The time is upon us where the thin veil of Autumn has arrived and the energy is strong. This is a time where we may feel more inclined to celebrate and embrace Spirit. Especially those of our ancestors and loved ones. Communing with them, calling them forth and feeling their closeness. I thought I would share a peek into my personal work with my ancestors and loved ones and how I honor their lives and lineage as we prepare for the arrival of Samhain. Some of the ways I like to honor them is by holding a sacred space for them. I place their photos within the space, write prayers and sing their favorite songs. I always make sure to have fresh water and often share my personal bakes with them. I will practice divination with them in the form of tarot as well so that I may journal and reflect on lessons and reoccurring themes within our lineage that may be present in my own life currently. Your ancestral practice is personal and does not necessarily need to be those whom you have genetic ties to either but anyone who took part in shaping your life and story today. In previous years, I outlined how the Ancients celebrated while we're not going to go the ritual exactly the way the Ancients did, we're going to take point from them! The Ancients started this at midnight, and you are more than welcome to start at midnight, I myself will be starting at 9 pm. We're going to need a plate, the candle, and salt. Starting in the back of your home/apartment, light the candle. As you light the candle, I want you to focus on calling in your Ancestors with good intentions, the ones who want you to succeed. Ask them to circle you and protect you. Now, very carefully walk backward towards your front door with the plate of salt and the lit candle while saying outloud very forcefully. "I redeem myself, I redeem my bloodline. I return all good energy to me and mine." Open your door, and if you can throw the salt out the door saying, "You are not welcome here." Blow the candle out and shut the door. Place the plate back on the space you set up. We will not touch it again until the 11th. You can light an additional white candle for the Good Ancestral spirits, but it's not necessary. For the 11th, we're still not going to set up any Ancestral photos. But on the 13th, we will. So, start collecting photos and anything that was your Ancestors. Now, when I say Ancestors, I mean the ones you know loved and supported you. Practiced by filí (poet-seers) and draoithe(druids), Imbas Forosnaí was a magical process by which seekers gained enlightenment through visions; an invocation of altered states of consciousness for the purpose of achieving visionary inspiration. Put very simply, it was a ritual for obtaining second sight. Mentions of this ritual are found in early Irish texts such as the Táin Bo Cúlaigne, An Fhiannaíocht (The Fenian Cycle 2nd Century CE), Senchus Mór (the oldest surviving written Gaelic law), and the Sanas Cormaic ( Cormac’s Glossary, credited to Cormac mac Cuileannáin, king-bishop of Munster, in 908 CE.) The Sanas Cormaic describes a ritual practice of “eating red flesh“, leading some folks to believe the draoíthe used Amanita muscaria or “Fly Agaric” mushrooms for this process. The literal translation of “red flesh”, however, suggests the flesh was that of a pig, dog, or cat. The text is unclear as to whether the Irish gods were called upon to watch over the draoí seeking visions or if other draoíthe watched over him as he slept. Chanting and singing (tenm laida) were part of the ritual, as was covering the participant’s face with their hands, seeking darkness or privacy in order to receive the visions. It’s important to remember that Druids were very secretive, and guarded their practices vehemently. Theirs was an oral tradition, and therefore we do not have first hand written accounts of their practices and rituals. Though the Sanas Cormaic outlines the ritual of Imbas Forosnaí, we are not certain if it was written by Cormac mac Cuileannáin or if it is composed of others writings and compiled by him. Therefore, we must take the description of this ritual with a grain of salt. For me personally, in my own practice, I use this information as inspiration for my personal rituals involving divination and clairvoyance, but I would not go so far as to claim I’m engaging in an Irish Druidic practice. However, I feel comfortable using the phrase “Imbas Forosnaí” when speaking with ancestral spirits, to indicate the enlightenment that I seek.

