He was supposed to be passing through with his furry friend when the smell of cooking lured him in and the sight of the most beautiful woman he’d seen kept him lingering. With the odds in his favour as Ardal suffers an injury during an attack on the city he then requires a healer - cue Sylvie. It’s decided his treatment and recovery would do best under the watchful eye of Sylvie in her small cottage 🫶. The story blooms from there. It is just the most wholesome story with great characters, laughs and it’s even spicy! So a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read for me. 📚 Come Out, Come Out by @alexiaonyxauthor This book touches on heavy subjects. It's dark, a little angsty, and won't be for everyone! Please check the TWs before reading. I thought this book was a really interesting read. It's a slow burn as our MMC can only physically appear to our FMC a couple of times a year - so he has to watch over her and pine from the sidelines. Both the MCs in this story are hurting, one from grief and the other from severe depression. As a fellow sad girlie, I think the author does a great job of portraying depression and the emotional toll it takes. Siamo a quota quattro libri letti di Jane Austen 🎉 Ho iniziato a leggere la grande autrice inglese soltanto l’anno scorso e, con molta calma, sto recuperando tutti i suoi capolavori. 🫰🏻 Nonostante la sua grande fama, devo confessare che “Orgoglio e pregiudizio” non è il mio preferito tra questi, anzi, se dovessi metterli in classifica, essa vedrebbe: 1. Ragione e sentimento 🧠 2. Emma 👰♀️ 3. L’abbazia di Northanger 📖 4. Orgoglio e pregiudizio 🫡 Se avete letto soltanto “Orgoglio e pregiudizio” vi consiglio vivamente di recuperare tutti gli altri. Per “Ragione e sentimento” vi rimando alla recensione sul profilo; per quanto riguarda “Emma,” è il romanzo perfetto per chi ama gli intrighi e le protagoniste che amano cacciarsi nei guai (che loro stesse provocano.) Emma è un’eroina anti-convenzionale, talmente fuori dalle righe che l’autrice stessa ammette che potrebbe non piacere a nessuno, se non a lei stessa. Ne “L’abbazia di Northanger” non solo è presente una protagonista altrettanto sovversiva, ma la penna di Jane Austen si fa più polemica: l’autrice inglese ironizza sul romanzo gotico e sulle suggestioni da esso create, difendendo a spada tratta il suo genere letterario, giudicato negativamente perché “non implica sforzi intellettuali” (siamo nel 2024 e questo luogo comune esiste ancora. 🤮) Conto di recuperare gli ultimi due romanzi in libreria, “Persuasione” e “Mansfield Park,” entro quest’anno e di portarvi le recensioni per avere un quadro completo dell’opera di Jane Austen. ⏱️ E voi? Les llamó mucho la atención que hasta 5º tuviéramos una sola maestra para todas las asignaturas, por eso esa maestra forma parte de nuestros recuerdos más importantes. Para los que hemos crecido en Villar, otra persona que forma parte de nuestros recuerdos es Tere. Más conocida como Tere la de la biblioteca. Tere Vallés nació en Cerico Navero, provincia de Palencia. Su padre, Don José Vallés era un hombre instruido, tenía tres carreras. Cuando acabó la última, que fue Magisterio, pidió como destino Valencia. Él era valenciano y siempre había querido volver a su tierra. Y, por un punto no se fue a Carcaixent, vino a Villar del Arzobispo. Tere recuerda que su padre se informó sobre aquel, para ellos, desconocido pueblo y dijo que era el más sano de España. El 21 de diciembre de 1975 se fundó la biblioteca municipal, siendo alcalde Jesús Mínguez y Antonio Quílez concejal de cultura. Una norma de la biblioteca, de las más curiosas, decía que se podían admitir niños a partir de 7 años, siempre que dieran la impresión de que tenían idea de la lectura. La cuota costaba 100 pesetas anuales a los del pueblo y 25 a los veraneantes por temporada. Tere me cuenta que fue feliz en su trabajo. Estudió mecanografía, taquigrafía y orientación en bibliotecas en Valencia. Recuerda cuando llegaban las cajas con los libros. Les ponía el sello, escribía a máquina la ficha y pegaba el