What a fantastic weekend we had at ‘A Festival for Pagans and Witches’ held at the Heart of England centre in Meriden! My coven and I have our own marquee at this festival and attend every year. From there we share the magic and lore of Wales and our own magical practices with those who choose to come to us! This time we shared classes and workshops on fairies, cauldrons, magical prose and poetry, tasseomancy, Welsh Deities, and so much more! Magickal Women Conference 2024 speakers: Hayleigh Morrow Disability and Magic In this presentation Hayleigh discusses her personal journey as a disabled witch and demonstrates how disability needn’t be a barrier when practicing witchcraft. Over the course of two decades, Hayleigh has adapted her practices to accommodate her specific needs. With the rise of technology, it has become more feasible for witches to find alternative methods for their practice – iPhones can be turned into spell books, websites offer interactive tarot readings, social media is a hive for online covens. For disabled witches it is a perfect time to discuss how the magickal world can be made more accessible, and therefore more inclusive. Shifting the narrative and presenting compelling evidence on what or who, exactly, may have addressed Joan of Arc under the so-called “Ladies’ Tree” (Arbre-aux-Dames) of Domrémy, we will drink deep from the miraculous waters of the “Well of the Thorn” shrouded in its shadow, and deliver thought-provoking insights, rigorously cross-examined with historical records, on Joan of Arc framed as potential “Fairy Saint” – investigating how, as modern practitioners, we may be able to see her as a venerable primogenitor of the French fairy resurgence or fairy reliance, and a common ancestor of the French fairy seers, teaching us something about the sovereignty of the land. Laity Magic Hath Ravished Me: A Ritual About the Drama of Ritual This is a ritual about the drama of ritual, exploring the pieces of the process as well as their deeper meanings. Euclid considered the circle perfection: before him the Egyptians figured out how to find the area of a circle—the elusive p we know so well now—and before that they figured in petroglyphs and stone circles. In this workshop participants will explore the use and history of the five components of the basic ritual—the enclosing circle and the four elements—as a method for raising power. Next, we will examine what we can ethically do with the power raised. Using the dramatic stories informed by the medieval Dutch play, Marike van Nieumeghen, as well as Marlowe’s Faustus, we will explore how raising power works best as a community resource (even for a solitary practitioner) and how nothing comes out of nothing, but what we give away is precious. From this workshop, people will come away with a deeper appreciation for the elements that make up ritual as well as the power of the drama of ritual, and feel a greater need to channel power to community. Animism has become one of the dominant philosophies within the pagan pathways, indicating a return to a more indigenous and nature-centred belief system. Magickal Women Conference 2024 speakers: Elisabeth Brooke Magical Herbalism: A Workshop Magical Herbalism was developed by Elisabeth in the 1980s as a newly qualified herbalist who decided one day to ‘tune into’ plants in a deep way. She has run these workshops worldwide since then and written about them in A Woman’s Herbal (Women’s Press 1992, Aeon Books 2019). Many people write about herbs for magic but often these are just lists of plants and their correspondences. Elizabeth believes what is important is a woman’s personal experience of the plants which can be obtained through deep meditation. In this workshop, participants learn how to tune in psychically and develop a deep relationship with a magical plant, discovering its magical, psychic, emotional and physical nature. Working in this way allows us to contact the Spirit of the Plant to ask questions and be given guidance and a gift to bring back from the meditation. No experience needed. Magickal Women Conference 2024 speakers: Melinda Reidinger The White Deer: Ecospirituality & the Mythic When the white deer appears, it reminds us that we have confined ourselves inside stories that are too limiting and that we are over-taxing our ecosystem. This can be observed at the level of deer population genetics: for instance, roads, walls, and settlements can block gene flows, causing related animals to breed and express their recessive genes (e.g. leucism). Turning to the narrative and mythopoetic, traditional tales about white deer have much to say about balancing ecology and gender relations, as well as figuring in reflections on sovereignty, violence, and healing – themes that still resonate powerfully today. I propose that softening boundaries and becoming receptive to a living world where humans and other beings appear as a result of specific conditions and communicate through symbols and subtle messages is the way we may all help to heal the wasteland and bring it back to flourishing. Magickal Women Conference 2024 speakers: Maria Hummer Using Folklore and Magic to Inspire Creative Writing. Maria will lead a creative writing workshop where participants will each receive a random folk legend, practice, or belief, and will be guided to create an original short story inspired by this. The workshop will contain a number of guided writing exercises designed to help participants create characters, generate story-rich situations, and creatively explore how folklore can and does resonate in our everyday lives. At the end of the workshop, you will have a solid idea (or perhaps even a rough first draft) that you can take with you and refine, if you wish to do so. You will also have a keen understanding of how to draw from legends and folklore to inspire future writing. No previous creative writing or folklore experience is necessary, just bring a notebook and pen, or a tablet/computer. Occult art, objects and artifacts made with the intention of connecting with the liminal (as well as for other magical or spiritual applications) have appeared historically in varied forms including talismans, charms and amulets, ritual costume, apotropaic mark making, and spirit paintings. Many places in the world memorialize witch trials through sculptures, shops, and lore. Kristiansand in Norway does not. Despite its violent history of witch-burnings, little attention has been given and no official place of remembrance exists. Why? The talk is based on an ongoing research project that seeks to examine the archetype of the witch and the presence (or lack thereof) of memorials in Norway. I hope to offer a window into the alternative histories of witch hunts in Norway, and how the lack of memorialization may continue to spell trouble for those living on the outskirts of Scandi-coziness today. I was nervous and so excited, and he was so friendly 😍😍😍 There were up to five talks/workshops per hour during the day and an amazing market. From 6:45 pm the bands started playing and later on a DJ. What a lovely day with my pagan Londoner friends and my fellow academic, Angela Puca. In the last video, you can see crazy Christians trying to disturb the event. As you might know from these kind of people, they were screaming violently with megaphones. Her teachings are couched in a firm historical and linguistic framework, with respect to the original context of the teachings, but never loses sight of the living traditions of these teachings which can be explored through direct application to their spiritual sources. With her partner, John Matthews, and with Felicity Wombwell, she is co-founder of The Foundation for Inspirational and Oracular Studies, which is dedicated to the sacred arts that remain often without record or witness. Caitlín has a shamanic practice in Oxford dedicated to addressing soul sickness and ancestral fragmentation, as well as helping clients find vocational and spiritual direction. MAGICKAL WOMEN CONFERENCE 2024: Artist in Residence Charlotte Rodgers is an artist and author who is also an animist and nondenominational practising witch and magickian. She conceived and co-edited A Contemporary Western Book of the Dead and wrote The Bloody Sacrifice and P is for Prostitution, all published by Mandrake of Oxford. Charlotte has had her work published in magazines including The Cauldron, The Oracle and SilkMilk, FOLKWITCH, and The Pomegranate: The International Journal of Pagan Studies as well as in anthologies published by Avalonia, Scarlet Imprint and Fenris Wolf. In 2017 she was awarded an a-n arts Council grant to spend ten days investigating and blogging about the New York art world and a filmed exhibition of her work was made for CRASSH (Cambridge University Centre of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities) Magic and Ecology Symposium 2021-2022. Charlotte’s art has been exhibited widely throughout the UK, and her sculptures are now on permanent display at the Museum of Naive and Marginal Art in Serbia.
