Two books on my tbr. One is a reread, the other a new addition to my bookshelf and soon tbr list. Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson is a book that I read in my late teens. Back then I was fascinated by this story and watched several film adaptations afterwards. There was one film in particular which captivated me. The 1996 film "Mary Reilly", a retelling of Stevenson's story. Later I found out that it was actually also based on another book written by Valerie Martin, which reimagined the original Jekyll and Hyde story. I've been meaning to read that ever since, but somehow it fell into oblivion over the years. It was only recently that I remembered the book, when Letty @cleoandbooks tagged me in a post which mentioned Mary Reilly. She named it one of her favourite reads this year, a book she never tires of rereading. This sounds promising! I'm excited to read this soon. I also want to reread Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for the year 1886, but that will take a while since I'm currently only at the year 1821. Book Review: Not in Love by @alihazelwood ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶🌶🌶 I've been a huge Ali Hazelwood fan for coming up on 3 years now and while I've loved all of her books, I was sure that nothing was going to top Love on the Brain for me. And I was correct...until now. Not in Love is raw and beautiful and absolutely perfect. Both Eli and Rue are a little broken in their own way but they fit together perfectly (I feel like I am saying perfect too much...sorry, not sorry). Their relationship development was a joy to read and while the conflict part was a little predictable, I still enjoyed the ride. The grand gesture at the end was one of my favourite parts but I am so, so glad that we get dual POV for this novel because Eli...sigh Eli...is just a dream. He falls hard and fast for Rue but this feels so far removed from instalove. Don't get me wrong, I love Rue too but there is just something about Eli that makes me swoon ever so slightly. Ok, swoon a lot really. I will give this all the stars and quite possibly the moon. I mostly watch horror movies, but I love Stephen’s Kings books (as I’m sure you all know if you’ve followed us for any amount of time). I have so many horror books on my want to read list that I hope to be able to read one day! The Nickel Boys - hard-hitting stories that centre around race. I like to read books focused on intersectionality and own voices. Little Fires Everywhere - stories that centre women, as well as exploring privilege and race. I know most of the authors listed here aren’t women but I love to read feminist works by female authors - books like Kim Jiyoung Born 1982 for example. Rainbow Milk - LGBTQIA+ stories, anything queer in any form I will be there. If it’s LGBT in any way I want to read it, whether it’s YA or adult fiction. I’d love recommendations for books with trans characters if anyone has any! 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈 The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle - translated fiction, I love to read books from Korea and Japan, but I will also read literature from all over the world! 🎭 this girl loves Shakespeare 🤍 I read my first Shakespeare when I was 15 or 16 I think. It was Hamlet back in high-school and I vividly remember how I refused to read a translation: armed with my old-school dictionary I read the original and my (un)healthy passion began. From then onwards I decided to read a Shakespeare play every year - so as not to run out of material too quickly - and as of today I've gotten through 7.5 plays, currently reading my 8th: Twelfth Night ☁️ My list (and personal ranking) features: 1. I just adore Hosseini’s writing and it’s one of the very few books that has ever made me cry. Not an easy read at ALL, and quite harrowing, but so so worth it because it’s the kind of book that stays with you forever⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 I lost my copy when my mum moved house but Jonny bought me this stunning hardback for Christmas last year, so I’m hoping to re-read and annotate it soon! I’d really love to get to And The Mountains Echoed first though! It’s time to say goodbye to the Neapolitan Novels 🥹. I feel a bit empty and melancholy writing this review. I feel like I’ve been lost in Elena’s thoughts for a long time. Elena’s and Lila’s relationship is as complex as ever in this final installment, and this one was by far the most intense and painful. Political and social movements are collapsing, the violence in the neighborhood is escalating, and we mourn several characters. 🇮🇹 Elena is now a successful author grappling with the demands of her career. She has separated from Pietro and returns to Naples with her two daughters. Reunited with Lila, who has become an influential businesswoman in the local community, Elena finds herself once again deeply entwined in her friend’s turbulent life. ✍🏼 We always used to see Nino idolised through Elena’s eyes, but for once we see him for what he truly is: the ghost of his father. It’s interesting to see her perception of him shift. 👨🏻⚖️ Her friendship with Lila continues to be tense. It’s like constantly walking on eggshells but not wanting to break their inseparable bond since childhood. Lila is cruel, but it’s impossible not to empathise with her due to the traumatic event that occurs. No spoilers (you know I hate reviews that contain spoilers!). The event deeply devastates her and impacts everyone around her. 🎀 A powerful conclusion to the series, ‘The Story of the Lost Child,’ offers a nuanced portrayal of the characters’ journey from childhood to old age and the enduring impact of their friendship on their lives. Their relationship remains a source of both comfort and rivalry. 👩🏼🤝👩🏻 Ferrante has my mind, heart, and soul. Her ability to carve so much emotional depth into her writing is nothing short of spectacular.
