I have a dog named Gavin and a cat named Rhue and we live in Indianapolis. ✨this year, I’m focused on reading more poetry. ✨The Lady Waiting Magdalena Zyzak ⭐️⭐️💫 This book hooked me with an intriguing premise - a young Polish immigrant picks up a disheveled woman on the side of the road and is sucked into a world of erratic behavior, stolen masterpieces and half-baked heists. It seems like it would be a lot of fun, and parts were interesting, but the disconnect comes from characters who never feel real. I think its possible to portray eccentric characters and still have their oddities rooted in real life, but these characters felt like inventions in someone’s mind throughout. Even our protagonist, Viva, remained one-dimensional and wholly reactive until the final act - which was the most interesting part and was over far too soon. Thanks to @riverheadbooks for the #arc!

📚 Review - Listen for the Lie What a fun and entertaining read!! I’ve said before I’m always skeptical picking up super hyped thrillers, but my last few have been wins, so I’m on a roll!! Listen for the Lie is about Lucy who is notorious in her home town for being the prime suspect in her best friend’s murder. She has stayed away from that town for years and has kept her notoriety under wraps in her new life, however a podcast about the murder has become incredibly popular and people quickly figure out who she is. After being fired from her job and broken up with by her boyfriend, she finds herself heading back home for her Grandmother’s birthday. While there, she discovers the podcast host is also staying her in hometown while recording new episodes about the case. Lucy teams up with him (kind of) to figure out what happened the night her best friend was killed. The night she has no memory of. This book was so entertaining. I got the biggest kick out of Lucy and the dialogue actually made me laugh, which is rare. I read this book in a day, because I couldn’t put it down and needed to know how it ended. As much as I enjoyed the majority of it, there were a few things that I didn’t love. I really didn’t like the inner voice plot line and I really couldn’t buy into the reveal. But even with those negatives for me, overall I really liked it. I also really enjoyed podcast narrative. I thought it was a great use of this type of storytelling. Sometimes it feels like it’s just “there” and the author is trying to capitalize on the popularity of it, but this time it really was built in as part of the plot, and helped develop both the story and the characters. New book coming soon: Slow Dance, by @rainbowrowell and published by @williammorrowbooks Publication date: 7/23/24 My review: Slow Dance is a classic Rainbow Rowell treasure. She knows how to wrench my heart strings and make me root for the underdog—in this case, the elusive happy-ever-after that seems more common in fiction than reality. And the reality is what I love about her books and characters. Shiloh and Cary aren’t flawless beauties who are one miscommunication or one unconquerable roadblock away from wedded bliss. They’re messy. They’re average. They’re broken. They’re complicated. They’re human. They’re also best friends who’ve tried to be together but hurt each other instead, and have to put in real work to be ready for commitment. They’ve both been through hardship and will continue to face that hardship, even after the final pages of the books. But in spite of the conflict and pain, I couldn’t stop turning pages, because Ms. Rowell writes compelling scenes and vulnerable interactions. Her stories sweep me away from my own reality and immerse me in a new one. I did have to skip a chapter that was too open door for my comfort level, but I could understand how it was relevant to the plot and character development. I just prefer to stay out of other people’s bedrooms. If you’re a romance fan or a Rainbow Rowell fan, definitely give this book a go! 📚Book Review📚 - Restless Dolly Maunder by Kate Grenville This was a very quick and easy read from the Women’s Prize shortlist, that I thoroughly enjoyed. Dolly Maunder was born on a farm in Australia in 1881. She was the daughter of a sheep farmer and his wife and one of seven children. At the turn of the century, rules and laws are changing and Dolly got to go to school. This is where Dollys nature starts to show, she is determined not to have 5 same life of her parents. She wants more and in turn she wants to give her children more. She is incredibly driven. This is really a story about an inspirational woman, however the what makes it for me is how the author shows all of this but also shows Dolly’s flaws and the effects that her character has on her own children. The magic of this book, comes at the end when you get to the photograph and read the explanation. Grenville has used notes from her mother and childhood memories to create an interesting narrative about being a women in Australia from 1880 -1950. She pushed the boundaries and overcame so many obstacles and hardships. Have you read this? 💜 🔮BOOK REVIEW🔮 💜 ▪︎Every Wish Way by Shannon Bright ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ Iza's love life is a disaster. All she longs for it to find a nice dependable man to build future with so when insufferable Beckett appears in her living room claiming to be her personal wish-granter Iza wishes to find her dream book boyfriend. Transferred into a world with Mr Darcy, Iza thinks she's got the perfect man but could her heart be pulling in a different direction? ----- Okay so I fell in love with Beckett right from the moment he appeared on the page. He made one past mistake and is now forced to grant wishes for the rest of his life, sitting by watching everyone else be happy and not being allowed that for himself. Then in walks Iza who just wants to find the perfect man and judges Beckett quite harshly on first impressions which is unfair as he is funny and really sweet. I did enjoy getting to know them both though, plus the story is based around the plot of Pride and Prejudice which I loved as it also had some genuine laugh out loud moments included too. I also like the developments not only between Iza and Beckett but between Iza and her mother as she lived for her approval. It was great seeing her finally standing up for herself. The only thing I didn't like was the third half of the book, the whole going back in time to fix things kind of confused me as all she did was give her friend a list of what to do and left her too it. The characters were distressed and less than perfect so the realism felt closer to real people as opposed to just being characters. I didn't connect to this book as closely as I thought I would or how other people did but I still think it's a great addition to my historical fiction collection. The audiobook was good, I think. Nothing spectacular but enough to allow you to escape. Can you read two historical fiction books in a row❓

