☁️Book Review☁️ Thank you @berkleypub for the free copy! #Berkley #BerkleyPartner 📖The Hunter’s Daughter By Nicola Solvinic 📣Pub Date: May 14, 2024 Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ——— ▪️Read this if you like: ▫️psychological/crime mysteries ▫️ritualistic serial killers ▫️then/now timelines ——— 💭My Thoughts This book grabbed me right from the beginning, kicking off with some action and diving into the plot. There’s some then/now timeline changes throughout the book, and I loved getting the backstory on our MC Anna and finding out what happened to her, and seeing how it tied to the present timeline. The psychological aspects really messed with me, along with Anna being an unreliable narrator. I thought I for sure knew what the twist was going to be, but I ended up being completely surprised. This book was creepy, weird, and a little spooky, but not scary (which was ok with me - not all horror needs to be super scary). It wraps up pretty quickly and I maybe would’ve liked a little more there, but I did like how it ends. I think the crime, mystery, and thriller components were all well balanced, and I’m already interested in what this author writes next.

The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBride. I heard great things about this book from reliable sources, but I have to say that I didn't love it . It is very well written, though some of the words would definitely be censored if one were to read this in public . The story predominantly takes place in the 1930s in a small town, Chicken Hill outside of Reading Pennsylvania. The main characters belong to the poor Black community, as well as several Jewish families living in the area. The writing is extremely vibrant and descriptive, but much of it does nothing to move the story. And, much of the story was disturbing to me . Has anyone else read this ? A main storyline with a few underlying ones really helped breakup the heaviness that a historical fiction book brings. It was surface heavy so I didn't feel like I needed to take a break from listening to it. The characters were distressed and less than perfect so the realism felt closer to real people as opposed to just being characters. I didn't connect to this book as closely as I thought I would or how other people did but I still think it's a great addition to my historical fiction collection. The audiobook was good, I think. Nothing spectacular but enough to allow you to escape. Can you read two historical fiction books in a row❓

The Dictionary of Lost Words… I wanted to love this one so much. Something was just off for me, though. Maybe it’s one of those instances of reading the right book, but at the wrong time. It reminded me of Sinclair’s The Jungle; a book with an important story that’s told really beautifully but it’s just so sad, and the sadness is hard to get past. I loved the focus on the father/daughter relationship and the honest discussion of the suffragettes. Many people declare they would act in certain moments, but Esme’s hesitation seemed genuine and relatable. It also allowed for her to demonstrate how much she had grown by the end, no longer willing to quietly accept or hide away what she felt was important. It’s a book about providing a platform for women, all women, regardless of their station. If that seems up your alley, I would recommend it. Q Wat is jouw favoriete regio in Frankrijk? De Elzas, 1877. Enkele jaren na de hereniging tussen Franz en Irene. Na jaren van eenzaamheid en verlangen hebben Irene en Franz eindelijk elkaars liefde teruggevonden. Ze hebben een gelukkig huwelijk en de zaken op het wijngoed gaan haast beter dan ooit. Maar ook hier zijn sommige dingen te mooi om waar te zijn. Irene wil zich naast de zorg voor de kinderen nog nuttig maken voor anderen. Na een schokkende gebeurtenis is Irene gedrevener dan ooit. Ze is vastbesloten. Er moet dringend iets gedaan worden aan de zo goed als onbestaande rechten voor vrouwen. Ondertussen wil Franz zich voor de volgende verkiezingen voor de Rijksdag kandidaat stellen voor de autonomisten. Een geheimpje dat hij angstvallig tot op het laatste moment voor Irene wil verzwijgen. Maar zijn leugentjes in een huwelijk wel de beste manier om liefde te laten zegevieren. Zon over de heuvels is als derde deel van een serie niet alleenstaand te lezen. In dit derde deel van de Wijngaard-trilogie worden we ondergedompeld in de politieke situatie van de Elzas midden/einde 19de eeuw. Dit zwaar beladen politiek gegeven is redelijk dominerend in Zon over de heuvels en wist me ook enkele keren te storen. Toch horen deze conflicten wel thuis in het verhaal en in dit tijdsbeeld. De verhaallijn gaat in dit derde deel een beetje alle kanten uit. Ik had wat meer moeite om een hoofdverhaal in het grote geheel te ontdekken. Meerdere kleinere situaties werden aangehaald, verhaal rond gemaakt en mee verweven in het geheel. Dit uitte zich een enkele keer in herhalingen. Toch is het eindresultaat weer de moeite waard. Marie Lacrosse slaagde er weer in om op beeldende en rustige manier non-fictie mooi aan te vullen met fictie en de 19de eeuwse tijdsgeest correct en geloofwaardig weer te geven. Met Zon over de heuvels schreef Marie Lacrosse een mooi, afgerond einde van een nog mooiere trilogie.

