Corduroy by Don Freeman was first published in 1968 and this is still a classic that I have shared with my own kiddo. I remember being little and my mother reading it to me. This is a sweet book about a bear looking for a lost button in a department store. Where I think this holds up through multiple generations is the very simple idea of a cute bear looking for something that is missing to make him perfect to be bought but he didn’t need it. I loved the way the book is told through letters written by Walton. Overall I enjoyed this book although I remember there were some parts that were a bit of a struggle to get through. Paradise Lost Diaries nº 12 And here it is, the final book of Paradise Lost. I finished it two weeks ago but I’m still thinking about it. In a way, this book taught me how to read (again) – perhaps for being the hardest I’ve ever read, and so different from anything else I’ve faced before. Milton is such a genius that I find it difficult to accept he was a real person haha Once his narration is over, the archangel Michael makes a final attempt at giving Adam contentment and to inspire obedience (Q1). The consolation is in line with the lesson given in Book XI: ‘To teach thee that God attributes to place | No sanctity’; Adam shouldn’t grieve the loss of Paradise since the best and truest Paradise is inside him – he can take Eden with him anywhere. But can he though? The loss of Eden is the cause of all our woe, as stated in the poem’s opening lines; it’s more than leaving a wonderful place, it means losing the blissful state of peaceful communion with God and his creation Adam and Eve’s grief expressed in the previous books is so profound that I cannot be convinced they are fine with a ‘Mind’s Paradise’. Besides mentions of freedom and hope, this is another association between fallen Adam and Satan: just as Satan said that ‘The mind is its own place, and can make a Heaven out of Hell’ so Adam must be content with the power of his imagination (or faith) and ‘out of evil seek to bring forth good’ The last four lines of the poem form a melancholy and quiet ending (Q2). At first, I was a bit underwhelmed. I expected a sublime grand finale, in the style of the poem’s astounding beginning. Then I reread it a couple of times and changed my mind. We are not in a divine environment anymore, and maybe the language is more ‘simple’ as a reflection of the realised fall. Well, all I know is Milton doesn’t do anything by chance Perhaps I’ve already thanked him too much, but I couldn’t end the PL Diaries without mentioning @adam.g.walker who is a wonderful teacher and was kind enough to create the best literary experience I’ve ever had (you can check the lectures on his YouTube channel). Also thank you to all the group members who made everything so fun!

(In my defense, it has been 20+ years.) (In my criticism, I forget books that I read a few months ago too. 🤦♀️) Several times recently I have commented on posts saying some version of "I read this book in high school, but I don’t remember much about it. Probably time for a reread!" It has felt like a refrain. 😬 How well do you remember books from your high school years? I mean, there are a few books I first read in high school and remember well because I have read them repeatedly since (Jane Austen books, Jane Eyre, Rebecca, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Sound and the Fury, etc.). But the books I only read one time? Nah. They’re gone, except for the vaguest of impressions - colors and vibes. Don’t ask me about the character names or plots.🤷♀️ I almost feel bad about counting them as "read books." On the other hand, in twenty years, when I have forgotten everything about Les Mis except for the pain of it, I am still going to want to count this sucker amongst my accomplishments. 😂 So anyways, here is a stack of books I read a long time ago and don’t remember. Book Recs! Here are two of my favorite coming of age stories, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and Tomorrow Will Be Better, both by Betty Smith. Both of these books are set in New York in the first half of the 20th century and have strong female characters who have to balance their expectations vs the realities of their lives. I rated both of them 5 stars and would happily read them again. reading hopefuls // Toni Morrison Iskra (@iskra_in_wonderland) posted a wonderful review of Sula by Toni Morrison recently, and it reminded me that I have these beautiful vintage classics editions of Beloved and The Bluest Eye on my upcoming hopefuls list. Toni Morrison is an author who I have always known to be a staple for any literature reader (which is why I have slowly been collecting her works), but she is one who I’ve never picked up in all my years of