Week 4: Whispered Legends 🐴🧚🏻♀️ This one is based on a local folklore from the South West of England, where I live. According to mythology, they are called Colt Pixie (or Colepixie), a “fairy” pony with shiny skin and pixie wings. There are not much information about them, but they seem to love luring people and other animals deep into the woods for unknown purposes. This is the last piece for the Fairy Folklore Challenge, I’m very glad that I was able to complete them all (although I was so so late 😆). As a Fairy Knight serving under Fairy Queen Morgan she was dubbed "Gawain", after the round table knight from the legends of King Arthur. Strong and strict yet polite and kind at heart, she's a noble knight who's not the talkative type of person. She falls in love easily but her love relationships never last long (due to her true nature), which earned her the name "Gawain of many lovers". Her true identity is Barghest, a fearsome fairy from British folklore that appears in shape of a large chained hellhound with burning eyes and horns. In folklore, Barghest is the omen and bringer of death. When the chained hound appears and her minions (in shape of pitch black dogs) march through the streets, somebody's death is assured. This also earned her the name "Black Dog Dutchess". Her motto is: The Strong devour the Weak. Bluebells caught on my way home. Bluebells are said to be associated with fairies, especially older woodlands where fairies were said to inhabit. The fairies would use the flowers for their goblets or hats and should anyone hear their tinkling, they would only be able to speak the truth! However, the tinkling of bluebells is also said to curse whoever hears them with a visitation from a bad fairy and death will follow shortly after their visit! If that wasn’t bad enough, there is also the belief that if you pick one, you will become pixie-led and be lost wandering forever! Although, in the Language of Flowers, bluebells represent “constancy”, which is nice as they always return every year. So, remember, you can admire the bluebell as they’re certainly pretty. But don’t EVER pick them and don’t hang around to listen to them…. Butterfly Pea Faerie Tea 🦋🧚♂️🫖 Butterfly Pea Flower is just so very magical! It is astounding how brilliantly blue the flowers can so easily turn the water in a cup of tea. It feels like a bit of faerie magic, for sure! When I was doing some research for the faerie + plant folklore book I am writing (!!), I came across a type of Eastern European faerie called Er Tütra, which means Morning Mist: the name for a type of weather spirit/faerie. These Morning Mist folk are only visible to human eyes in the form of their namesake natural phenomenon, but they are hard at work to promote the health and growth of crops—an invaluable service to the fauna and humans of the land. I made the connection between butterfly pea flower and these Morning Mist faeries because of the folklore surrounding this lovely plant. There are strong ties between butterfly pea flower in Southeast Asian cultures and motherhood and divine feminine symbolism, with a distinct focus on protection and mothering. The Er Tütra certainly perform this caretaking role for the land and crops. What’s more, there are very interesting studies on the use of butterfly pea flower in natural insecticides for crops! Embody the springtime Morning Mist with this tea blend and perhaps offer some to the Er Tütra for their aid in your spring garden. Per me 𝐀 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 è stato sia una conferma che una sorpresa, rivelandosi una delle letture più significative di questi mesi. Mi sento ancora persa tra quelle pagine 🤎 🕰️ Si tratta infatti di un dark academia caratterizzato da una forte impronta gotica, ricco di folklore e di amore per i libri. Effy non ha avuto scelta quando è stata ammessa ad architettura: alle donne non è permesso studiare letteratura all’Università di Llyr. Quando le si presenta l’occasione di curare il maniero lasciato da Emrys Myrddin, il suo scrittore preferito deceduto da poco, Effy arriva a Villa Hiraeth, ormai in procinto di affondare nel mare. Qui dovrà lavorare a stretto contatto con Preston Héloury, suo rivale accademico, per indagare sulla paternità delle opere dello scrittore. La verità celata dietro a diari, lettere, libri e segreti affondati nelle acque che stanno inghiottendo Villa Hiraeth potrebbe cambiare il mondo accademico e l’intera Llyr. 🌊 Un maniero in rovina, delle scogliere che sprofondano negli abissi, acque che divorano la pietra, storie e documenti che rischiano di essere perduti per sempre. Tutta Hiraeth è intrappolata, mentre il mare continua a divorare. È centrale il tema della 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐞: Effy convive da tutta la vita con la paura che il Re delle Fate torni a prenderla, si sente perennemente in fuga nel suo continuo tentativo di sopravvivere. La realtà le si presenta in modo diverso, nessuno le crede, la sua voce viene sempre zittita, uomini più potenti di lei decidono delle sue sorti. Shifting the narrative and presenting compelling evidence on what or who, exactly, may have addressed Joan of Arc under the so-called “Ladies’ Tree” (Arbre-aux-Dames) of Domrémy, we will drink deep from the miraculous waters of the “Well of the Thorn” shrouded in its shadow, and deliver thought-provoking insights, rigorously cross-examined with historical records, on Joan of Arc framed as potential “Fairy Saint” – investigating how, as modern practitioners, we may be able to see her as a venerable primogenitor of the French fairy resurgence or fairy reliance, and a common ancestor of the French fairy seers, teaching us something about the sovereignty of the land. A Trusty Steed Welsh legend says the fairies and elves of Wales used the Pembroke Welsh Corgi to pull fairy coaches, work fairy cattle, and serve as the steed for fairy warriors. If you look closely, even today, you can see the marks of the “fairy saddle” over the shoulders in the Pembroke's coat.