He is known for his exceptionally eerie singing & masterful guitar play amid living a hard and fast life; after having alleged struck a deal with the Devil to become one of the greatest Blue's musicians of all time. According to Hoodoo Lore, "It was a cool October night when Robert Johnson walked alone with his guitar down a dark road in the Mississippi River Delta beneath a full moon. He walks to the crossroad at Highways 49 & 61 in Clarksdale, Mississippi. As he walks he thinks about his sorrow. He thinks about the jeers & shouts for him to get off stage. Can't believe that it's over a year since dad passed away. After a long discussion on culture, identity, and as well as appreciating the relationship I had with my father, I decided to make an Ofrenda for him. Ofrenda is a small altar typically created to commemorate passed loved ones. Although originating from southern mexican regions, across latin america , different countries and regions have various ways of honoring the dead in similar fashion. To honor my Dad's own culture, I used Fraktur art and motifs, including the little Distelfinks(Old German for goldfinches, a sign of happiness, good luck and wealth in PA German culture) he loved so much. Although it doesn't get easier grieving, it was nice to have this closure and create this tribute for him and have an official altar for him. Born in Senegal/Gambia, "Phillis Wheatley" was just 8 years old when she was kidnapped and sold into Slavery. Even at a tender age, she showed exceptional intellectual promise. At the Wheatley's instruction, she learned to read Greek & Latin. At age 12, she discovered Alexander Pope, who she'd model her own literary work after. By age 13, she achieved her 1st publication. As her prominence grew, the Wheatleys sought a publisher to release an anthology of her work. In Britain, a publisher approached the Wheatleys with interest, but demanded proof that it was indeed "Phillis'" work. Shortly thereafter, a literary trial unsued. A young "Phillis Wheatley" endured 18 White male arbiters in Boston who were tasked with validating her work; none in the U.S. believed that an enslaved Afrikan girl was capable of such impeccable work. Of course, she proved them very wrong. 11 months later, "Phillis Wheatley's" 1773 anthology was published. Her work was deeply attuned to the societal issues of her time. If you have found yourself going through a transitional state and separating from the church. I understand that you are not separating from God. There is not just a singular path to God. Recognize the separation from what doesn’t feel right in your spirit that goes on in the BUILDING, with the PEOPLE, not with your relationship with your God and your spirits. “Church” is everywhere. As is God. Don’t get discouraged by things you may have seen and heard “in the name of God”. Some churches are so uppity and righteous that they will make you feel like you will never be good enough, that God will never hear you, that God does not see you. If you’re not dressed in your Sunday Best, if you’re not quite vibrating, where you need to be, if you are not yet clean, you got no business in church bothering God.. But that is so untrue, that is so opposite of the truth. God will meet you right where you are. Spirit walks with you everywhere you go. Whether you walkin the stroll, or walking in your whites. Conversations with God and spirit, relationships with God and spirit are made to enhance, enlighten, and give us purpose. While searching duchas.ie for folklore surrounding black cats, I came across quite a few troublesome results. In general, black cats have gotten a bad rap throughout modern history, what with the church associating them with witches and/or The Devil ™️. Here are some of my favorite (non-violent) piseóga about these brilliant creatures: • Anyone who sees the black cat at The Well of the Black Cat on Samhain Eve will get what they wish for. • If a black cat crosses your path, it is unlucky, but if you catch the black cat and pull three nibs of his hair and put them through a piece of red flannel, it will remove the bad luck. • To meet a black cat first thing in the morning is good luck, but last thing in the night, unlucky. • To see a black cat when going to a fair or market is lucky. • If you had a black cat and you were going to change your house, you should bring the cat to the new house with you or else you would have bad luck. • A black cat running across a road is a sign of an accident. • It was said that “If a black cat to you should stray, butter his feet and make him stay!” because it is a sign of luck to have a stray black cat enter your home. • When receiving a cure from renowned bean-feasa Biddy Early, it was good luck to be greeted by her black cat, but bad luck to be greeted by her brown cat. • Emblems of the black cat are worn to bring good luck to the wearer. A Witch’s Ancestral Prayer 🕯️ With Samhain approaching, I am nurturing my ancestor altar daily and communing with those who came before me. In light of recent events with the health of my mother, I have discovered more regarding my own personal lineage. A fitting time to I suppose. My mother was adopted and I never really asked her questions about it until recently after noticing quite a change on my ancestry DNA. While I don’t put too much weight into those tests, it did bring up curious thoughts regarding her side of the family. As I dove deeper into photos and records I began to feel a sense of fear. My practice as an American Irish pagan has always been a huge part, if not the forefront of my daily craft. This fear I felt after discovering more stirred something within me and got me thinking about how closed off I’ve truly been in my practice. I am working on being more open to the other parts of me and my lineage that are feeling so ever present and for someone who isn’t too fond of change, naturally I feel a little nervous and scared. It's common for ts to feel super weird at first. A lot of people feel like they look crazy honoring their ancestors like this. But if it's any consolation, more people are doing all of this than you think and a vast majority of them are feeling the exact say way lmao Still, the pros outweigh the cons. The more you honor your ancestors, the better they can make your life. The closer you can get to both them and your living family. And it's not like you have to do this all the time. Like once a month is gucci. It's okay too if you don't know what your peoples liked to eat. Plenty of people are adopted or just otherwise estranged from their family. Just make something you know you make well. You'll know if they like it or not by how it looks the following day. If it's dried out but not moldy or anything, they enjoyed it ! If it's dry and moldy, a negative spirit had a feast w it. If it's wet/juicy and moldy, there's just way too much negative energy in your home and your peoples can't even get to it.
