Good Mourning, Thursday! We know the way we grieve is influenced by intergenerational stories that get passed down. Some cultures see grief as a sacred and holy practice that honors their ancestors and traditions. Grieving is a birthright and a way to send blessings to those they love. Others see it as something to mask and suppress in public and privately lament at home. Not only does the way we grieve get passed down, but also what we grieve. We come from a lineage of war, disease, genocide and enslaved people. These traumatic experiences get woven into our DNA and gets expressed both genetically and energetically. We also come from a lineage of love, village mentality, strength & perseverance, this gets expressed genetically & energetically too. My Finnish people call this Sisu-a way of being in the midst of hardship. Do an energetic audit of your grief: ✨ How did I learn to grieve as a child? What messages did I receive (even non-verbal speaks loudly). ✨ What did my grandparents and great grandparents live through? ✨ How have these themes played a part in my life, even though I have never lived through those experiences? ✨ Create a loss line (a chronological list of events of losses in your lifetime) include small, medium, large and ambiguous losses. ✨ Begin to discern what is mine to grieve and what have I inherited from my ancestors? ✨ Send your ancestors blessings and gratitude. Remembering my partners grandmother, the ancestor to my children - Yang Yi. Her life story lives on with our family. We lost her due to Covid complications at 103. Our children will learn about grandma's love for literature, writing, and art. How she fought against Japanese imperialism and occupation operating an underground newspaper for the people. My partners childhood home belonging to his grandmother, now turned into a museum. One day we hope to bring our children to grandma's museum home to learn about the stories of their great-grandmother. It's different for my side of the family, especially when I don't know the stories. Memories was too painful for my grandmother, she never shared about her life, family or how she lived. She crossed over from North Korea on her own during the Korean War. As a person of mixed ancestry I understand what makes it difficult for so many of us to connect. There’s so much pain, violence, and shame attached to the people of our past. 🕯️I remember being afraid of them because I am Queer and didn’t think they’d like that. 🕯️Because I am mixed and didn’t want the Black and Indigenous people to hate me because I am European, or to endure racism from the Europeans because I am Black. 🕯️I also have issues with my living family and just thought the ancestors would be the same. But thru my ancestor practice I have connected with the ancestors who see me and love me for who I am. I have found a way to relate to my living family to heal and move forward. I have connected to people who are not related to me by blood but are part of my spiritual lineage and that was a HUGE gift. It helped me remember more of who I am and what I’m here for. In a session with me, you probably won’t meet your grandpa or your cousin or even your great great grandmother. But you very well meet someone much older, who is not on your family tree, who was removed from record. Or who knows your spirit and needs to connect you to the deeper truth of you. But they are all your ancestors and it is all in love. It's common for ts to feel super weird at first. A lot of people feel like they look crazy honoring their ancestors like this. But if it's any consolation, more people are doing all of this than you think and a vast majority of them are feeling the exact say way lmao Still, the pros outweigh the cons. The more you honor your ancestors, the better they can make your life. The closer you can get to both them and your living family. And it's not like you have to do this all the time. Like once a month is gucci. It's okay too if you don't know what your peoples liked to eat. Plenty of people are adopted or just otherwise estranged from their family. Just make something you know you make well. You'll know if they like it or not by how it looks the following day. If it's dried out but not moldy or anything, they enjoyed it ! If it's dry and moldy, a negative spirit had a feast w it. If it's wet/juicy and moldy, there's just way too much negative energy in your home and your peoples can't even get to it. New sheep corral, plants growing with the new led grow lights (these tomatoes look so much better than with our old lights), Zoe looking spicy as usual, Tucker chilling while we were building, Smokey the ram taking a scratch, T Bone and her heifer calf, Rex's ears just visible on top of the hay, and the new reusable seed pots. Welcome to the evening arrti ceremony at the Har ki Puri Ghat in Haridwar. 10s of thousands of pilgrims from around India come here - often whole villages - for this ceremony. Often, this is a once in a lifetime visit, to be where the first drop of nectar dropped to the earth by the gods. We had a personal blessing to all of our ancestors in the very small temple where that nectar dropped - there was an whirrling energy within this space that I have never encountered before. Another speechless moment for all of us. Whole families and villages have their dip in the Ganges at this place before the ceremony and then thousands of people chanting to the sacred Ganges together. There is a subtle indoctrination in society that says happiness isn't possible... do you agree? I know happiness, joy, peace and bliss is possible, but it is on the other side of grief. Yet, our society keeps encouraging us to numb our pain with entertainment and short term pleasures. Somebody is making a lot of money from our addictions, and the total identification