I love a quiet book, that's introspective and looks at society and its constructs. I like surrealism, I.enjoy having to think critically to interpret meaning and intent. I like feeling like I've learned something, I love to feel strong emotion. I didn't really get this book! I think we were discussing: power in relationships, gender roles, generational wealth- all with themes of feminism and an undercurrent of motherhood. But, I didn't come away thinking aha, feeling changed, or feeling seen... I’ve noticed that, lately, I’ve been gravitating towards books tackling grief. It’s a subject that would historically make me panic and withdraw, seek less anxiety inducing topics. Things have changed, apparently - and whether it’s due to the nature of my own writing right now (loss and mourning being a big one in this context) or my sudden need to throw myself out of my comfort zone, here I am, approaching grief from so many different literary angles. 🌃Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas🌃 • The first time I read Hunter S Thompson’s “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” I was 15 years old and a freshman in high school. We had to do a biography project for my freshman English class and initially I had started reading a book about someone else, but I couldn’t get into it. So, I went to the library at my high school and found this book and I had already heard about it before. Plus, it was 2005 and Hunter Thompson had just died and had his ashes fired out of a cannon, so he was fresh on my mind. • However, I didn’t get my teacher’s permission to do this project on this book. I had to give a PowerPoint presentation about Hunter Thompson and the events of the memoir…so my classmates presented on Wayne Gretzky and Michelle Kwan, I got to enlighten my freshman English class on Hunter S. Thompson and his Vegas exploits, drugs and a hole lot of shenanigans. My teacher was not impressed. I got a C on the project. **Book Review** The Black Flamingo by Dean Atta This book explores so much, I almost wanted it to be two books since the novel covers the main character’s childhood to his college life. Like so many young people trying to figure out who they are in the context of multiracial and queer identities, it captures those inner and outer conflicts in a way that is tender and messy. Overall, I liked that various characters were not one dimensional. They were not perfect family members, friends or lovers, yet in living their various truths, one can relate to how difficult it is to just exist in the world. The book is written in verse, so even though it is a bigger book, it reads quickly. I already had in my classroom library, but now I can say more when I recommend. #currentreads ft stanley and my may book journal spread 🌸 Lonesome Dove - Larry McMurtry i’m not a huge western fan but i kept hearing great things about this novel so i wanted to give it a try! although i severely underestimated the length of this book because it’s over 900 pages 😬 So far the characters have been intriguing and McMurtrys writing really immerses you into their world. The Sun Also Rises - Ernest Hemingway i don’t know much about this book, but i know hemingway can be a difficult author; people seem to be divided with his writing style. I’m ust a few chapters into this one but there’s a lot of characters mentioned while keeping the dialogue fast paced, so it’ll be interesting to see how i end up liking it!

I saw this one all over Instagram last year but couldn't get around to reading it. Finally picked it up and I am glad I did. So far I have been really enjoying it. It is very honest and raw. ✨The Lady Waiting Magdalena Zyzak ⭐️⭐️💫 This book hooked me with an intriguing premise - a young Polish immigrant picks up a disheveled woman on the side of the road and is sucked into a world of erratic behavior, stolen masterpieces and half-baked heists. It seems like it would be a lot of fun, and parts were interesting, but the disconnect comes from characters who never feel real. I think its possible to portray eccentric characters and still have their oddities rooted in real life, but these characters felt like inventions in someone’s mind throughout. Even our protagonist, Viva, remained one-dimensional and wholly reactive until the final act - which was the most interesting part and was over far too soon. Thanks to @riverheadbooks for the #arc!
Current reads: First book - Return to Blood by Michael Bennett. The sequel to Better the Blood. This series follows Wāhine Māori detective Hana Westerman. I have nearly finished this book actually. I am finding it much more fast paced than the first book. Second Book - Kurangaituku by Whiti Hereaka. I am only 50 pages into reading this book and I am astounded by how Talented Whiti is. Every page feels like magic as I am transported into Whiti's story. I am enchanted by Whiti's talent and her writing skill is what I thought I had when I thought I was the next Rupi Kaur in my early Twenties 🤣