I have been hearing SO MUCH about ‘Every Time I Go on Vacation, Someone Dies.’ It wasn’t until I saw Elle Cosimano (one of my favorite authors) compare this book to ‘Knives Out’ (one of my favorite movies) that I knew I needed to read it too. ‘Every Time I Go on Vacation, Someone Dies’ follows a mystery writer named Eleanor who is on an international book tour in Italy. The last time she was here was a decade ago, where she fell in love with a man who was in the middle of solving a series of robberies and a murder. When Eleanor returned to the states, she wrote all about it and has since made herself into a successful mystery writer. However, after ten years, she’s tired of seeing her only success thanks to her now ex-boyfriend, so she decides to kill off his character in her upcoming book — but it appears that someone in the real world wants him dead too… Comedic mysteries are my absolute favorite genre, and while I’ve read many of them, this one was very unique. The author uses footnotes to help Eleanor (the narrator) break the fourth wall and to help us readers read between the lines (pun intended). I’m a big fan of writers who like to poke fun at themselves, and this addition was such a smart way to add comic relief to an otherwise grisly subject: murder. If you love mysteries like ‘Knives Out,’ the ‘Finlay Donovan’ series, and the Ernest Cunningham series (‘Everyone in My Family has Killed Someone’ and ‘Everyone on this Train is a Suspect’), you will enjoy all the twists, turns, and laughs in this book! (There are also a whole lot of Bridgerton and Taylor Swift references, if that’s your jam.) 🎧FUNNY STORY by Emily Henry I am not an Emily Henry super fan. And she and I got off to a terrible start when I read and strongly disliked BEACH READ in 2020. And yet….I have somehow read each subsequent book she’s published. And either she’s growing on me or my reading tastes have changed, because I now look forward to each year’s new release. I’ve come to think of her books as predictable and sometimes implausible, but (almost) always enjoyable escapism. This one has unseated BOOK LOVERS as my favourite of hers. It boasts likeable main characters thrown together by amusing forced proximity circumstances. The pacing is quick, the side characters entertaining (that step mother 😂) and the narrative unfolds in a way that is formulaic, but charming. I wish I could say I liked this one. It was fine, but I didn’t love it. I thought all Leigh Bardugo would be a hit with me, but alas. I suppose I’ll stick to the Hell Bent series. I forgot most of THE FAMILIAR after I shut the cover BUT it’s a historical fantasy- 16th century Madrid, Spain. Luiza is a scullery maid wildly gifted with magical abilities. Her ‘little miracles’ is discovered and she enters a tournament. Winning this tournament will help the kings army win? There’s a bit of a love story as well. It started to seem gross though as the book went on. Like, Luzia seemed very young/niave and (the love interest-magic mentor? ) Santángel was well, older? In my head he went from looking like Tyson Ritter to Uncle Fester. I did enjoy this quote though: “He was unusually tall, and the skin stretched tight over the sharp bones of his face. He looked at once beautiful and like he was dying, as if a sheet had been laid over a particularly handsome corpse.” I mean, hot right? When the book started, I liked it. It was like one long emo video from 2006. ALL VIBES. Buuuut then nothing happened, the excitement level dropped and I just didn’t care anymore. BUT WHAT A COOL COVER! THOUGHTS PLZ! 🖤🖤🖤

I really enjoyed the AT setting, the grumpy/sunshine trope, and all of the challenges that Natalie and Finn must overcome. This was such a fun romcom and I would love to see this as a movie. 🍎Happy Teacher Appreciation Week🍎 This morning, I had a student give me The One and Only Family by Katherine Applegate. This book was just released yesterday! To say I was shocked and excited would be an understatement, I was on the verge of crying happy tears in the hallway! We read “Ivan: The Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla” in class for a lesson a couple months ago. This is one of my favorite lessons to teach and of course the lesson typically veers off to more of an author spotlight and my love for Ivan, Bob and Ruby. Afterwards, most of my students are racing to the classroom library or the school library to check out The One and Only Ivan. They get really invested when they find out the person who started the petition to free Ivan was a girl their age! This year, during the lesson, I also told my students about the new book coming out in May and how excited I was. The fact that this student remembered me saying this made it all the more special. The Secret Life of a Lady By Darcy McGuire ⭐⭐⭐⭐ The description of this book caught my attention right away. I love a good, strong, fighting, female lead. Hannah (orphan daughter of a mistress) is a secret agent who works for the Queen, and Lieutenant Killian (a Duke) is an agent for the Prime Minister. Both are hunting the same killer, both are attracted to each other, and both don't want to admit it. As they start to cross each others path while investigating, their friends/mentors encourage them to seduce the other to keep them distracted. Both initially reject the idea, but attraction and admiration starts to build in them both. This was a cute historical romance that moves quickly and holds your attention. I am curious to see what happens to the characters in the next books, and to learn more about Millie, Ivy, Drake, and hopefully Philippa! A little over 600 pages in 24 hours. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Tropes to know - #friendstolovers, #hiddenidentities, #fatedmates, #betrayal, #forcedproximity This one sucked me in from the first, and never let me go. It contains all the things I love most about a romantasy - dual perspective, morally grey MMC, veiled and secret pasts, abilities to keep hidden and a “just complex enough” magic system and setting. I’m usually a girl that likes the characters to become an item sooner rather than later, especially when smut is on the table, but this one might have changed my mind. The characters acknowledge there is something between them, but that it would not be wise for them to pursue it and instead, form a true friendship with all the longing, tension, and depth that I crave! When it does arrive, them giving in to said temptation was VERY MUCH worth the wait. Along with a well-formed magic system and world, there was representation in this book from all sides, whether it be with the main characters or side characters that made them feel real. Speaking of side characters, I am really hoping we get more of them (maybe even their perspectives) in future books as I really enjoyed the snippets I got of them along the way. The story progressed at a perfect pace, never leaving me wanting or frustrated for “more”.
