them to make the decisions that define who they are as people. But I do love Gibsie like a lot! His bromance with Johnny and protection of Shannon. Oh goodness taming 7 will be interesting. Hate Bella, Cormac, Celia, the dad, the mom but you know it’s whatever justice should be served. Anyway I loved this book so much! This one was weird to say the least but I definitely wouldn’t classify it as a horror novel. Maybe suspense? I flew through it in a day because the writing is so easy to follow since our narrator is a young girl of maybe 6? It was a solid 4⭐️ read and the ending left me with SO many questions which I didn’t mind because I finished this book a few weeks ago and I still think about it. I went into this book completely blind which you should do if you have a tendency to predict what is going to happen in a book easily. There were a lot of twists and turns and then this massive build up towards the ending and then it just hits you like a bus at the end. Like really catches you off guard in a good way. I don’t know how to describe it. Maybe it was done on purpose because I could see myself puzzling over this ending for a long time and talking with other readers about it for months. Overall it was a good book. Read more like a campfire scary story than a horror book but I consider it a palette cleanser in a way. I think readers with enjoy it due to its easy language and good story flow. I devoured it in a day. A quick one sentence synopsis: A girl and her family haunted by an entity called Other Mommy have to figure out how to get rid of it before it’s too late. This could be a great entrance into the horror genre book. It isn’t too scary, it reads easily, and can show people what horror is about without making you completely scared. This now means that I have 3 other books to post about.🤭 Now here’s finally my post for Kingdom Of Ash… ⭐️5/5 “Once upon a time, in a land long since burned to ash, there lived a young princess who loved her kingdom.” Honestly, I also haven’t posted about this one right away because it would feel more real that the series was over, and I wasn’t ready for that yet. This is seriously one of the best series I have ever read, and this book is 100% my favorite read of the year (ACOMAF is up there too though hehe). This book was a freaking ROLLERCOASTER. I was captivated the entire time and I am still stunned by Sarah J. Maas’s creativity and talent. Did I cry four times while reading this book? Yes. Was I not okay after finishing this? Yes. REVIEW: The Family Upstairs: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 After being inundated with fantasy, I definitely needed a pallet cleanser so picking up this thriller was exactly what I needed I’d read Lisa Jewell before and had really liked Then She Was Gone so thought I would give her another try. I enjoyed this more so for the ending. I was gripped throughout and was always asking questions but the actual final reveal was anticipated and predicted. It was the very last twist of everything that made it a four rather than a mid three. It took a while to get used to as it switched between first and third person as well as between times/settings but once i got past that, it was pretty smooth sailing. Interesting characters, nice London setting but as mentioned, a little predictable and a little implausible how some of the characters managed to disappear. That's the post. Connor Cobalt. Enough said. *** This book shocked me so much, I swear my jaw was on the floor the whole time! I don't know what I was expecting from Connor Cobalt... but this was not it. I expected this with Ryke, but yes, sir... I was here for it!! This was a masterpiece. I adored Connor Cobalt and Rose. The way he really saw her. He challenged her. He was patient with her. He understood her. And he stood with her. Did it take me a minute to get my head around the reality show concept? Yes. But I absolutely loved every second. Connor Cobalt was a freaking treat, and Rose is a fierce queen. I want to be Rose Calloway when I grow up because she is a total boss bitch who takes no prisoners and is her sisters fiercest protectors. At the moment, this is hands down my favorite of the series. And I will take no criticisms on this book or these people.

Another great book by Emily St. John Mandel! Once again, she’s doing what she does best: different timelines, none linear story telling and different perspectives that are eventually connected in a fascinating way. I went into this book without knowing anything about the plot, and that was the best decision because it was so cool trying to figure out what was the thread that connected these people. My favorite chapter i think was „the last book tour on earth“. We follow an author while she’s touring for her novel that is about a pandemic, and I’d like to think that maybe Emily St. John Mandel based this character at least partly of herself. I just found her thoughts so fascinating.. it felt like the book was self reflecting which in turn leads the writer to self reflect as well. I gave this book 4/5 stars because I thought it was lacking something I can’t put my finger on. Have you read Wolfsong? I can see this book being a bit divisive - you either love it or don’t. and i have to say i LOVED it. i read all 500+ pages in 2 days. Wolfsong, Book 1 of the Green Creek series by Klune follows Ox whose father tells him he isn’t worth anything and that his life won’t amount to anything, before walking out the door forever. Then the Bennett family returns to the house next door and Joe Bennett draws Ox into their world. We get a decade spanning journey as Ox finds his place in the world of the Bennetts and slowly begins to understand the connection between himself and Joe. oh yeah, and they’re werewolves. With the kind of big hearted emotion that i expect from a Klune novel Wolfsong is devastating in its sincerity. Where the other Klune novels i’ve read are a warm hug this one is a gut punch, but i loved every painful second. i can’t wait to read the next one.