A man wakes up in a space ship with no memory of who he is and what he is doing there. As the memories return piece by piece he finds out what his mission is, and it's an exciting one indeed. La sua capacità di sdrammatizzare e fare ironia anche mettendo in scena personaggi sotto forma di animali e riuscire comunque a trasmettere dei messaggi importanti e di valore é sensazionale. Qui troviamo uno zerocalcare che deve fare i conti con il tempo che è passato, che non è più quell’adolescente e quel bambino di cui ha memoria ma è ormai adulto e come tutti gli adulti si ritrova a farsi quelle domande importanti, come “devo iniziare a mettere su famiglia?” “Devo recuperare il rapporto con mio padre prima che sia troppo tardi?”. Domande che sorgono come un pugno nello stomaco e che creano ansia e instabilità. Mi sono ritrovata molto in questo fumetto, ho riso tanto e versato anche qualche lacrima soprattutto alla fine. Uno dei messaggi qui importanti é che a volte non ci rendiamo conto, da figli, che anche i genitori hanno a che fare a volte con dei “demoni” e che non significa che non ci vogliano bene. Sicuramente i bambini hanno le loro paure e vorrebbero sentirsi sempre rassicurati dai propri adulti genitori, tuttavia anche per i genitori non è sempre così semplice affrontare la vita. Story about her mother, how she lived, how she adored and how she felt when her mother was suffering and when she died. Definitely a heartbreaking story to read but beautiful in the way how mother's daughter relationship and journey explained. A mother is a mother and nobody can take the place. Book is one part of the big memoir of the author, there are few other short books categories based on the different story just like this one. The tragic events that take place in Syria past and present in our real world portrayed in this book is simply riveting, horrific and haunting. I could not put this book down. Salama, a young pharmacist is helping the wounded at a hospital in Syria. She is witness to absolute devastation day in and day out and her emotions are taking a toll. She is seeing things, hearing things and going through things that are just heartbreaking. She meets Kenan and what a rock he is for her. Their decision of whether or not to flee Syria looms. It’s both dangerous to stay AND to leave! This was emotional, raw and even scary at times. This is a story that will be in my thoughts for a very long time. I won’t forget these characters and what they endured any time soon. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 easy stars. I can not recommend this book enough. Just wow. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🍋❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

However, to get to Baba Jaga and succeed in his mission, he may just have to team up with some of the 'monsters' he would normally be hunting We have Ala who carries a family curse and Niko who has his own family secrets to bear, and neither are human but may be what Dymitr needs For a novella, this story takes you on quite a journey in its less than 200 pages. I always find it a skill to get someone invested in a story and/or characters, and completely wrap it up in this length of book. This books leans heavily on Polish folklore and I really enjoyed seeing that in this urban fantasy setting -------------- A moment for the edges, endpapers and under jacket foiling... Having just seen that it’s World Bee Day, I couldn’t resist sharing The Beekeeper of Aleppo again. This was by far my top read of 2023, and I’m torn between wishing that I had read it sooner and being sad that I’ll never be able to read it again for the first time! It’s definitely one that I think I’ll re-visit in the future although it’s also one I’ll need to prepare myself for. This is such a beautiful, affecting book and it’s one that I’m sure is going to stick with me for a long time. It’s certainly a book that I believe people should read at least once. Διάβαζα και έσφιγγα τα δόντια μου !!! Τρόμαξα με το άρρωστο μυαλό των δεσμοφυλάκων!!! Ανατρίχιασα και έκλαψα για αυτές τις γυναίκες ….Έπιναν νερό από νερολακούβες, οι συνθήκες υγιεινής ήταν απαγορευτικές έως και ανύπαρκτες! Βιάζονταν , βασανίζονταν, κακοποιούνταν και πολλές εκτελούνταν από τους δεσμοφύλακές τους!!! Δεν έχω λόγια για το βιβλίο ίσως είναι το καλύτερο του βιβλίο από όλα γιατί ίσως να με αγγιξε βαθιά στην ψυχή! I couldn’t stay away from Everett for long. JAMES is, as anticipated, another masterpiece to add to his vast oeuvre (is he even capable of writing anything less?). Known for his enigmatic style, his more recent works have struck a unique balance between satire and philosophy, mischief and profundity. JAMES is a touch more sober along this scale but no less acute. In short, JAMES is a retelling of Twain’s classic THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN, and one that closely aligns with the original. Everett reframes the narrative from that of a young white boy, to his Black companion — a runaway slave — and it’s wonderfully illuminating. Jim, as a character, has always