There are days I feel far too healed to acknowledge the years of brokenness. There are days I feel far too broken in comparison to all of the painstaking work I’ve delved into. All days I live somewhere in a reality where I hold all of it. I hold the Mother’s Days when everyone was present. When mature faces and hands existed, but were not marked with so much life. Days when a crinkled up construction paper card and a school day petal meant something special. I hold the Mother’s Days when things began to be fragile. Days when the fringes frayed and nerves were tense. Times when any gift no matter the thought felt like too much and too little all in one, but I still tried despite the pain. I hold the Mother’s Days where hearts still beat and everyone remained above ground. Yet, too many were missing. Years worth of wondering. Years worth of my insides churning as moms lined the stage during church services and I inhabited the pew without. And now, I hold the Mother’s Days where I realized that distance, as painful and hard as it was for all of the years, was just a symbol of generational chains. Chains I was meant to break as the gift to all of us. A symbol of life. A symbol of inabilities to fight the demons inside. And now I get to look upon all who remain above the dirt once more. The petals may not be as bright as they used to be. Faces come with spots and lines. Hands worn from the toll. Hard stone in place of skin. Yet each year it blooms again. Beautiful in its own regard. A reminder that storms and rocky ground are just that, but with tending beauty is possible. And I will sit in that today. Somewhere in the midst of presently thankful, aware of the weight of not being able to hug who rests in heaven, reminiscent and holding of all realities that have been mine over the course of this journey. {gentle reminder} I often tell my clients when we’re working with challenging emotions or parts — to imagine pouring them a cup of tea and getting to know it. There’s something about the art of having tea that feels kind, gentle, nourishing and nurturing. People have gathered for centuries with tea. It’s communal, it’s ritual, it’s an intentional pause of presence. Learning to both be the host and the receiver is much of the work of growing into maturity. To set the table and then to actually sit down AND dwell is a muscle I’m learning to flex. To be a daughter and a mother To be both/and To not have them mixed up to young To have them clear is kind To know the proper order Mothering is an art… Receiving mothering is also an art (especially as we grow) Many are straddling roles on this holiday weekend. May you let your feet land in gentle places. May you let your heart bloom in its time. This weekend may be complex and complicated or nourishing and gentle. May you honor the mother line and the daughter/son line as you take good care of you in the ways that support and nourish your wellbeing. There’s no one size fits all, it’s a relational dance.
