The Williams family were some of the earliest known Black residents in Henderson, Nevada's Carver Park neighborhood during the Great Migration in 1943. Despite being fixtures in Black History Month programs, their full story remained elusive. Minister Stretch Sanders felt compelled to bridge the gap, driven by a mission to ensure they're not just figures in history, but human beings with rich legacies and living descendants … "’ It always bothered me that we had this historic family that was being shown every year but nobody can answer simple questions like, ‘Where are they now?’’" - Vance “Minister Stretch” Sander … ‘They’re more than just a picture. And they’re more than just Carver Park residents because that’s kind of become who they are [locally].’’ I’ve read numerous Great Migration stories and none of them talk about [Las] Vegas.’ - Vance “Minister Stretch” Sanders https://thenevadaindependent.com/article/inspired-by-1940s-photo-minister-reconnects-with-hendersons-first-black-family

Why I do I have a passion for Genealogy? Because before I started this journey it took me in the unexpected road of healing. As I heal and shared with family and saw what happens when they start making their own connections to the truths they knew or thought they knew, it is healing. When some of us started the hard conversations that would normally be filed under "de eso no se habla" we all started healing together. Our community, nuestra gente, needs this... #genealogy #ancestralhealing #community #love #ancestors #familyhistory #familytree

Welcome back to Hyonyeo Foundation’s artist series “Don’t Make Me Wait.” Ko Yun-Jeong a.k.a. kOkO is a multimedia artist currently based in Los Angeles. (@veggie.back.muscles) : : kOkO’s feature story is comprised of three life milestones. The theme of her first milestone is ROOTS. Up until the age of 15, kOkO grew up in South Korea with her parents and three older sisters. : : In honor of Mother’s Day, ROOTS is about kOkO’s maternal lineage. kOkO’s family traditions and customs have been passed down matrilineally, reinforcing the importance of mothers and daughters within family structures. : : Traditions that include things like inheritance patterns and genetic talents show the special bond that transcends beyond biological connection. Both women are formidable artists who have received recognition and achieved critical accolades. : : Their maternal lineage represents a shared history of love, care, and support passed down from mothers to daughters over generations. It is also what gives both women a sense of identity and belonging. : : As artists, kOkO and her mother celebrate each others’ strength, resilience and achievements. They empower each other to be their own advocates of change. : : On behalf of kOkO and Hyonyeo Foundation, we wish everyone a happy Mother’s Day. Remember, no one loves you like your mother loves you. They love us unconditionally. Their love is unwavering. They prioritize our needs above their own. They make sacrifices to ensure our happiness, health, and success. : : Through kOkO's story, our audience will also see a transformation of parent-child dynamics that reverses the typical roles of nurturer and nurtured. : : Next milestone will feature kOkO’s story as a TCK (Third Culture Kid). : : : #tck #thirdculturekid #mothersday #maternallineage #multimediaartist #koreanpainting #koreanfineartassociation #familyhistory #hongsukchang #matrilineal

A selection of images from the “New York Grandmas” series will be displayed at the @g44members group show, part of the 2024 CONTACT Photography Festival. The show opens on May 15th and runs until May 26th. I’m excited to be among a group of talented artists. . More info on the show: www.spectracontactphotography.com . I’m also delighted to have a more comprehensive showcase of these images of my New York Grandmas at the North York Central Library until May 31st. . This has been a journey for me to share these personal images of my Halmonis. What started as casual documentation has become a story of sisterhood and aging. I first published a small book of photos in 2021 after the passing of one of my Halmonis, in her honor and to preserve my family history. In 2023, I shared a short text and images with @choamagazine , which were published in their issue “Aging in Place.” Thank you @choamagazine for amplifying the stories of women of the Korean diaspora. . Now in 2024, an in-person exhibition (two exhibitions!) is exactly how I wanted to conclude this photo journey. . Special thanks to @femininnnnnnne for helping me flush out the artist statement, and my family for inspiring me along the way. 💕 . . . . . . . #photoexhibition #contactphoto #torontophotographer #torontoartist #photodocumentary #familyhistory #photoseries #photoproject #g44members #halmoni #koreangrandma #familyphotography #seniors #aging #aginginplace #immigrantstories #familystories

