Ancestry DNA kits are on sale right now at the lowest price I've ever seen them. If you've been on the fence about DNA testing, getting it on sale is a good start. However, I really believe that DNA testing is a deeply personal decision. IF you are really happy with the family structure you have now and would be really hurt to learn that you may not have the full truth, I would NOT recommend DNA testing. But if you're looking for a larger family story, no matter what that truth may be, or you have a complicated family dynamic that paper records have not been able to clear up, it could be worth testing. For those of you who have chosen to DNA test, what advice do you have to share with those who are trying to decide if it's the right choice for them?

Check out Jim Brewster's, SME at FamilyTreeDNA, latest addition to his surname series. ➡️ bit.ly/4bjAIoC This time, Jim looks at patronymics and its role in genealogy. Patronymics is a type of naming system in which a person's surname is derived from the given name of one of their ancestors, typically their father. Essentially, it means that your ancestor's last name might indicate who their father is. #genealogyreasearch #genealogytips #familytree #familytrees #FamilyTreeDNA #DNA #DNAtest #genetic #genetics #genealogist #ancestors #ancient #ancienthistory #etymology #name #callmebyyourname #whatsinaname

Hey Genealogy Family (G-Fam) 👋🏿 🌳 I remember reading a short poem/story my first few weeks in college. It discussed history is always written from the “hunter”, not the lion. It resonated with me because it’s true. It made me understand that life is all about perspective and it made me ask more questions (than previously😂). Who writes and promotes history? Again, what were their intentions? Genealogy 101 course is available. Link in bio S/O to the creator of this statement. With your research plan in mind, cast a wide net when deciding which records to consult. New records are digitized and made available online every day, but there are still vast amounts of valuable records and resources that are offline as well. Nowadays we have unprecedented access to an incredible number of records and information thanks to preservation and digitization efforts. Take advantage of this and don’t limit your research! As a historical investigator, it’s advantageous to leave no stone left unturned and gather all of the existing evidence available before moving on to the next part of the case you’re building. A family tree with a strong foundation is based on thorough research 🔎 Let’s say your plan is to determine where and when your great-grandfather died, and you find this information listed in a death index. Instead of stopping your search there, follow the lead from the index to the original record where the information for the index was sourced from, in this case, the death certificate. This might reveal even more information, such as the names and birthplaces of his parents, which will propel your research forward and add to your evidence for the family. Maybe you notice a peculiar place of death listed as I did recently, when I learned that a cousin 3x removed died in a state penitentiary at 36, and you go on to research the location further for more information around the circumstances of and events leading up to death by searching newspaper, court and prison records. Allow yourself to be creative and flexible with your research. Searching far and wide can also be applied to researching the siblings of an ancestor or identifying their FAN club (Friends, Acquaintances, Neighbors), seeking out historical context or any other number of genealogical adventures that ultimately tell the story of your ancestor’s life 🙌 And hey, you never know when any of those foraged details just might hold the clue that will lead you to your next great AHA moment 💡 💻 If you’d like more guidance on where to look for records when you’re just getting started, click the YouTube link in my bio for more!

Tickets are on sale for the 2024 Palatines to America National Conference! Register at palam.org One of our featured speakers is James M. Beidler, interim Executive Director of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania, and author of four well-received books relating to genealogy. Jim will give two separate presentations at the National Conference. They are of broad interest to many in our German genealogy community! If you enjoy Jim's presentation about Ancestry.com's Hank Jones database, visit our open house on Sunday, June 9th @gtownlib , home of Hank's personal Palatine research collection.  Palatine Resources in Pennsylvania Repositories Dozens of families from the 1709er migration to New York state found new opportunities in Pennsylvania starting in the 1720s. The epicenter of this re-migration was the Tulpehocken Creek region and two key repositories Berks County have unique collections highlighting these Germans, including a partial version of the immigrant card file from the Institute for Palatinate History and Ethnology in Kaiserslautern, Germany.   Getting Best Use of Ancestry.com’s Hank Jones Database Henry Z “Hank” Jones Jr.’s legacy as the leading genealogist of the 1709er migration was secured by his many books studying the 800-plus original families plus finds regarding many more Germans who came later. As part of his well-deserved retirement from the active family history world, Jones has allowed a database of those works to be placed on Ancestry.com as “Palatine German Immigration to Ireland and U.S., Hank Z Jones collection, 1654–1878.” Learn some tips and tricks to use this invaluable database! #albanyny #aroundalbany #newyork250 #palatine #palatinemigration #genealogyresearch #genealogytips #genealogy

