Backyard Garden Beauty 😍 It rained again last weekend, and I think that will probably be our last significant precipitation for a while. The warmth of spring has come, along with the garden blooms and budding fruit... every day I take some time to appreciate the mild weather while it lasts, for soon the southern California heat will be upon us and we will be longing for cooler days. 🌼 Springs brings abundance in the garden, and also abundance in the calendar... as the weather warms and the school year winds down, there is an infinite number of things to DO and SEE, places to GO, tasks to ACCOMPLISH... yet my body is calling attention to its limitations, to its inability to see/do/be ALL, to its desire to rest, to its longing for slow times. 🌼 The wisdom and pace of my ancestors calls to me more loudly every day... In 1970, my grandmother, Margo, joined union activist Frank Lopez in founding the cultural arts oasis @plazadelaraza—its core concept inspired by a Lorca poem Margo loved: “The song, The poem, The picture, Is only water from the well of people. It should be given back to them in a cup of beauty That they may drink & in drinking understand themselves...” In my last post I mentioned a peep into Margo’s world via a note in the back of an old Keats poetry book. I’d love to share that note with you here: “Waldorf Astoria, 1934: Ina Claire was here tonight with some prince— Ambrose came over to tell me that she wanted to meet me— I was just thrilled, thrilled— When I got to her table, she acted as if I were doing her an honor, she said ‘when you came out and crossed yourself. I was shocked, but when you finished I was convinced, thoroughly, that the dining room of the Waldorf was exactly the right place for your dance— you have ideas and ideals, stick to them. You have a conviction that is so beautiful— never compromise.’ And the prince was so marvelous, saying that it thrilled him to see the music that he loved, “cordova,” danced as he had only dreamed and music like “alegrias” that was so “benalle,” & could be heard in any café in Europe, danced in a way that made it a revelation. It thrilled me very much that he got the effect I had so desired when designing the purple dress with the red underneath. What great happiness to receive intelligent compliments from the kind of people I long to associate with— still, I know that I don’t deserve it yet— they are so sensitive that they sensed what I have inside— I am very far from producing it— but it is great encouragement that they recognize the seed from where the flower should someday spring— still my seed is so far underground yet, it is still dark— But God, please, please don’t let it, by circumstance, dry up before it blooms. #Throwback to @wahkohtowindevelopment's first birch bark canoe build, in 2020–an unforgettable experience! 🛶 With three birch bark canoes under their belt, one of the things they’ve learned while building canoes is that it takes the entire community. It’s a lot of work to harvest the materials, which must be processed before they can become a part of the canoe. Fortunately, there were dozens of visitors throughout the build, stopping in and getting involved. Whether it was splitting a spruce root, stirring the pitch, or simply listening to all the stories being shared throughout the day, there was a job for everyone. Journaling Prompts for Personal Decolonization: A Beginning How can you support and uplift Black Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) in your community and beyond? These are difficult, heart-wrenching times. As a facilitator with lived experience across many intersectional identities, I believe we need a starting point. I offer these prompts as a personal invitation for deeper reflection. However, before attempting to step into unfamiliar shoes, I call you home- home to your own context. When I think about what's happening globally, I return to the beginning: contextualizing myself as a Boricua of the Diaspora living on Turtle Island. I ask, how did we get here? What did we "buy" into? How do we perpetuate, simply by living here, the structures created by the ever-present spirit of colonialism? I believe in rebuilding our capacity to hold multiple perspectives with humility, questioning our own privilege. Let's gently engage with these questions. Walking is the most fundamental form of physical activity for the human species. Navigating the world on two feet is unique among our primate family, let alone doing so for miles at a time. We’ve created a situation, though, where we no longer have to walk. Its something we must make a conscious effort to do. Choosing to do so can lead to various health benefits. Not the least of which is a reduction in your risk of all-cause mortality. Which essentially means you’re less likely to die in general. Some people may find walking to be not so challenging, or maybe just boring. There are countless ways to spice up your walking. You can vary your distances, or change the route you take. Additionally, you can add weight to your walks. By making yourself heavier, you are placing a greater load on your body, pressuring your physiology to work overtime. This can result in a more intense workout with greater health benefits.