Nearly a century before my birth, my great-grandmother was born near the mouth of Salt Creek Canyon in a small agricultural settlement known as Nephi, Utah. It was there that my great-great-grandparents, John and Ellen, welcomed their eighth child, Kate Martha. The railroad had been introduced to the area less than a decade earlier, the main purpose of the trains being to transport salt from the mines, and helped strengthen the town’s economy and business prospects. The Utah History Encyclopedia describes the town’s Main Street being lined with “restaurants, mercantile stores, hotels, clothing stores, a tailor, a furniture store, two millinery stores, two barber shops, and several other establishments near the end of the nineteenth century. At this time, because of the number of businesses, Nephi was frequently referred to as “Little Chicago.”* It’s interesting to think about the changes that the young settlement experienced during the first fifty years after being founded by Mormons who cleared the land to construct basic homes, then expanding to something comparable to Chicago, though on a much smaller scale. Imagining the various businesses operating during my great-grandmother’s childhood, I wonder how often she visited the milliner or dined in the restaurants. After reading her life sketch and learning more about her home life and family’s situation, I don’t think she enjoyed such luxuries very often. It's been a while since we had a Grandma Monday! That's Grandma on the right, holding the newborn. She got married very young, and had three kids right away. The youngest of those is Wendy, on the left, holding her few-month old son Ken. The newborn grandma is holding is her own! My Uncle Steve was what they called a "change of life" baby back then, and was younger then his nephew Ken! There are just some ancestors whose spirit and essence simply exude from the way they lived their lives, even decades after they’ve passed. Something about them that lives on. My great-great-great grandmother Almyra King Holsclaw is such an ancestress. Her life story (told aloud to her daughter in the late 1920s, who wrote it down), read to me like a children’s book, so guess what I did? My first (and currently only) children’s picture book, When Mother Read Aloud, is Almyra’s story, in her own words. The ADHD’er in me loves that at one point she said, “if it seems like I’m rambling, just remember that I am retelling things as they come to me.” What a beautifully honest and true woman! The real reason I made this book is because her story was not so “special.” Her life was ordinary— but she found (and made) magic in the mundane. Yet she still saw the value and beauty in her life story and decided to share it. That, to me, is profound. One of her daughters provided the title for my book— as seen in the poem by the same title. I just love its simple sweetness. And the quilt, made by Almyra herself, belongs to a dear cousin of mine who, along with her sister, helped create the book. And it was my grandmother, Mary Holsclaw Andrews, who first told me about Almyra when I was only a teenager. She planted the seeds in me, first sown in her as a young child long ago. This is why family history inspires my writing so deeply. There is a loving story that so often carries through. Or as Almyra once said, “I can see my life like a pattern woven in with the lives of so many others…” Simply beautiful. ✨ #familyhistory #familyhistorian #indianaancestors #indianahistory #jenningscountyin #ancestorstories #familyhistorystory #childrensbookauthor #indianaauthor

I’ve been working with @organized.with.emily to finally finish my godmother’s poetry book. This was a project I had started thirty years ago 😬, but always put it off till someday. In this series of photos I gathered her original handwritten poetry book, magnifying glass, desk pen & ink wells. It was always a treat to sit at her desk when we would visit. These treasured artifacts hold a special place in my memory. She always kept a stash of paper and some crayons for us to discover in her desk drawer. Prior to joining the Army, she was a kindergarten teacher, so she always knew how to keep us busy & curious 😊☺️ I’m re-looking at these photos for inspiration and ideas for a cover image. What do you think? Should I even use a photo or keep it plain? When I first started this project I was in college, and these poems were hard to read. I got bored and stopped. I picked up the project again when my children were small, and I was too busy to make sense of them. When I picked up the project again as an empty nester, I was overcome with emotion. All the poems, the order of the poems, everything spoke to me. I finally understood the story she was sharing in prose. The words hadn’t changed, but I had. I deeply wanted to preserve her story and share it with my family. Her original poetry book is over 100 years old, so sharing the actual book is not an option. But I wanted to preserve it in some way. When Emily shared the poetry book she had done for her grandmother, I knew that was how I wanted to preserve it. My own goddaughter, who recently graduated with a degree in education, is going to edit the book before it’s published. That feels special to me, a full circle experience. I’m excited to get this someday project done. And I’m even more excited to preserve my godmother’s story for future generations. #heirloomexplorer #poetrybook #vintagepoetrycollection #familyhistory #preservingmemories #preservingthepast

Enumerators asked if they were veterans of the Union or Confederate Army or Navy. It’s easily overlooked and is one of the last questions on the census page. You should look specifically for the initials UA (Union Army), UN (Union Navy), CA (Confederate Army), or CN (Confederate Navy). Use caution though since many enumerators used this column for other notes that had nothing to do with Civil War service. #CivilWarRecords #NationalArchives #NARA #1910Census #FamilyHistory #Genealogy

