So, today and yesterday I was supposed to complete some clients + supervision notes, clear my email backlog and prep for the viva exam I have tomorrow. Instead I spent the whole time gardening, and this morning, while I was having my coffee, I decided it was time to plant the potatoes. (In all fairness, I asked Ash the neighbors' cat for his opinion on the matter and he blinked, which I took to signify "yes". He didn't help me though. He just went upstairs for a nap. Maybe he'd said yes because he wanted the bed for himself) What does that say about me - beside the fact that I'm very good at finding seemingly respectable excuses for procrastinating? Probably a lot. My mum says that in this (the love for gardening, not procrastination) I'm a lot like my nonna, my maternal grandmother. She's not wrong - although nonna, a farmer turned factory worker and then trade unionist after WWII - was better at it. Mine is more the "plant and forget" gardening style. But I often wonder whether this profound love that I feel for everything green and growing is also part of the heritage from my paternal line. We know very little about that side of the family, other than they supposedly came from Scotland, and resettled in Manchester. My great-great grandfather and his brother had a hardware store in Hulme (yes, they were "in trade"! Deal with it, posh people. Lol), while their own father was a Baptist pastor. So where does this come from? I'm wondering if their ancestors were also farmers, maybe farmers that were driven away from their land during the enclosures period. I don't know but it seems likely.