Today is World Book Day! Our research libraries around the state have thousands of books that provide rich resources for anyone interested in Missouri and our history. We have a large section of family genealogy books like these. This particular one is about the Matthews family from Sikeston, MO. It contains lavish color illustrations, photographs of people and architecture, family history, and other historical information. This one was printed in 1942 and donated to us in 1943. Most family history books in our library are not nearly as ornate as these—often they are as simple as a handwritten or typed notebook. All of them can be a boon of information to genealogy researchers. ------- #statehistoricalsocietyofmissouri #shsofmo #MissouriHistory #ruralmissouri #smalltownmissouri #genealogy #genealogytips #genealogyresearch #sikestonmo #sikestonmissouri #matthewsfamily #newmadridcounty #scottcountymo

Alta C. Allen Born: April 4, 1908 Married Homer Cleo Harmon on April 21, 1936 They were blessed with two children: Katherine Harmon, born in 1934, and Homer Walter Harmon, born in 1937. Tragically, on October 23, 1939, disaster struck their family. Alta and both children perished in a devastating fire that engulfed their home under mysterious circumstances. Upon returning home, Homer discovered his beloved wife and children succumbed to the flames. It appears the children were innocently playing near a smoldering fire outside when their clothing caught ablaze. Seeking refuge, they rushed inside where their mother, in a valiant attempt to rescue them, also became engulfed in flames. Their lives tragically ended in the blaze. Alta, my husband’s great aunt, tragically passed away in the fire before he was born, leaving behind a legacy of sorrow and unanswered questions. After her untimely demise, her husband Homer found solace in remarriage, tying the knot with Naomi Sally House on April 21, 1940, in Price, Utah. Together, they were blessed with three children: Homer Arthur Harmon, Lucille Naomi Harmon, and Darrell Lee Harmon. Reflecting on the family’s history, it’s poignant to note that Homer Arthur Harmon, one of Alta’s sons, departed from this world in 2009. Despite the passage of time, his widow Susan remains a steadfast presence in their family’s narrative. Driven by curiosity and a desire to connect with the past, I reached out to Susan through Facebook, hoping to glean insights into Alta’s life and tragic end. Though our conversation was brief, it offered a glimpse into the lives intertwined by shared history and loss. While Susan couldn’t shed much more light on Alta’s story, our exchange served as a poignant reminder of the enduring impact of familial ties and the importance of honoring those who came before us. (the family photo is of Augustus C Allen and Evelyn Clara Huck. Alta is the baby sitting on her mother’s lap.) #genealogyfindingmyroots #genealogytips #famikyhistoryresearch

It’s important to check the branches on your tree. Due to events, you never know who ended up living with who. If you only rely on what ancestry or family search pulls as hints, you may miss family living with aunts and uncles. Maybe grandparents or great grandparents. Could be living with in-laws. Make sure to turn over every rock on your search. I know a lot of us want to just go backwards to the roots. But by doing that you miss out on so much information. So many family members. Some genealogy tips ⬇️⬇️⬇️ I search newspapers for events with using language the represent the time. If you believe your ancestor was a victim of violence I wouldn’t search, “Black man murdered”. I would search for him being the aggressor and the victim in all places. I’ll look for words like Brute, giant, scary, thug, etc., the same way the media speaks about Black victims of police violence. The same way the talked about Trayvon Martin is the same way the media spoke about Emmett Till. Check out the free newspapers in my b i o Also look how the how to guides I have about looking for enslaved records. Four step, seven step, up to 72 pages of what documentation you should be looking for, what to do with them, and most importantly where to find them. #formerlovepoet #bristerenglishproject #tangiblehistory #GenealogyTips #BlackFamilyHistory #blackgenealogy #AncestryResearch #FamilyTree #AfricanAmericanGenealogy #genealogy #bristerep #tangiblehistory #nonprofit #bristerep

