Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe (1967) . . Folk rock singer Tim Rose’s slower version of the song (recorded in 1966 and claimed to be Rose’s arrangement of a wholly traditional song)inspired the first single by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. The ex-bassist for the Animals, Chas Chandler, who was now focusing on managing other acts, had also seen Rose performing the song at the Cafe Wha? in New York City and was looking for an artist to record a rock version of “Hey Joe”. Chandler discovered Jimi Hendrix, who had also been playing at the Cafe Wha? in 1966 and performing an arrangement of “Hey Joe” inspired by Rose’s rendition. Chandler decided to take Hendrix with him to England in September 1966, where he would subsequently turn the guitarist into a star. All three of the gentlemen featured today are among the best 25 #guitar players of all time. #RobertJohnson is the undisputed #KingOfTheBlues and quite possibly the most influential musician of the modern era, cited as a seminal influence by just about every #Blues musician, #ChuckBerry, #BobDylan, #KeithRichards, #RobertPlant, and #EricClapton. The popular legend goes that Johnson sold his soul to the Devil at the #Crossroads in exchange for musical success. Like #Faust before him, his bargain resulted in a brief and bright flash, but a mysterious end. He became the founding member of the #27Club after a seven-month career. However brief his moment, his mythology lived on, and continues to influence musicians today, largely through enormous impact he had on #TheBlues, #RnB, and #RockAndRoll, and the standards he introduced like #CrossRoadBlues, #DustMyBroom, and #SweetHomeChicago. His legacy lives on in every skillful guitarist, blues shouter, soulful moaner, and rock star, and was particularly pronounced in the following two Kings. #AlbertKing, born Nelson, was known as the #VelvetBulldozer for his smooth vocal and his enormous stature. #JimiHendrix was in awe of King’s guitar skills and the latter claims he taught the former everything he knew. Yesterday was Blues music pioneer, Robert Johnson’s birthday. Robert Johnson, born around May 8, 1911, in Hazlehurst, MS, was a pioneering blues musician whose impact on the genre was paramount. Growing up in poverty under the care of his mother, Robert Johnson faced significant challenges, particularly in the racially segregated South, where discrimination was pervasive.Despite this, he displayed a remarkable talent for music from a young age. His musical career began in the early 1930s when he started performing at juke joints and street corners around the Mississippi Delta. He developed his skills as a guitarist and singer, captivating audiences with his raw emotion and distinctive style. In 1936 & 1937, he recorded a total of 29 songs in two recording sessions in San Antonio and Dallas, TX. These recordings, which include classics like “Cross Road Blues,” “Sweet Home Chicago,” and “Love in Vain,” showcase his virtuosity as a guitarist and his haunting vocal delivery. It was Robert Johnson's birthday yesterday. I meant to post about it but had a Hellhound on my trail. I'm an old fan and I don't believe Robert Johnson actually made a faustian pact. What actually happened is his wife died in childbirth and after losing his wife/child, he lost his patience with religion and began to openly curse God and wrote several clever, extremely haunting, songs about the Devil and other dark subjects. Kind hearted women who study evil all the time. I can play a lot of #RobertJohnson songs. They are fun but don't strike me as the sort of compositions one would write if they had just been touched by .. something. His songs rely heavily on the same little blues shuffles and walkbacks. Many of the melodies sound nearly the same with varying time signatures. Robert Johnson is a classic. If Mississippi John Hurt is the sweet old grandfather of blues maybe Robert Johnson is the angsty 20 something. His life and death were certainly the stuff that spawns legends but I think Robert Johnson just got better at guitar on his own. That isn't to say he didn't have his share of demons.

Anderson and she is in her late 90s and currently resides in Amherst, Massachusetts. More legends than you can shake a slide at - Lockwood told me a couple of stories long ago that I believe we’ll save for the doc - and the embodiment of a thing that didn’t really develop until later. But for all that, Robert Johnson - and it can be easy to forget this, what with the cross-roads and all - was a person. And if we mean to take all of this #beyondthecrossroads (and we do: well beyond) we still honor the cat and the immensity, the unrepeatability of his creative imagination.