4 Steps in Your Memory Exploration Journey Ready to uncover the rich tapestry of your life through the objects that have silently witnessed your most cherished moments? Celebrate the memories by writing about etched in your beloved possessions. **Step 1: Begin with Fresh Eyes** Imagine you're a visitor in your own home. What items catch your eye? Approach each room with curiosity and an open heart. **Step 2: The Selection** Choose an object that whispers to you, whether it's prominently displayed or hidden away. It could be anything from a childhood toy, a collection of letters, to a simple kitchen utensil passed down through generations. **Step 3: Engage Your Senses** Hold the item in your hands. Feel its weight, its texture. What do you see? What do you remember? Let each sense guide you to forgotten corridors of your memories. **Step 4: Dive Deep into Memories** Reflect on the origin story of this object: **Where did it come from?** Recall the journey it took to find its place in your life. **When did it enter your life?** Was it a gift, a personal purchase, or a serendipitous find? **Who were you with?** Think about the people who were part of this memory. **How long has it been with you?** Consider the chapters of your life that this object has seen. A journey into history... The good history, The proud history, The ancient history, And some stories of bad history. Plus, my Aunt Beverly's flowers. First pic: my dad and his Fiat, June 1959 with his brother (in the car window), his youngest sister Gail, and his mom in the doorway. My dad's comments on the picture centered around the car - see the hinges on the back of the door, the hitch that towed a boat one summer, and so on. Second pic: Jacob Gillespie's headstone at the Gillespie Cemetery. Right Reverend Jacob Gillespie (rumored to not have actually been ordained) traveled to Eugene, Oregon in 1851 as part of a second group of settlers. While considered legendary as one of the city's founders, we heard a bit of the scoundrel level history about him on this trip, many thanks to Mike and Jan Gillespie for their time and all the hard work they do in keeping the history alive. (Also, apologies to Mike - I know he would rather have had us take pictures after the sprucing up for Memorial Day weekend.) We heard some hard history on this trip - stuff I would rather not know about my great-grandad Ralph. But we also heard some funny and good stories about my grandpa Raymond, and some fun stories about my dad's childhood. Third pic: Instead of going to the church partially founded by a Gillespie, we decided to go to a newer church in town called Summit View, and loved the worship there. It was welcoming, wonderful, and founded in faith in Christ. Fourth pic: The Duck Store at the University of Oregon. My Dad wanted a bit of swag (Jacob Gillespie helped found the college long ago), although no one in our immediate family has called it their alma mater. Fifth pic: My aunt Beverly's place from the backyard. My aunt Beverly, cousin Jenny, and cousin Lawrence hosted most of our meals, and 99% of our conversations this weekend. Lots of stories were shared. Politics were discussed. Opinions given. "Let me tell you what..." started a few stories. Sixth pic: some of my Aunt's beautiful flowers. #familyhistory #gillespiehistory #oregontrailhistory #familystories

. . . #genealogy #registromilitar #listadileva #famiglia #familyhistory #cittadinanza #cidadania

Hope everyone had a great weekend - ours "rocked"! 🪨 😆 My mother, Diana, (on the right) grew up in this rock-faced home. The house started out with white siding, but in about 1942, the wood siding was replaced with stone. In 1946, a fire severely damaged the home, but they were able to salvage enough to rebuild using the same stone. In 1962, while Barkley Dam was under construction, the Army Corps of Engineers demolished the home to make way for the formation of a new lake. The rubble of the home was bulldozed into a pile and burned. I don't know what happened to the stone, but some of the stones the original masons couldn't use were stacked by a creek that ran along the edge of the property. Years later, Grandmother gave the remaining property to my mother. After Mama died, and before we sold the property, we salvaged some of those rejected stones. A few of the stones we salvaged from the creek bank were the original quarried sandstone that was used as the home's facade. Others were rough limestone, probably excavated from the property when the homes were built. I named those stones "My Rocks o'Mama". 😆 My husband and I had similar stones - both sandstone and limestone - left over from building an outdoor fireplace and from rebuilding an extensive retaining wall. Over the weekend, we moved all the stones into an empty spot along with my husband's bourbon barrel. We plan to make a fountain with water from the barrel spilling into a small "pond" surrounded by these rocks. In addition, I came across some hostas named "Diana Remembered" which will be quite happy planted in this area. Pretty satisfying way to spend Mother's Day. ❤️ . . . Happy Mother’s Day! Spent precious time with my girls while hubby and son rocked a soccer tournament. As an artist and mom, here are some reads on motherhood and working artists. The “impossible life” of equal devotion to art and mothering, Jessica Grose “The Equivalents” by Maggie Doherty “Balancing Acts” by Danielle Kennedy The Mother Artist, by Catherine Ricketts The Maternal in Creative Work, Intergenerational Discussions on Motherhood and Art, by Ele a Machevska and Valerie Walkerdine “The Art of Motherhood”, by Marta Alvarez Gonzalez “Womb”, by Carol Santos (visit my website to listen to the audio recorded by my daughter Marina and I) Big shoutout to my village for helping me navigate motherhood and artistry. To my mom, @puposara , your unconditional love and friendship guides me. Cheers to all parents juggling love, family, and passion. 🌷 #Motherhood #Artistry #Grateful #familyhistory #childhoodmemories #contemporaryart