tejuelo en el lomo. La enciclopedia estrella fue el Monitor. Resistió hasta los últimos días de trabajo de la bibliotecaria, cuando las páginas se caían por el uso. BOOK REVIEW "The Meaning of Night", Michael Cox My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐/5 Goodreads Average Rating: 3.72 Cox’s novel made an extremely favourable first impression on me, and I hoped that it would turn out to be a new favourite. His writing is subtle and atmospheric, perfectly capturing the tone of a classic Victorian novel with strong echoes of Dickens and Collins. Cox unabashedly shows off his knowledge of Victoriana (including through the painstaking use of footnotes), but I found this a nerdy delight. His bravura opening sentence sets up a fascinating protagonist, whose narrative seems strongly influenced by “David Copperfield”; in fact, one might argue that the novel as a whole takes Dickens’ famous opening line as a point of departure, as the reader spends the novel trying to decide whether Edward G* is the (anti-)hero or the villain of Cox’s story. What follows is a compelling piece of psychological drama that features an unreliable narrator, plenty of classic Gothic tropes, and a fantastic game of cat and mouse between G and his nemesis. Unfortunately, the last quarter of the novel proves to be a disappointment. I had hoped for something more than the (glaringly obvious) “reveal” of the villain's identity - I was hoping Cox would lean in harder to the unreliability of his protagonist’s narration, particularly in terms of his depiction of his enemy. With a slightly reworked plot, a bit of judicious editing (the current text feels a trifle overlong), and a different ending, I think this could be a wonderful novel. Di fatti la cantina del negozio del barbiere è collegata a quella del negozio della signora Lovett, famosa per la bontà dei suoi pasticci di carne. La gente non sa, però, che carne usi per rendere speciale la sua ricetta. Le motivazioni di entrambi sono la sete di denaro e anche di riscatto sociale. Le persone che vengono a scoprirlo hanno la stessa sorte dei clienti del barbiere, fino a che non verrà uccisa la persona sbagliata, che attiverà un meccanico che porterà alla scoperta di tutto. Se chiedevi di un certo Sweeny Todd nella Londra vittoriana, la gente si girava dall'altra parte schifata. Il suo è stato un caso di cronaca nera senza precedenti, che ha fatto sì che si creassero tante storie sul suo conto, facendola diventare quasi una leggenda. Un gruppo di autori della "Salisbury Square school of Fiction" scrissero tra il 1846 e il 1850 il libro tratto da questo fatto di cronaca, che ha ispirato negli anni 2000 il regista Tim Burton per il suo film musical. La difficoltà nella lettura di questo libro è il fatto che ogni capitolo è scritto da una persona diversa, per tanto lo stile e il linguaggio sono differenti. Ci sono parti che scorrono bene e altre che sono macchinose. Nel complesso l'ho trovato un buon libro ottocentesco. Lo consiglio a chi ama le storie un po' splatter, quasi horror. In my medieval romance era! Don't mind me chasing dragons, seducing knights, and eating bread with cheese three times a day. The Deed by @lynsaysands was one of the funniest novels I have read in a while. I loved how Sands took the virgin FMC trope and decided to push to the extreme, giving us a final boss level virgin. And then paired her with an MMC who was basically socialised by wolves. Those two really needed the help of all the people around them to turn their marriage of convenience into a marriage of love. Tout du long, l'atmosphère est pesante, sombre et on sent que la vengeance approche pour Oswald et ses compagnons de route. J'ai adoré connaître le passé d'Oswald, sa personnalité et comment il est devenu Le Corbeau et toute sa complexité. Au fur et à mesure on comprend toutes ses actions et rien n'est laissé au hasard, les personnages secondaires prennent une grande place également et j'ai également beaucoup aimé en savoir plus sur eux. Je ne vous cache pas que j'ai versé quelques