ERP would tell us that we have to sit in the uncertainty that we could “possibly” harm our child. But can I tell you something? Now that I’ve learned I-CBT, used it in my own therapy for my OCD, and am a mom myself I feel uncomfy and unfair telling a mama that she just has to say “maybe” to that thought. this is where I -CBT comes in— we learn how to trust our senses, our common sense, and our true self, rather than the doubts OCD tries to convince us of…. …while also reminding ourselves that intrusive thoughts are not random. They go directly against our true self and are usually about something we fear about becoming. When the weight of the world feels heavy, and you’re tempted to surrender to exhaustion, doubt, and despair, remember: within every challenge lies an opportunity for growth. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed by the pressure to change, to doubt our worthiness, and to question our capabilities. But in these moments, we’re called to embrace the transformative power of self-compassion, forgiveness, and love. From my own journey of self-healing and discovery, I’ve learned that these moments of darkness are often our greatest teachers. They remind us of our resilience, our strength, and our capacity for growth. So, even when it feels like the world is closing in around you, know that you are not alone. I see you. I believe in you. And I’m here to cheer you on every step of the way. You might wonder, “But Serge, I just want to live a normal life and navigate through it without feeling constantly burdened. What exactly are you talking about?” I get it. The concept of being a “normal” person can vary greatly from one individual to another. And yes, I understand that some of the things I talk about—like love, forgiveness, compassion, and accepting yourself and the world around you—can seem abstract at first glance. But here’s something to consider: When do you decide to stop suffering? When do you choose to stop tearing yourself apart? 👋 Hey, there fellow HSPs! Let’s talk self-care for burnout! Why? Because we’re more prone to it than others. 🤪 🔥 Burnout can lead us to feeling as if we can’t really do anything to make the impacts we want. This is why completing a task is beneficial. It shows your brain you’re capable 💪 and gives you a little boost. 🛝 Play is one of the great healers. Most of us are too busy to do it or feel too ridiculous. Play though is the opposite of the stress cycle. You can’t be in 🥋 fight or 🏃🏻‍♀️ flight at the same time as play. You may not feel the impact right away when you’re so depleted but it helps to remove the depletion and gets you out of the red 🔴 back into the green 🟢 🔗 Connecting with loved ones is vital to rejuvenating our nervous system. You can get the support you need and support the people you care about in turn. You can also just have a good time enjoying good company. 🌸 If you’re struggling with anxiety, it’s helpful to check whether your anxiety could be fuelled by one of these lifestyle factors. ☕️ While that cup of tea or coffee may give us a quick pick-me-up, excessive caffeine intake can sometimes rev up our nervous system, leading to feelings of restlessness and anxiety. Studies have shown that high doses of caffeine can increase anxiety levels. ☕️ 🍷 Although a glass of wine or two may seem like a good way to unwind, alcohol can disrupt the delicate balance of neurotransmitters in our brains. Studies suggest that alcohol can interfere with the production of serotonin and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), both of which play a crucial role in regulating mood, and it can impact sleep. 💤 Sleep deprivation not only leaves us feeling groggy and unfocused but also increases levels of the stress hormone cortisol which can cause you to feel more anxious. Additionally, research has shown that lack of sleep can heighten the activity in the amygdala, the part of our brain responsible for processing emotions, leading to heightened anxiety responses. 📱 While social media can be a way to stay connected, it is often a source of comparison and self-doubt, fuelling anxiety. Be mindful of your screen time and curate your online experience to focus on positive and uplifting content that boosts your spirit. 🚶‍♀️ Movement is not just essential for our physical health but also for our mental well-being. Lack of regular physical activity can result in increased levels of stress hormones and reduced release of feel-good endorphins. Find joy in movement, whether it's dancing, yoga, or simply taking a walk in nature – your body and mind will thank you. 🤝 Whilst we all need some level of alone time, a lack of social connection can create feelings of isolation and heighten anxiety levels. Social support can act as a buffer against psychological distress. Making time for genuine connections, engaging in heartfelt conversations, and creating your support network is vitally important. Anxiety is SO much more than just a mental health issue. 🙅‍♀️ The truth is that anxiety is a multifaceted condition. To view it solely as a brain issue or a neurotransmitter deficiency and throw anti-anxiety pills at it is to miss the sprawling complexity of its roots. Yes, neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and GABA play a major role in how we feel, their imbalances causing feelings of unease, but these effects extend beyond the brain into the enteric nervous system residing in the gut. 👉 This is where the gut-brain axis also comes in. 👈 Bidirectional communication between the gut and brain involves the gut microbiota—bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. Dysbiosis, a disruption in gut microbiota, correlates with anxiety, perpetuating a cycle of gut-brain disharmony exacerbated by stress-induced alterations in gut function. Then we have the way it affects almost every other system in the body… 👀 ➡️ Stress prompts the release of cortisol and adrenaline ➡️ This impacts not only the brain but also cardiovascular, respiratory, GI, and immune systems. ➡️ Chronic stress then disturbs hormone levels, perpetuating anxiety-related health repercussions. Lastly, when anxiety takes hold, our autonomic nervous system (ANS), responsible for managing things like heart rate and digestion without our conscious effort, can also go awry. This means that our "fight or flight" response gets stronger, while the "rest and digest" side weakens, making us feel more physically on edge and worsening our anxiety. 📌 The bottom line: anxiety isn't just a problem confined to the brain, it involves the intricate interplay of multiple systems throughout the body and must be addressed as such, rather than simply reaching for anti-anxiety medication as a quick fix. I want to share how my #emotionalsuportdog helps me on a daily basis. During the day she comes to work with me and provides me confirm and cuddles. Helping reduce my anxiety and stress when needed. She even helps me on the bus by laying near my feet! At night I can have trouble sleeping but Zoe snuggles right up against me to provide comfort. In general she just knows exactly what I need and I feel lucky to have her in my life. Ps.