So. In April we read The Book of Love by Kelly Link for Feast+Fiction. It is 700+ pages long. Too long. Almost ruined me for other books forever. I read A Flicker in the Dark before that and had to Google the plot just now because The Book of Love gave me amnesia but also A flicker in the dark was decidedly average. Can I get a whoop whoop for Listen for the Lie though? I listened to the audiobook of this and thought it was funny and twisty and I really enjoyed it. I’ve just started the teacher because I need to read more quick trash in my recovery from the book of love.
Klasyka, której nie przeczytałam, już była – więc dzisiaj o książkach, o których tutaj nie napisałam, choć udało mi się je przeczytać (w przypadku „Dawno temu…” to naprawdę jest kategoria udało się, bo do dziś nie wiem, jak pokonałam tę cegłę). Sporo mam ostatnio takich książek, bo albo je czytam i zanim zdążę się obejrzeć, na karku czuję oddech bibliotecznej kolejki, albo po prostu nie czytam ich w ramach współprac, które traktuję przy publikowaniu priorytetowo, więc giną w czeluściach mojego regału i pamięci. O „Dawno temu w Warszawie” jest cały tekst na blogu; akurat średnio się w tej powieści odnalazłam, starałam się ją doczytać sprawnie (nie szło) i jakoś ją polubić (nie wyszło). Duże nadzieje wiążę z ekranizacją, bo chwilami trudno mi było wręcz nie pomyśleć, że część scen umieszczono tam dla celów innych niż ekranizacyjnie estetyczne. Podstawowy błąd popełniłam chyba, zakładając, że to będzie coś utrzymanego w dynamice, tempie i tonie „Ślepnąc od świateł”, a zdecydowanie takowym nie było 🤷🏻♀️. Mam też nadzieję, że uda mi się jeszcze napisać coś więcej o „Futerale. O urządzaniu mieszkań w PRL-u”, bo to blisko 600 stron naprawdę świetnie skonstruowanej opowieści o nas, o tym, jak drobne zmiany potrafią zdradzić pochodzenie i jak w domach przebija dziedzictwo minionych lat. A czytało się chyba też tak dobrze, bo dużo w tej książce Krakowa, zarówno tego staromiejskiego, jak i nowohuckiego, a folklor lokalny to potrafię wchłaniać w ilościach nieprzyzwoitych 💁🏻♀️. A main storyline with a few underlying ones really helped breakup the heaviness that a historical fiction book brings. It was surface heavy so I didn't feel like I needed to take a break from listening to it. The characters were distressed and less than perfect so the realism felt closer to real people as opposed to just being characters. I didn't connect to this book as closely as I thought I would or how other people did but I still think it's a great addition to my historical fiction collection. The audiobook was good, I think. Nothing spectacular but enough to allow you to escape. Can you read two historical fiction books in a row❓

Annihilation - Jeff Vandermeer ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ “What can you do when your five senses are not enough?” and finally, drumroll please, for one of two books that has broken my ages long slump. Annihilation was exactly what I needed to get me back into reading. Suspenseful, confusing, endlessly intriguing, with a world that makes you question EVERYTHING. Such an amazing book. It’s hard to write much without giving away the story, because everything is tied together so beautifully, so I really recommend this one. If you like sci-fi, suspense, a beautiful yet terrifying landscape, complex relationships and mental states, some body horror, and twists and turns that literally made me gasp in my seat, check it out. I already ordered the second book in this series, Authority. I can’t wait to check it out! I’m also reading Funny Story and Piranesi at the moment. All of my books are such different vibes lol
Currently reading 📖 I started this a day or two ago. I loved The Kingdom of the Wicked series and I am loving being back in that world.
