When I was 14 yrs old, my mum underwent knee surgery. It was supposed to heal her, but she came out worse than when she went in. Since that day 20 yrs ago, she has walked only with crutches. Now, prior to her operation, I had convinced myself that I too was destined for a similar fate as my mum, if not worse. You see, for years I had been experiencing popping knees. Whenever I bent down, they would crack really loudly. At the time, I didn’t know the these were harmless bubbles of trapped air around my joints, instead, I was convinced there was a problem. No one I knew could explain it, and these were the days before the internet so I couldn’t just google it, and so I was left to draw my own conclusions. Which was, that I was going to end up in a wheelchair when I grew older. This may sound extreme, but the 14 yr old me believed it. And I would repeat this belief to myself, over and over again for years. In hindsight, this was obviously a coping mechanism my mind had conjured up, preparing me for the worst possible scenario. Fast forward 20 yrs, I’m now 44, and last year I started experiencing knee and elbow pain (almost identical parallels to my mother, who was 40 at the time of her operation). I put it down to muscle deterioration and waring of the joints, something that is common amongst women my age. I did not associate it with this old fear that I once held. Why would I? After all, over the past 20 yrs, my knee popping has subsided, and I have always been physically strong and healthy. I was also under the impression that I had released my belief that I was destined to endure the same fate, or worse, as my mum. Well, apparently I had not! A few months ago, I went to see an Integrated Healer, not for anything in particular, but more out of the curiosity.