larmes ( beaucoup en fait) à la fin. L'autrice nous donne une fin qui est cohérente avec l'histoire. Même si mon cœur d'artichaut aurait rêver d'autre chose, finalement, il ne pouvait y avoir meilleure fin que celle-ci. Trochę mnie tu nie było i biorąc pod uwagę, że normalnie dodaję posty nawet i codziennie, to ta trzytygodniowa przerwa wydaje się być naprawdę spora. Czemu? Bo w trakcie lektury każdy z nas może sobie pomarzyć o posiadaniu Księgi drzwi, za pomocą której można dostać się w każde miejsce na świecie - no, oczywiście o ile posiada ono drzwi, bo to właśnie przez nie trzeba przejść w ramach tej niezwykłej teleportacji. To chyba pierwsza historia, w której książki odgrywają kluczową rolę i serio mnie wciągnęła. Zazwyczaj - o dziwo - książkowe przygody mnie nudzą, chyba że mówimy o otulaczach, które ukazują ich magię, ale to inna kategoria. Tutaj działo się naprawdę sporo i to na ogromnej przestrzeni czasu. Historia wpadała lekko w klimaty serialu DARK, ale nie była aż tak mroczna, za to mocno pokręcona. Styl napisania tej książki skojarzył mi się z Addie Larue od Schwab, bije od niej melancholia, ale za to jest znacznie bardziej dynamiczna, więc jeśli czegoś zabrakło Wam u Addie, to w ,,Księdze drzwi" to znajdziecie. Bohaterowie rozwijają się z biegiem akcji, stopniowo dzieje się coraz więcej, pojawiają się nowe postacie, nowe sieci powiązań i ACH. Ta książka jest świetnie rozbudowana, doprecyzowana i zamknięta, a do tego potrafi zrobić sieczkę z mózgu. Bardzo usatysfakcjonowała mnie ta historia, wyczekuję dla niej nominacji do Najlepszego Fantasy Roku i BARDZO POLECAM! ✨Chystáte sa na Vlákna mágie?✨ Na Vlákna mágie som sa veľmi dlhú dobu tešila. Autorkine knihy s prímesou slovanskej mytológie ma vždy bavili a po Synovi podsvetia som vedela, že si prečítam čokoľvek. Príbeh sa točí okolo mladej Agáty a jej života v Líškove. Musím povedať, že z celej knihy išiel veľmi útulný vibe, akoby ste sa ocitli v Gilmore girls. Agáta je čarodejnica, ktorá sa snaží stráviť najlepší posledný rok vo svojom meste, kým odíde na výšku. No ako to už býva, stal sa presný opak. V príbehu nechýbala tajomná atmosféra prameniaca z nevysvetliteľných vrážd, nepodarené kúzlo a vyšetrovanie na vlastnú päsť. Veľmi som sa tešila na to, ako autorka spracuje tému čarodejníctva. Objavili sa tu staré známe víly a vďaka autorke budem už navždy hliadkovať v lese, či neuvidím kruhy z hríbov. 😁 Zabrdli sme aj do upírskej témy, čo len kvitujem. Jediná vec, čo ma na celom príbehu mrzí je, že tam toho nebolo viac. Naozaj by som sa rada dozvedela viac o Agatinych predkoch, o mágii, ako funguje, o Agatinej starkej, o Neveninej akadémii, o čarodejníctve ako takom a o stretnutí Agatinej rodiny a ich tradícii tancovania okolo vatry v lese. Na môj štýl v príbehu prevládalo viac toho racia a viac vecí zo skutočného sveta na úkor tých magických. Pokojne by som knihu prijala aj ďalších 200 strán dlhšiu, ak by tam boli tieto vyššie spomínané veci. Avšak podľa niektorých recenzií vidím, že 100 ľudí 100 chutí, a to čo chýbalo mne, niekto napr. vôbec nevnímal a bol spokojný. Aj napriek všetkému som knihu dočítala veľmi rýchlo, pretože štýl písania bol svižný a bola som veľmi zvedavá, kto sa ukrýva za vraždami, a veru som sa aj prekvapila. . I can’t imagine a better book on Stax has been written. This was a dream to read. My favourite record label given a full and thorough deep dive. I knew a bit coming in but learned so much throughout. Gordon brilliantly conjures a sense of time, place and of the people involved. The stories flow effortlessly and are told with real heart and feeling as befits this most family-run institution (initially at least). All the legends that rolled through Soulsville are here: Carla and Rufus Thomas, William Bell, Sam & Dave, David Porter, Isaac Hayes and of course the main man himself, Otis Redding. The section on his rise and tragic death is compelling and heartbreaking reading - the context of life at Stax after his passing is very moving indeed. That said this is one of the most enjoyable books I've read on music.
