Ancestor work is remembering the small things that those who have passed enjoyed while they were living. Lilacs hold a special place in my heart because they were something my mother loved. She would always get excited to smell the lilacs because that meant that winter was over and spring was finally here. So, whenever I see or smell lilacs I am reminded of her, and make certain that I place some fresh lilacs on my ancestor altar for her to enjoy. It’s been a slow day today and I had time on my hands so decided to do some baking🧈👩🏻🍳🍰🧁. It’s not my strongest point in life is baking but it’s something I’d like to better at least! And today I’ve made this school cake… I remember having this at school and it was amazing so I’ve wanted to recreate it for a while! Here’s a closeup of my favorite Malabar spinach. It has these thick juicy stalks and pretty little asparagusish/broccoliish flowers and not a trace of oxalates. It’s really delicious and I’ve only found it at our Saturday Farmers’ Market. I’m going to miss it once the season is over. Speaking of oxalates, I’ve noticed that the last few times I’ve been to the doctor I’ve needed to share some nutrition knowledge with them. I’ve been told to eat more spinach to cure skin issues and I’ve gently shared that the oxalates in spinach make many skin issues worse and so other greens are preferable. Just yesterday I went to another doctor who told me to take D3. I told her I’ve been on 5000 I.u. Since 2004 and she was then alarmed and told me we needed to check that my D3 level wasn’t too high because I might get kidney stones. I set her mind at ease by explaining I do get my levels checked every 6 months and in the meantime I also take K2 which directs the calcium retained to bones and teeth instead of kidney stones and bone spurs. She then told me I should aim for a level of about 50 for vitamin D, so I had to explain that 50 is adequate for most people, but for MS we want a more optimal level of more than 80, protected by K2 of course. I’m not trying to be a jerk. I know doctors have been to school for a long time and have credentials. As promised, this is the adult, I believe, of the white Flatidae nymph on the cotton plant (IGTV) ~ took me about 1/2 hr to find Siphanta ?nubecula & then only because I was looking for that distinct broad triangular shape ~ see their mastery of camouflage & cryptic nature, planthoppers are notoriously under studied as they are hemimetabolous (adults & nymphs look nothing alike) & require rearing from a host plant. All Flatidae are phloem feeders with about 1000 species known worldwide ~ females produce white, fluffy wax to protect their eggs & also the emerged nymphs for concealment against predators When I see an insect, plant or animal, I don't immediately think it's some kind of message for me, I try not to be a self obsessed human, as all life on earth has its own path to walk, fly, crawl, swim 💚 yet, if I sense it & dream, think about it after, I look further for their nudge nod ~ Hemiptera (true bugs), the order these guys belong to are my least favourite insect group, yet, I feel akin to Siphanta lately ~ I too have no need or interest to be seen or heard, just laying low for now & connecting to my life & surroundings 🌏

When you spend so much time on social media platforms like Instagram, it can be so easy to make yourself feel like you're not good enough or you're not doing enough within your craft, pressuring yourself into spinning multiple plates of skills you tell yourself you should be good at; divination, deity work, astrology, energy work, spell bottles, reiki, extensive knowledge on crystals and herbs etc etc. Especially when you follow so many gorgeous, talented inspiring witches! I'll admit it's got to me the last few weeks and made me feel as though I'm not witchy enough and I've taken a step back. I still do my morning ritual, I still meditate of an evening and will do a ritual or a spell when I feel called to do so. But for the most part I've been researching and reading a lot about what it is I actually enjoy about witchcraft, what elements empower me and elevate my craft, not forcing myself to do what I think I should be doing to be a 'real witch' and I'm really enjoying re-discovering those things now I have a bit more knowledge under my belt. Basically this rant is to remind you if you feel this way, your craft isn't linear. It's whatever you want it to be and you can take as make steps forwards and backwards as you need to make sure your craft is yours and that the reasons you're doing it are the same reasons you started. Just finished tidying up and re-setting my Cailleach altar. The Cailleach is my matron goddess, and you will see on her altar some raven feathers and a piece of driftwood, a little shell, pebble and sea glass creation I made for her, a tumbler with whisky and an offering bowl that currently holds the last hellebore flowers from the end of winter. You will also see my new blue glass jar which I have filled with pebbles and shells which are sacred to her. That gets us over the line from time to time, for sure, but casting magic well requires dedication to learning, growth, practice and experimentation. So you can go back and look at your journey. It doesn't need to be fancy, mine is currently a simple notebook, and it works a treat!) I think the fact that our magic morphs and changes *with us* is what makes it such a beautiful path. I love that we are able inject so much of ourselves into each magical process. With the lines between magical practice and spirituality being pretty blurred, this level of individuality is quite a unique aspect of witchery when we consider how other spiritual systems operate. That's what makes the learning process so involved! Magic requires that you learn YOURSELF... and that is something that takes tremendous courage, resilience, determination and patience. Anyone can practice magic. There are those with natural talent, but anyone can get really good at it too, but most people have no desire to put in the time or effort! My morning ritual includes lighting a candle and listening to a song when I go to log into work each day. One of the projects I decided to do during this sheltering time was to replace my buttons on my winter coat. I only had like 2 left. And it felt like a good time to order some buttons from a small business and refresh the coat/strengthen it to keep me warm & safe. So the black plastic buttons have been replaced with brass lions heads. Hells yeah. The buttons came in the cutest cardboard package made from a larger box. (didn't get a good pic but super cute) Looking pretty spiffy if I do say so myself. The thing I learned from somewhere, is that you don't actually want to sew your buttons on as tight as you can (which is most folks instinct). The tension of the thread, the pull of the coat, and the material of the button can cause the button, fabric, or thread to break if it is too tight. You want to sew it on with sturdy thread and some slack to be able to weather the use. Kinda like humans. You don't want too much tension or it can make you break faster. Wisdom from handicrafts. Ginger (Zingiber officinale) Family: Zingiberaceae (Ginger Family) Planets: Mars, Sun Sign: Aries (2nd Decan) I’m continuously in denial about the lack of daylight this time of the year. So much so that I’m being pulled to write, and consume a lot of fiery spices. (See Black Pepper’s blog post last week). This week we have the bright and warming ginger. Ginger is most commonly found as the fresh root or dried and ground root though the grassy leaves are also edible (though rarely found in American supermarkets). Cultivated and tradered since ancient times in the islands of Southeast Asia, it has been used by people all over the world for millina. Medicinally, Ginger has been used to treat nausea or upset stomachs. My favorite way to use ginger this way is by eating the candied roots. The good stuff is quite spicy. A tea of fresh sliced roots (or dried is good too) is also a fine way to use ginger medicinally. Magically, I like to use ginger to add brightness, heat, and intensity to magical operations. The second talisman of Mars is good inspiration for using this herb as it is for success in health and healing. I credit these 4 amazing oils for my happy little baby boy. Gentle baby is an amazing oil to help soothe him when he is fussy, I diluted it and put a roller top on it, so it’s readily accessible for when i need it. I apply it to his chest, wrists and bottom of his feet. I have been putting thieves (diluted) on the bottoms of his feet since the day he was born. Yea, he got pneumonia but, I credit this oil to him not getting a whole lot worse (which could of happen in such a young baby) and praise the lord he’s on the mend! I love peppermint oil rubbed on his tummy for any gas issues he may encounter.
