Part 1 - Princess Ronkonkoma, was an Long Island Indian princess who died at the lake with her name in the mid-1600s. One story is that she was walking across the ice one winter when she met and fell in love with an English woodcutter named Hugh Birdsall, who lived across the lake, but their union was forbidden by her father. Every night, they would sneak out to send messages of love to one another. Ronkonkoma would paddle her canoe out to the middle of the lake, where she would then float a message the rest of the way to her lover waiting on the opposite shore. This continued for years, until one day the princess was unable to deal with this arrangement and snapped. She sent a final farewell note to her lover. He received it on the shore and minutes later, the canoe washed up in front of him as well. Inside it was the princess’s body––she had committed suicide in the middle of the lake. He too committed suicide out of anguish over the death of his one true love. Since that day, Ronkonkoma has haunted the lake, becoming known to many as the "Lady of the Lake". Angered because she wasn’t allowed to love in her lifetime, she now drags one young man into the lake each year. Which means that I do too. I enjoy that part of me quite a bit and hope that it shows through in my artwork. And for those who compliment my skin or skin tone, this would be why. I often wonder if that part of me is why I love dancing so much. I read a lot about the culture and enjoy following Native American artists, food places, and designers online. I think it’s pretty cool to be a part of such a unique and very small part of the population. All that being said, dancing allows me to express who I am, what I think about, what I feel, etc with my entire being and body. It’s powerful. It’s freeing and freedom all at one time. Day 26 of #30daysofgenealogy Recent Discovery.... A few months ago I was asked by a friend to try and figure out who the people were in her old family album. I came across this lovely photo of a lady with her grandson. Her name is Emily Greenslade and she was born in 1826 in Hastings. The little boy is William Harold, affectionately called Bill. This photo was taken around 1904 and Emily passed away not long after it was taken in 1905. Congratulations to Lan!! I found her father in 2022. He had sadly passed away. So we reached out to her siblings with no response. UNTIL…recently, Lan tried reaching out to her sister again and her sister checked her messages!! After 2 years of fearing she would never make contact with her siblings, they finally met each other and boy do they look alike!!! I have been organizing items that will go to Garrett after I kick the bucket. These items are directly related to him via bloodline. A long, very delicate portion of his great grandmother’s (my dad’s mom) wedding veil from 1929 along with their framed wedding day portrait. The wedding album from when his dad and I got married, my high school diploma, my baby clothes, my dad’s head shot when he was in Hollywood from the ‘50s. You get the idea. I also have some really beautiful pieces of jewelry that I have received over the years. But the crown jewel is this 1897 gold piece that was given to my grandmother (G’s great grandmother-the same woman whose wedding veil I have)that is mounted as necklace. It has the original chain and it is far too delicate to hold the weight of the coin. I tried wearing it once and was so worried the chain would break that I’ve never worn it since. There are two of these coins in our immediate family. The necklace was a gift to my grandmother and then my dad had it. Here's the final image from my great-grandparents' trip to Canada in the early 1950s featuring Horseshoe Falls, the largest of the three waterfalls that make up Niagara Falls. This photo was among the most damaged (did it go over the falls?) and needed a lot of work in removing stains, scratches, and dust. I figured I might as well go all out in my restoration by incorporating a little AI to help bring out details. I finished it with some colorization. I once visited this spot in the 1990s but I don't have any photos so hopefully I'll make it out to Niagara one day to get my own shots... (I was 🤏 this close to going for the eclipse.)
