Day 12. Mother

5/12/2024, 9:43:58 PM

A letter to my Foremothers; The ones who came before me. I don't know all the trials and hardships you faced, All the suffering you endured, Your hopes and dreams; The ones fullfilled and the ones still wanting. There is much I dont know of you, Perhaps not even your name. But I know that through you, Came me. Thank you This stunning photo of an unknown ancestor and her baby took my breath away and inspired this poem. Whatever your current Mother's Day situation looks like, you have a host of Mother's who came before you and are rooting for you. Happy Mother's Day. I hope Alice was suitably excited to receive her Mother’s Day 'gift of her family', commissioned by her granddaughter, Renae. When potential clients approach me, it is difficult to explain the depth of detail that my research involves. Upon receipt of their presentation, clients are overwhelmed by the diligent and exhaustive story of their ancestry. This is why most of my clients embark upon a second project. Last year, Renae and her siblings commissioned me to research the ancestors of their 95-year-old grandfather, as a gift for Christmas. Delightfully impressed, it was felt that their grandmother should not miss out on the journey of her ancestors. And what a pleasure it was to research Alice’s family, with records and stories revealed from the mid-seventeenth century in Devon England. #familyhistory #genealogy #genealogyresearch #yourfamilyisyourstory #mothersday

Found this for Henry Legg (7th GGF) who help out a young lad and his family who were very poor and he hired the son as an apprentice!! That’s my ancestor! Absolutely incredible this document gave me goosebumps! Especially knowing that this was written up at the time of the reign of George II - I mean that’s just amazing!! Henry Legg was born In 1725 and this document was taken on July 2nd, 1761! Absolutely beautiful to look at a document like this and such a privilege! #familyhistory #familyhistoryresearch #familyhistorians #familyhistorian #genealogy #genealogyresearch #genealogyresearcher #genealogist #findmypast #ancestry

I first learned to love family history from my mom 🤍 She's been collecting stories, photos, and heirlooms for as long as I can remember. She interviewed family members I've never met and took us to visit our oldest relatives even when we were too small to understand the importance. Thank you for the gift of family history mom 🤍 Hi, I'm Jane 🤍 I hope to inspire you to seek out and connect with your Ancestors. Hidden gems may uncover stories! 4️⃣ Consult an Expert. ✨ Seek guidance from genealogists or local historians. Collaboration can unlock new avenues. 5️⃣ Explore OFFline Records and Microfilm 📚 Local libraries, historical societies, and archives hold untapped treasures. 6️⃣ Overcome Burned Courthouse or Missing Records: 🔥 Seek alternative sources from neighboring towns. Fill in the gaps left by missing records. 7️⃣ Be Creative in Substituting Sources for Critical Data. 🎨 Think outside the box and embrace small details for valuable insights. 8️⃣ Expand Your Network with Cluster and Collateral Relative Research. 🌐 Delve into extended family and friends' lives. The Guild of One-Name Studies is a global organization that focuses on single surname studies. A one-name study “is a project researching all occurrences of a surname, as opposed to a particular pedigree (ancestors of one person) or descendancy (descendants of one person or couple).” You can visit the guild’s website and search for or browse surname studies. Each study has a summary page, which includes things such as spelling variants, name distribution, and general information about the study. In some cases, there is a project page, which may contain all sorts of interesting information, such as DNA projects, biographies, photographs, research databases, and lineages. You do not have to be a guild member to view the project summaries or project pages. The information provided can be helpful in your research, especially if you’re just starting to work on a new-to-you surname or are stuck in your research. Learning about the variant spellings and the general origins can lead to new research avenues and save you a lot of frustration. Seeing what others have pulled together about a surname and its associated families can also be beneficial. Head on over and check it out 👇 https://one-name.org … P.S. On May 10th 1940, Amsterdam was invaded by the German army. I recently stumbled across this fascinating letter from that day. It reads: "To the porters of the City Theatre, From this you receive your orders, do not let anyone into the theatre who is not completely necessary. You must not let anyone in unless you can personally vouch for them. 🧳 We often think that our ancestors were not as mobile as we are today, and perhaps that is true to an extent. But there are also many cases of people in previous centuries moving extensively throughout the country. 🧳 My 3x-great-grandfather Vasa B. Jones is one example. In my last post about him, I mentioned how widely traveled he was, both from moving of his own accord and being held as a POW during the Civil War. Today I thought I'd share the in-progress visualization I'm making to trace his movements through time. 🧳 Using Google Maps, I simply dropped pins for each location where he was known to have lived or stayed, changed the colors for different categories (e.g., pre-Civil war moves, movements as a soldier and POW, and post-Civil War moves), and connected the pins with lines to show the chronological progression of his movement. A next step is adding details in the notes section of each pin to provide more information, like sources. 🧳 Vasa was born in Pennsylvania, and interestingly returned east to Ohio and later West Virginia after moving west to Illinois. He also spent some time in Nebraska, but I have yet to pinpoint exactly when and where. 🧳 Does it surprise you to see that someone who lived in the 19th century moved around so much? Did your ancestors move like Vasa, or did they stay put in one area? #genealogy #genealogyresearch #familyhistoryresearch #familyhistory #genealogymaps #mappingancestors #vasabjones

