I never met my father-in-law. Though my husband and I dated in jr.high school, my father had two feet firmly planted in the “if that boy likes you he’ll find a way to come see you” camp. *sigh* Boomers. So my husband would hop on his pedal bike and ride the few miles to my house. The relationship was short-lived, even for a middle school romance. By the time we got back together 7 years later, Tom’s dad had already been an ancestor for a couple of years. I got to know him through photos and stories. So many stories, all of them hilarious and so very Irish. Not only have I never met my father-in-law, I also haven’t met a single one of my husband’s paternal extended family. When Joe died, so did the connection to the O’Neachtain branch of the family tree. Unfortunately, it’s taken the death of another member of the first generation of American O’Neachtain’s to interrupt that story. Tonight we say goodbye to yet another man I never knew, one that only lives in my husband’s childhood memories. For the first time in over 20 years, my husband will reunite with his paternal line. For the first time ever I will introduce myself as “Joe’s daughter-in-law” an identity that has always existed in theory, but will finally be embodied. When I began this journey, I had a vision of healing very specific rifts in my family tree. The thing about ancestral work is that it leads you to places you never expected to go. It reveals pieces of you that feel missing or incomplete. It restores a sense of belonging and a feeling of being known. A piece of me is healing that I didn’t even realize was wounded. “Joe’s daughter-in-law” I feel so proud.

I have been wanting to do this for YEARS. I suddenly felt inspired last night to try out an idea I had years ago. Sigil pendants. Of course, the inspiration would hit at midnight on a New Moon, so I was out at my work table with a flashlight on a stand because there was literally no moonlight to see by. 😂 This sigil is one I made last year, for enhanced ancestor communication. I have used it on spell bottles and in other ways and sometimes it feels like my ancestors have so much to share with me 🖤✨ This sigil is special to me so of course I wanted to use it as my first experimental piece. She would always get excited to smell the lilacs because that meant that winter was over and spring was finally here. As a person of mixed ancestry I understand what makes it difficult for so many of us to connect. There’s so much pain, violence, and shame attached to the people of our past. 🕯️I remember being afraid of them because I am Queer and didn’t think they’d like that. 🕯️Because I am mixed and didn’t want the Black and Indigenous people to hate me because I am European, or to endure racism from the Europeans because I am Black. 🕯️I also have issues with my living family and just thought the ancestors would be the same. But thru my ancestor practice I have connected with the ancestors who see me and love me for who I am. I have found a way to relate to my living family to heal and move forward. I have connected to people who are not related to me by blood but are part of my spiritual lineage and that was a HUGE gift. It helped me remember more of who I am and what I’m here for. In a session with me, you probably won’t meet your grandpa or your cousin or even your great great grandmother. But you very well meet someone much older, who is not on your family tree, who was removed from record. Or who knows your spirit and needs to connect you to the deeper truth of you. But they are all your ancestors and it is all in love. I have been blessed with the privilege to explore my ancestral heritage in the UK cultivating a deeper understanding of my Scottish Ancestral Heritage. They immigrated from around Edinburgh to Canada into Michigan. I have ancestors from Germany and Hungary and Czechoslovakia…I know my family line from the Hungarian side. No doubt there was much struggle and suffering that I know was passed down to my parents of immigrants as so many of us have come from in our families. It’s been a lot of work on my part to explore and to step into the trauma that was passed down. No doubt there were happy times, but there was always an underlying simmering unspoken pain that existed from all sides from both my parents. This work has been difficult and rewarding in its own right. I chose to do it on my own, in my own time, and from my own experiences within my family and according to the ancestral grief that has been held through generations and unspoken. I grew up in a family that we “buckle up” and “deal” with what is before us and power on…coming from European stock, that was what was expected. Being a gay man, I decided to change that narrative and honor and hold space for the challenges and difficulties that both sides of my family experienced in finding their way in a new way and in a new country. I chose to honor and be with all that has come before me and my family. Day of the Dead Celebrations and building altars to honor them has been a huge healing journey for me in my relationships with my ancestors living here in Mexico. Trees were sacred to our forest dwelling European indigenous ancestors. The indigenous germanic/celtic and nordic folk needed to build no temples; they found the presence of the sacred in the beech groves. Here they heard the voice of the gods and goddesses, the ancestors and the spirits of the land. Every homestead had a family tree and every village a “Tanzlinde” - a linden tree where the annual quarter and cross quarter festivities were celebrated. Our ancient ancestors knew the trees as gateways to the Otherworlds, both sky world and the underworld. For them, Yggdrasil, sacred tree of life and the 9 worlds, was the center of the universe. Yggdrasil has 3 planes - crown, trunk and roots. Each of these is fed by a well. We can see in these 3 planes as reflections of our own centers of awareness. Head, Heart and Pelvic centers = Crown, Trunk and Root. Each has its own portal or well. So when we sink into our Pelvic center at this Full Moon in Scorpio, we are sinking into the Roots of Yggdrasil and can enter our own underworld. The Pelvic center is the space in your body spanning from your navel to your perineum and is the seat of your deepest, most primal emotions. It is the home of your portal to and the well from which you are nourished by the divine creative force of the universe. Some call this force primordial consciousness, some call it the divine feminine. It is also the center from where we access the memories and wisdom of our ancestors. It is the hearth that holds our earth fire and gives us safety, security, belonging and the power to create. Here, we can access bone deep wisdom, see the beauty in the darkness of night and feel the earth goddess moving in us. Each month as the moon travels through her different phases the forces of gravity affect different parts of our body. You know that saying “when life comes full circle”? Well, I would tweak it a bit and say life when done right is more like an upward spiral. Picture the ammonite and its beautiful spiral design. Instead of being right where you started, it’s a continuous upward energy, it’s your evolution, your leveling up. This week for me I had that realization with a mentor of mine. The last we spoke was in March 2021, when all hell broke loose in my life. When I chose to dive with all of my being into the 9th layer of Dante’s Inferno or at least that’s what it felt like. If you are healing generational trauma remember that every level of pain you let yourself feel is a pain that previous generations weren’t able to feel and future generations will no longer need to feel. I took this picture after our call as a reminder. My ancestors have been celebrating. Heavy is the journey of the cycle breaker but what a gift it is as well. The Gallae’s tools of the trade 🏳️⚧️❣️ Pictured above is a Roman relief depicting the dress and tools of the trade of the Gallae of Rome. We will continue breaking down this relief, a treasure trove of information on the Gallae, but we’re beginning with the material items used in Kybele’s temple. The tools of the trade depicted above include: - Cymbals, tympanon, and double Phrygian flute: These instruments were used to create the loud, joyous music characteristic of Kybele’s temple and worship - Aspergillum: This tool is used for sprinkling cleansing waters for ritual purification. The Gallae’s aspergillum is made of leafy herbal branches that hold water well for sprinkling purposes - Cult items purse: This purse was used to hold and carry the material goods of their temple in style. It was cylindrical, with a cone-shaped cape, braided details, and a carrying strap - Offering bowl: In one hand, the priestex holds a bowl of offerings. The majority of these are almonds, which are an important symbol in the myths of Kybele and Attis, her consort. Closer inspection shows what seems to be a pinecone sitting in the back of the bowl as well. We consider this to represent the use of pine nuts as an offering, as pine trees are a central symbol of Kybele’s - Knuckle bone flogger: This flogger is made of strands of knuckle bones attached to a handle for self-flagellation. The Gallae had complex practices involving voluntary applications of pain for ritual purposes, including purification through the release of pain.