with our egos... Happiness is at the core of our true self, our soul. ✨️ Labeling emotional pain as "mental health problems" is a big mistake because our psychological issues do not originate in the brain, or the mind. Our pain comes from trauma. Very simply put, trauma is something something that our emotions could not handle in the moment. Trauma causes a disconnect from the body in order to help us survive. The problem is that so far, we haven't had the proper tools to regulate the nervous system, and labeling it "mental problems" adds to the confusion and it causes a further disconnect from the body. When we believe there is simply something wrong with our mind, we lose the opportunity to get in touch with our emotions. We even use medications which aim to suppress feelings. ✨️ Many of us have heard the expression "The only way is through". There is a very deep peace knowing that you can handle your own inner darkness and pain. Knowing you find joy at the core of your being, and stop desperately seeking it from the outside. Knowing that you can take care of yourself. Happiness comes from a place of great pleasure, yet it's different because you are not seeking pleasure from a sense of chronic lack, or from addiction. If we are mistaking pleasure for happiness... ...life becomes an unsatiable drive towards pleasure that never stops. ✨️ When we integrate the darkness and pain we can even come to a point of gratefulness for everything that we have experienced. Your happiness increases because it is much easier to be very happy for the smallest things. Gradually, you become present in the moment again. The moment feels rich. I wrote “Becoming a Good Relative: Calling White Settlers Toward Truth, Healing, and Repair” because my ancestors asked me to. Writing the book has been a communal endeavor of healing and truth-seeking. I say “becoming” a good relative because it takes ongoing effort to do the work of building the right relationship and making personal reparations. I have chosen to be with my pain and with my rage. That still sometimes means that I am completely immobilized for a while. I check in with myself and then I wonder how am I supposed to deal with this? This feeling seems too big for my body to even hold? Is my heart really disintegrating into pieces? It hurts. ✨️ But it doesn't hurt as much as it used to. The reason why is that I don't have a big, dark, criticising voice inside that judges everything about me. A voice who is terrified of any emotion. It doesn't mean I never judge myself, but I don't let it hang on to me like...a cobweb of lies. That makes me free to feel my emotions to the best of my ability. That means I am able to let go. And I know now that I can't let go from my mind. It is only my body that can let go and it's only my emotions that hold the key to my resistance. ✨️ Now I sometimes feel anger and sadness and I feel happy at the same time because I know it's temporary and I know and trust my body to do what it needs to do. I also pray daily to the divine both outside of me and inside and I feel supported. And I feel that the Goddess it's not a faint archetype or a dead myth. She is living within me. It is possible to heal. The critical voice is your own suppressed darkness and your emotions that are trying to talk with you. Listen. ✨️ The critical voice is a fragmented part of you, a part of your inner child- selves. It's trying to protect you, in ways that don't serve you anymore. The essence is: the darkness you are running from, you will see in others. But the darkness is still you. It's a broken piece of you inside an emotion you weren't able to hold. As a person of mixed ancestry I understand what makes it difficult for so many of us to connect. There’s so much pain, violence, and shame attached to the people of our past. 🕯️I remember being afraid of them because I am Queer and didn’t think they’d like that. 🕯️Because I am mixed and didn’t want the Black and Indigenous people to hate me because I am European, or to endure racism from the Europeans because I am Black. 🕯️I also have issues with my living family and just thought the ancestors would be the same. But thru my ancestor practice I have connected with the ancestors who see me and love me for who I am. I have found a way to relate to my living family to heal and move forward. I have connected to people who are not related to me by blood but are part of my spiritual lineage and that was a HUGE gift. It helped me remember more of who I am and what I’m here for. In a session with me, you probably won’t meet your grandpa or your cousin or even your great great grandmother. But you very well meet someone much older, who is not on your family tree, who was removed from record. Or who knows your spirit and needs to connect you to the deeper truth of you. In 6 weeks I will be traveling over the oceans to remember my truest nature. To connect to my lineage, my blood and the land of my ancestors. To walk the halls they walked. To follow their journey 223 years later that others have forgotten. No one in my family has gone back for 223 years!!! ~ Our ancestors knew the magic in which they held. They danced in rituals to regulate emotional & psychical wellbeing. They knew to release stored emotions they must dance in both the light & the dark of life. The only way through was the balance of all ~ At present time, cosmic energies are flooding strongly. Last week I have been submerged in beautiful teachings… three days of connecting with the lineage of men and women who came before us. Our lineage that can be at the root of the problems we experience, as well as that it holds the wisdom for our healing. Introducing Mirjam Mirjam grew up in Deventer, studied in Amsterdam, lived in West Africa, Ibiza and Costa Rica and is now back in the Netherlands.