reading. The Bluest Eye is Morrison’s first novel, and it’s a critically acclaimed story of race, trauma, and oppression through eleven-year-old Pecola, who yearns for the blue eyes of the blonde young girls of 1940s America. I’ve been informed that this is a difficult but exceptionally rewarding read. Beloved, on the other hand, is a portrait of Sethe: a woman born into slavery and escaped to Ohio, who is plagued with the nightmares of her past and the ghosts of her dead baby, Beloved. This novel won the Pulitzer Prize in 1988. I am also lucky to have a copy of Sula (a story of two friends on different trajectories from small town Ohio), which has been lent to me by a friend. I recently (finally) read KINDRED for book club. Apparently everyone but me was assigned to read this book in middle school 😆 — were you as well? This is my first time reading Octavia Butler (I know) and I was a little surprised to find the reading level was a bit younger. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 I can’t believe I waited this long to read Pride and Prejudice!!! Well technically I listened to the audiobook, for which the narrator was amazing! I love all the adaptations but I was still surprised at how much I love the actual book! I think the thing that surprised me the most was how funny the book was! It was genuinely hilarious and not just Mr. Colin’s! One of my favourite moments is towards the beginning of the book when Mrs. Bennet is talking about the Lucas’ to Darcy and Bingley and calls them all ugly! Except for Charlotte who she calls the least ugly. Peak comedy. I was also shocked to realize just how quickly Mr. Darcy falls for Lizzy, like from their second meeting he is so down bad! It’s amazing. I also like how in the book he makes a purposeful effort to introduce Lizzy to his sister and have them like each other. The only very minor thing keeping me from giving this book 5 stars is that as soon as Lydia runs off with Wickham, I wanted Jane and Bingley and Lizzy and Darcy to get together asap! I wanted the happy ending that I knew was coming! But there was still quite a lot of time to get through which annoyed me a little lol cuz I was so impatient! I am definitely going to be listening to Emma next! I also really want to get this copy of P&P and the other Rifle Paper Co editions they’re so gorgeous! ✨Revisiting a childhood classic✨ “The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain. It’s the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared.“ When @seekingdystopia announced that the April SciFi Scaries pick was THE GIVER, I was so excited! I last read this book years and years ago—probably before high school—and remembered loving it so much as a kid. I also read GATHERING BLUE and MESSENGER, but this first book was always my favorite. And wow did it hold up! THE GIVER is a classic for a reason. It’s the blueprint for dystopian society, but it doesn’t try to do too much or give too many answers. It introduces the gray areas that we try to ignore in society while highlighting all we stand to lose if we think too black and white. Where other authors might have explained every nook and cranny of this world to their detriment, Lois Lowry gives us just enough to keep us interested and let our minds explore—in brilliant color. Speaking of color, the way Lowry gradually hints at and explains the lack of color in this world is so, so good. I remembered this detail from prior reads, but if THE GIVER was all new to me, I would have been shocked by the reveal because it’s laid out so cleverly. After I finished my reread, I immediately bought a box set of the series, including SON, which is new to me. 🎨🖼️What is your favorite painting? 🕊️I was really fortunate to have been able to see the special exhibition from the Ayala Museum of Juan Luna’s Hymen, oh Hyménée! last year. I visited the museum again with a friend a couple of weeks ago but the exhibit was unfortunately done at that point, but I did get some great prints and post cards of said painting! Luna was a Filipino artist and oft regarded as one of the national heroes. This particular painting was considered lost for a long period of time so it’s definitely great to see it in person, almost as if it was brought back to life. Luna was very much inspired by the Ancient Greek and Roman worlds, and this particular painting depicts a Roman wedding ritual. It’s very beautiful in person and I hope it can be displayed to the public again soon! 🐢

Decided 14th century monastery was the vibe I needed. Apparently the first 100 pages are a deliberate ‘penance’, but if you don’t mind skipping over the Latin and hoping the obscure conversations about 1300s religious controversies won’t become key to the plot it’s pretty readable so far…🌹