Emmeline Pankhurst being arrested while trying to present a petition to the King George V at Buckingham Palace, 21 May 1914. The arresting officer, Chief Inspector Rolfe, seen here carrying Emmeline away from the demonstration, had been ordered to arrest Emmeline by the Home Office. Having been released from Holloway Prison in March under the terms of the Cat and Mouse Act, Emmeline had failed to return to prison at the end of the month. After her arrest she was driven straight back to Holloway to continue her sentence. As she was being carried past a group of reporters Emmeline called out ‘Arrested at the gates of the Palace. Tell the King’. Emmeline’s attempt to petition the King represented a change of tactics by the suffragette leader. During 1914 she decided to bypass government ministers and deal directly with ‘the Throne’. She had seen that such an appeal by Irish republicans had resulted in the King calling an Irish conference but Emmeline’s attempt to engage similar royal interest in the suffragette campaign ultimately failed. #genealogy #genealogyresearcher #professionalgenealogy #professionalgenealogist #genealogyresearch #ancestry #ancestryresearch #ancestryuk #ancestors #familyhistorian #familyresearcher #familyhistory #familytree #socialhistory #britishhistory #oldphotographs #oldphotos #vintagephotography #vintagephotos #blackandwhitephotography #blackandwhitephotograph #suffragette #suffragettes #suffragemovement #womensrights #christabelpankhurst #emmelinepankhurst

Several things caught my eye in this snapshot recently freed from its magnetic album/Scotch tape confinement. • The photo was taken in the driveway between the garage and the back porch of our grandparent's home. This is an important tidbit for our next gen family because the concrete slab the garage stood on is still there. This gives those too young to recall the house (which was demolished by the Corps of Engineers in anticipation of the formation of Lake Barkley) a physical point of reference. • Grandmother is dressed in her work clothes. I can't say "uniform" because she was not a nurse. She owned and operated a nursing home and for many years she wore all white like her nurses. • Granddaddy was not as tall as we remember him. We all thought he was at least 6'3", but no, his WWI draft record says he was 5'11" and this photo confirms that. Also, he has his walking cane in hand - I've asked, but none of us know why he used a cane. • My aunt Tootsie (left) is the one who put together the tape-upon-tape magnetic album I've been disassembling. 😵‍💫 • My cousin, Shelley, (second from left) was named after Granddaddy and was his first grandchild. She was an only child and died a tragic death several years ago. • My aunts and cousin were visiting from Alton, IL, and it was always a big deal when they came home. It felt as though we were house staff preparing to entertain royalty. (We may/may not have been a tad resentful of non-locals who visited and took all our grandparents attention. I mean, what made THEM so special, huh??? 😂 ) • I somehow have developed the same body shape as Grandmother. 🤦‍♀️ Ah, the things you learn when you examine old photos. 😂😂😂 . . . . . . . . . . #telltheirstories #familyhistory #oldphotos #photomemories #familyphotos #familystories #familyhistorian #genealogy #genealogyresearch #artofrecollection