Recently @ferreyragenealogy traveled across Argentina to a small farming town in the province of Buenos Aires called Carmen de Areco. We were investigating information on Elizabeth McCutcheon. I wanted to leave you with a tip if you are ever searching through documents in South America. Looking through these old documents, you have to be aware that even though she was of English decent, having lived in Argentina for many years, she adapted the Spanish version of her name, Isabel. Also, taking into account many people in Argentina never learned perfect English, many names were spelled different and logged under the misspelled name .... In this case, Elizabeth, was logged under Isabel; and McCutcheon, logged under Mac Cutten. Luckily, with our experience, we were able to see exactly what happened here, and studying the document further, seeing how the witness was her son in law, and her husband's name was Abaitua, we could confidently say, we hit the Jackpot!! Details of the document were able to confirm her identity to us. But if you just happen to glance quickly at Isabel's name in an index, knowing you are looking for an Elizabeth, you could have missed a key Record to further your investigation. Genealogical Brick Walls are all too common. And even though it is very time consuming searching page by page, record by record, let's pay close attention to these details so we don't miss a key piece of information that could make or break our investigation .... . . . #genealogy #genealogyresearch #genealogist #genealogyphotoaday #ancestry #investigator #familyhistory #Argentina #chile #genealogytips #ferreyragenealogy #cantstopwontstop

Yesterday I posted the headstone of John Stephens, purely because I thought the handwriting was very impressive. This got me curious, so I went and found his will. Did you know that wills are a excellent family history resource? Just from the first paragraph of this will I learnt that John lived all his life in Leicester and worked as a hosier. He owned multiple houses with a yard, garden and outbuildings which was to be split between his sons John and Richard, and his grandson also called John. Meanwhile, his son Thomas was to be paid £150. Richard was also given £400 to be used to help support his sister Elizabeth. On the 1911 census my great grandparents Eli and Bella were registered at 3 Martha Place, Coley. Imagine then finding a photo of Martha place taken in 1911! My ancestors must be in this photo, at least I like to think they are. • Photo courtesy of @readingmuseum #readingmuseum #readinghistory #berkshirehistory #myfamilyhistory #readingberkshire #coley #coleypark #ancestry #ancestryuk #familytree #familytreehistory #familyhistory #genealogy #genealogygirl #genealogytips #blackandwhitephoto

What's the most unusual first name you've come across in your research? Yesterday, I came across a Kerenhappuch for the first time (1841 census)! Despite its unfamiliarity, it's actually a Biblical name from the Old Testament; Kerenhappuch and her sisters, Jemimah and Kezia, were the daughters of the prophet Job. #familyhistory #genealogy #familytree #familyhistoryresearch #familyhistoryresearcher #familyhistoryresearchservices #familyhistorynews #familyhistorystories #genealogy #genealogyresearch #genealogytips #ancestry #ancestryuk #ancestryresearch #professionalgenealogist #professionalgenealogy #heritage #heritageresearch #genealogytuition

Class: Homesteading - Land for All! Homestead application papers are good sources of genealogical information. Application papers often mention family members or neighbors, and previous residence as shown in dozens of papers which may include land application forms, citizenship applications, family Bible pages, marriage or death certificates, newspaper clippings, and affidavits. Instructor Christine Cohen's interest in genealogy began in 1977 with the airing of the TV mini-series "Roots" and was piqued when she found a typed pedigree chart of her Dutch heritage from the New Netherlands in the 1660's. She is a native Californian, and a graduate of UCLA in Political Science. Christine is a long time member of the Whittier Area Genealogical Society, and is currently the Program Director. In addition she is also a member of the El Redondo Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Society of Daughters of Holland Dames, and the Association of Professional Genealogists Cost: $10 for RVGS Members, $20 for non-members. Click here to register: https://rvgslibrary.org/FormPage.asp?FormID=42 Registration closes Friday, April 5, at noon. This class will be recorded and made available to those who registered for 30 days. #genealogy #genealogyclass #homesteading #rvgs #genealogyresearch #genealogytips
