š§š§Over Coming Those Fearsš§š§ Fears can challenge us, put obstacles in our way and even block/stop us from achieving our goals. We all have fears, being aware of how we (our body) responds to these can help us overcome these fears over time. I have been trying to get over mine ā¦ Heights and the fear of falling This is something that has definitely got worse with age. In my very early 20s, I did a bungee jump and despite going well, this fear has grown and it has gradually got worse. It has started to get in the way of our lifestyle which is filled with being outdoors, cliff top coastal walks, getting to fishing marks or hidden beach or beauty spots. I donāt want this fear to get the better of me and as a mum to my boys, I want them to see their mum as someone that doesnāt let fear control her! So following several panic attacks on cliffsides or cliff tops, where luckily Craig (my partner) has been able to work with me to safely get me to and from places. I decided I would try and get on top of it before it does that to me! Today we went climbing and bouldering at @rockandrapid and worked with 2 awesome instructors who helped me not only gain those skills but they also helped me work some things out which will help me move forward in my journey. Being aware of the anxiety fear causes within your body, what you can do to pre empt and calm down as soon as possible. The mental block and lack of confidence/faith in self to be able to do something. Techniques that work best to decrease these fears and slowly put yourself out of your comfort zone. For me itāll be a few more bouldering visits to increase confidence and techniques and train my body and calming methods to decrease those auto bodily responses to the fear. There have been times, Iāll admit, when the yogic and meditation fixation on breath has seemed perplexing. We all breathe. Being told to breathe sometimes feels a little like stating the obvious. On the other hand, I have felt the benefits of conscious breathing often enough not to care if itās mumbo-jumbo. James Nestorās book Breath ā The New Science of a Lost Art somewhat bridges the gap between my scepticism and my experience. He explores the science of breath and breathing against the backdrop of a beginnerās course in Sudarshan Kriya recommended by his doctor because of his general ill health. Nestor starts off unengaged until suddenly he experiences something profound. So profound, he goes on a yearsā long quest to work out what happened to him that day. His findings (the Notes section in the book runs to almost 40 pages) is what he presents the reader in a book that is gently entertaining, highly readable and a good starting point if breathing is something youāve wanted to think about ā or do ā more deeply. The odd thing that happened while reading this book (which, as you can see, has been read half to death by half the family) was that I was constantly holding my breath or breathing funny or gasping while reading. Iāve never thought about breathing so much in my life. I became aware of how lucky I am not to be a mouth breather, but the greatest insight was into why breathing deep into your lungs has a calming effect. Itās physiological, not psychological. You donāt calm down because of mind tricks; deep breathing literally switches on the parasympathetic nervous system. That was quite a wow moment. Iāve recommended the book to several people who are interested in health or have specific health issues. Itās a book for snorers and snorters, mouth-breathers and marathon runners, allergy and anxiety sufferers. We learn to reveal the parts of ourselves that need light, compassion, attention, and tender care so healing can take place. Since horses are masters of being fully present, we can learn what that means and how it feels in our minds and bodies. Thought recognition is a mental process where you acknowledge your own thoughts, and the emotions and sensations connected to them. Observe your thoughts without judgement: thoughts are just thoughts, and not necessarily truths or realities. You donāt have to be scared of them, or get anxious because of them. If you are feeling anxious at work, you must be thinking something that makes you anxious and that feeling must be controlling you. Just that. Donāt try to find or make up the source of your anxiety. Focus your attention on the feeling of anxiety, the place in your body where you feel tension. Be aware of that sensation and notice how it fades away. Then you are set in a mental space of calm and tranquility where your own intuition guides you to the best next step.