Super recomendable, incluso para los que no sean muy aficionados a la novela gráfica. El hilo argumental está basado en hechos reales: la lucha de Pepica Celda para recuperar los restos de su padre José, fusilado en 1940 en Paterna junto con once presos más y enterrados en una fosa común. En medio de toda esta historia aparece un personaje clave, Leoncio Badía el sepulturero, que tendrá un papel determinante arriesgando su propia vida. Un imprescindible no solo por lo que cuenta, también por el respeto y la sensibilidad con la que lo hace. Dans la vie des pantins de T.J Klune "Les règles : Rester groupés ! Fuir s'il le faut. Ne pas traîner en route. Ne rien trépanner. Et surtout être courageux." J'ai adoré cette lecture 💚 J'ai retrouvé la patte de l'auteur que j'adore 😉 Au début je n'étais pas sûre de me lancer dans cette lecture: je n'aime vraiment pas Pinocchio mais je me suis pourquoi pas et j'ai dévoré cette histoire ! L'auteur a repris les codes de l'histoire comme des clins d'œil tout au long du livre et c'est super bien fait 😉 On ne va pas se cacher que TJ Klune a une façon incroyable de créer des personnages hyper attachants avec cette trope found family que j'adore. Ici on retrouve en plus un personnage qui a un humour noir et un sarcasme comme je les aime 😜 On y parle aussi de diversité, d'amour, de famille, de curiosité et de confiance en soi. L'auteur fait une vive critique de la société de manière générale passant par la religion, le manque de libre arbitre, la peur de voir surgir un monde trop lisse et sans saveur. Si vous lisez la note de fin, vous verrez même qu'il s'est autocensuré de peur de ne pas voir cette histoire sortir et c'est dingue de voir ça en 2024😕 L'amour ne peut-il pas être libre? This has all the makings for a great beach read (or a book to transport you to the summer). The Prince Edward Island setting was really fun, and I loved how so many elements of the area were included in the descriptions - both in the natural landscape and landmarks. The chemistry between Lucy and Felix was a little slow to start, but once we get into the past timelines, I loved seeing how that chemistry grew and changed over the years up to the current timeline. I also really loved seeing the friendship between Lucy and Bridget. Did I disagree with her actions at some points? Yes. But was this a realistic look at adult female friendship filled with depth and love? Also yes, and I was absolutely here for it. The way these two plots intertwined throughout the book was well executed, and made it easy to binge.

I absolutely loved Leif Enger's I Cheerfully Refused. I thought it would be tough to beat Peace Like a River, which I read last year, but I think this one topped it. ➡️ What have you read recently that lived up to the hype? What did I love? Rainy is a fantastic protagonist: from page one, we know that he's totally in love with his wife, devoting himself completely to their relationship (which sets up the rest of the novel beautifully). It features fantastic, postapocalyptic/dystopian world building that's *just* far enough in the future to give some perspective but is close enough to feel scary. There's a book (I Cheerfully Refuse) at its center. I love a book within a book. An amazing and precocious child does make an appearance. (No spoilers.) There's the perfect amount of fantasy (built onto the speculative realism of this bleak world). The villain is so discomfiting. GORGEOUS writing. So many emotional highs and lows. 🌼 Pretty Girls 🌼 I kept seeing this book recommended on a psychological thriller facebook group so I picked it up at the second hand bookshop. What the actual huckleberry?! It was gripping, it was suspenseful, it was a great game of cat and mouse but… honestly stomach turning. This book is soooo dark with a huge long list of trigger warnings. Do not read this if you’re not in possession of a strong stomach. That said, it was a great lens on victimhood, sisterhood and family trauma, I enjoyed the multiple POVs and was hooked from very early on.