been reasonably intelligent and compassionate in the Twain original, while in Everett’s version, a subtle refinement renders James with a depth of intellect, a sharp wit, and a penchant for literature and language. The narrative that Everett crafts for James is one that subversively challenges ingrained racism and injustice; from the use of vernacular as a pretence for appearing dim-witted and non-confrontational, to disguising in blackface in order to pass as a white performer imitating the Black stereotype. It’s a sad, farcical world that James must survive in. Everett is known for his incisive brevity and it’s what makes JAMES both propulsive and affecting. His elevation of Twain’s Jim speaks multitudes to his admiration for the author, and it’s his distinct genre-defying style that also makes JAMES such an original. Just a little obsessed! 🫣 There are 37 novels (so far) in Christine Feehan’s ‘Carpathians’ series, plus several spin off novellas. As of an hour ago I have the first 35 novels, plus the “Scarletti” spin off novel, and two short story collections with her novellas. Here are the most recent acquisitions in my collection, with the sunset sky through the window. A 38th book will hopefully be published next year. As long as Christine Feehan is writing these novels, I’ll be reading them. 😁 It’s taken me almost 2 years so far to collect this back catalogue of novels, and I’m nowhere near reading all of them yet. These paranormal romance novels, mostly set in the Carpathian Mountains (hence the name), have rekindled my love of reading for fun. They offer a unique world-building take on Vampires, gothic romance, shapeshifters, werewolves, recovery from trauma, and the clash of modern ideals with old world customs. In later books it’s clear she’s done a lot of research on the different cultures that call the Carpathian Mountains home, which I think adds some great depth to the storytelling. A lot of the novels also have adventure, crime fiction, and mystery elements. (And they’re very spicy if that’s your thing!) 📕 I first encountered this series about a decade ago when one of them (‘Dark Lycan’) caught my eye on the library new arrivals shelf. I read it, completely out of order, but liked it all the same. I’m so glad I’ve rediscovered this series, because in a year marked by personal health struggles, they’ve been a welcome temporary escape from reality. 🧛🏼 I wrote an essay on Substack back in July 2023 about the joy of losing sleep because of reading Gothic novels, and how my experiences in a high-control community robbed me of that for a time. A book that holds a special place in your heart… I couldn’t possibly pick one, so had to choose these two books that I have read at least 5 times each over the years. Where the heart is by Billie Letts 🤍 This book was the first book I remember spending my own money on and it is still a favourite to this day. Heavily pregnant Novalee Nation is left stranded in a Walmart by her boyfriend. With no money and nowhere to go she hides out and lives in the Walmart, eventually giving birth there. This is such a heart breaking and heart warming story, all the beautiful people Novalee meets on her journey is probably where my “found family” love began. Also loved the movie 🤍 The Guardian by Nicholas Sparks 🤍 This is by far my favourite book by this author. When Julie becomes a widow, the last thing she’s expecting a few months later is one last gift from her late husband, an adorable puppy named Singer and the promised he’d always watch over her. Years later Julie is ready to risk her heart by opening up to someone, and is caught between a man she’s just met, Richard and her husbands best friend, Mike. This one has lots of twists and turns and is equally heartbreaking, romantic and frightening. What book holds a special place in your heart? Have you read either of these? 🚶♀️📚Anzacs and a knife. I was channelling my inner Athena preparing for Emily’s walking book club this month! . The Children’s Bach by Australian writer Helen Garner is slim but sharp. We had two great walks discussing this novel about the shattering of the domestic, and about finding a way through to the wild via music. . A real Vegemite book! Some loved it some hated it. Sunday Shelfie 📚📸 POV - you need to clean your house for guests, but you spend the entire weekend reorganising all your books before having a meltdown midway through because you realise you have no plan and nothing looks pretty and everything is now just in random piles everywhere so you just lie down and doom scroll with a cup of tea for a bit before managing to pull yourself together enough to FINALLY get everything back on the shelves. Anyway, I now have tbr shelves (first picture ), shelves for a few favourites (second and third picture), and a translated fiction shelf (not pictured because it's in the spare room/office and that's a whole other mess). Managed to claw back some small joy by placing a candle called 'old bookshops' and a fancy tea cup next to my copy of Good Omens because I thought Aziraphale would approve.