Thanks to my dear friend, Merle Saferstein, an incredible writer and person, for blurbing my forthcoming novel, CAVE OF SECRETS!! As a former Holocaust educator and author of several books, Merle was the perfect person to endorse this book, which includes themes of Jewish identity, antisemitism, homophobia along with magical realism, love and romance and beautiful culture and food! Set in Scotland and Michigan, CAVE OF SECRETS is a journey of the heart as well as landscape. If you like hiking in the Highlands, falling in love, and figuring out who you are, you'll love this story! Merle’s blurb: “Cave of Secrets transports readers on a timeless journey to Scotland while weaving a captivating tale of love, identity, and legacy. Lynne Golodner highlights family history and expectations that eventually force her characters to make difficult choices. Sprinkled with secrets and a touch of magical realism, this novel is a must-read.” —Merle R. Charlotte Mason’s teachings have transformed my own educational journey as a mother in such exciting ways. Simply by reading more books and finding connections, I’ve deepened my understanding of several different things. Recently, a simple mention of the name ‘Pittenger’ on a ‘Your Story Hour’ triggered a cascade of curiosity. Little did I know, it unearthed a profound family history—my great-great-great-grandfather’s pivotal role in the Civil War and his distinction as a Medal of Honor recipient. I want to share more on this, but I’m still learning as I read through his book. Which I find to be a gift because it allows me to have coffee and get to personally know a great-grandfather. In the introduction of his book, ‘Daring a Suffering,’ his mother is described as a ‘thinking mother.’ Which reminds me of what Charlotte Mason says about mothers, “The mother is qualified,” says Miss Mason, “and qualified by the Creator Himself, to become the principal agent in the development of her child; ... and what is demanded of her is a thinking love.” (Parents and Children) Mason’s emphasis on observation, connection, and lifelong learning has enriched not just my children’s education but also my own journey of discovery. Posted @withregram • @shabbysahi Mother’s Day in India and elsewhere in the world, though we celebrated this a few weeks before Easter as Mothering Sunday. Pic 2 in Mum & Nani Series. I remember Nani saying that you were expected to keep a straight face in photos back then. A smile would’ve been frowned upon ( specially when being photographed by a stranger in a studio setting ) Fun fact, I still have the saree Nani is wearing in this pic ( from nearly 75 years ago ) - an olive green light-as-air kanjeevaram with a rich maroon border shot through with intricate zari work in gold. Stunning. Preserved for emotional reasons though it is crumbling in places. Mother’s Day ♥️♥️♥️ #mothersday #portraits #familyhistory #lineage #mums #grandma

I've been printing some records pertaining to my great-grandparents and their families. I haven't done this in a while, but I'm finding that having printed copies helps me feel more organised and focus on the information more easily. Of course I also think digital copies are advantageous and have their benefits (clarity, zoom etc.), but I intend to keep both going forward. Swipe to see how I organise them in an accordion folder. The label on the document tells me who the record is about and what kind of record it is (the file name on my digital copies is similar), and the partitions in the folder correspond to each family line (my digital folders are organised similarly). Which team are you?

It's probably a sign of my age, but over the last few years I've become increasingly interested in finding out who my ancestors were and what their lives were like. In the first photo is my great grandma Celia, in what my dad thinks is a wedding portrait. A strange coincidence, but my dress was very similar and I don't remember having ever seen this picture. I love this image, because I see so much of her features in my dad and sisters, even in Javi. In the second is my great grandma Mary (second from right). She was from Ciesyzn, I think, which is a city that crosses the Czech Republic and Poland, and she left when she was still a teen. Despite having many kids, she worked as a seamstress, and was apparently very skilled. In the third is my great grandpa Frank at his job at Alice Chalmers, which was a manufacturing giant in Milwaukee. He was married to Mary. All three lived in the Polish section of Milwaukee. Their neighborhood, my dad says, was turned into a highway, but I still feel their presence when I visit. #polishancestry #familyhistory #familyheritage #milwaukeehistory @sonyabpage @kcarlisart @leslie.behnke @denisecdubois