Day 27 of #30daysofgenealogy Brick wall success! I have 3 brick walls, 2 I’m still working on. The third was on my paternal Grandmothers fathers family. Isaac Moore Atkinson. All I knew about him was that he died when my Gran was only 19 or 20, and that he died due to being gassed in the war. So when I found not just his death record, but his death record from the post office where he worked, then I found his birth record and his census records and valuation… I’ve found so much about him including who his parents were… my 2x great grandparents! I’m so excited to explore this branch further! #genealogy #genealogist #familyhistory #familyhistorian #familyhistoryresearch #genealogyresearch #findmypast #ancestry

c.1865 training ships of the Royal Navy Cadet School, based in Dartmouth, Devon, on the River Dart, with the Old Mill Creek in the background. The Britannia, the three deck ship on the left, had been the cadet training ship at Dartmouth from 1864 - 1869. Around 1865, the number of cadets was too large for just one ship so the Hindustan, the two deck ship on the right, arrived and was connected to Britannia by a covered walkway. 📜Death certificates solve brick walls, but do you wonder if you're allowed to order them? or HOW to order them? or WHOSE you should order? (The answer may surprise you!) ✅Who is Allowed to Order? States sometimes restrict who can order based on the relationship to the decedent or how much time has passed since the death. No one, not even the most advanced researcher, can know those restrictions until they consult the state's department of health or department of vital statistics website to find out. If you don't qualify by relationship for a certified copy, you may be eligible to order a genealogy or research copy (which just means that it may have parts of the certificate redacted). 📃🔍 🗝📧How Do I Order? The ordering process differs from state to state. Each state's vital records website is different, with different forms, different ordering processes, etc. Sometimes, it's confusing. (It's confusing for everyone, not just you.) The best thing to do is just start the ordering process. Once you start the process, the rest comes easier. Tips to order:✒️ Find the instructions online. Each state should have a website with an order form available for download. Usually, instructions are also listed. If the instructions are not clear, call the office that oversees fulfillment -OR- ask a genealogy buddy or a local genealogy society for guidance. Whose Certificate Should I Order? ❓Once you know how to order, you should get certificates for your target ancestor AND other family members. Those other death certificates may well solve mysteries when your direct ancestor's certificate does not. For example, order certificates for your target ancestor’s siblings, nieces/nephews, cousins, etc. A second cousin's ancestors are also yours, so tracing their line backward will lead to answers. Don't be intimidated. Get the certificate. You'll be surprised how much you learn from it. More info on BrickWallBusterCards.com/blog

When we think about the lives of the people who lived in the tenements in New York City, certain populations and demographics often come to mind. 35 years ago, a woman wote to @thetenementmuseum asking them to feature an exhibit about Black New Yorkers. She wrote "So when you're planning your museum, I beg of you, please, please don't forget them." ---- “Thirty-four year later, the museum has the permanent exhibit, telling the story of a Black family living at 17 Laurens St., in what is now SoHo, back in 1870. ‘These are stories that need to be told,"’ said Laura Lee, the director of training and resources at the Tenement Museum.” … With the exhibit at the Tenement museum this gives guest a way to explore the untold stories of what Black life was in New York City in the late 1800’s. https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/tenement-museums-a-union-of-hope-exhibit-joseph-and-rachel-moore-black-history-month/

Sandusky geneaology Harriet Hutter had a famous uncle - William Clark, governor of Missouri and leader of the the Lewis & Clark expedition! Her mother, Elizabeth Kennerly Risque, had a sister, Harriet Kennerly Clark. Mrs. Clark was previously married to Dr. John Radford who was gored by a wild boar and killed. She then married William Clark. William Clark (August 1, 1770 – September 1, 1838) was an American explorer, soldier, Indian agent, and territorial governor.[1] A native of Virginia, he grew up in pre-statehood Kentucky before later settling in what became the state of Missouri. Along with Meriwether Lewis, Clark led the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804–1806 across the Louisiana Purchase to the Pacific Ocean, the first major effort to explore and map much of what is now the Western United States and to assert American claims to the Pacific Northwest. Before the expedition, he served in a militia and the United States Army. Afterward, he served in a militia and as governor of the Missouri Territory. From 1822 until his death in 1838, he served as Superintendent of Indian Affairs.
