WHITNEY’S STORY 2/8: “Sometimes I just get really tired of having to be brave, you know? Sometimes I just don’t want to be brave. I just want to curl up in my bed and hide away from the world. When my son was first diagnosed with diabetes, it was right after my mom died. I told myself, I would grieve once I settled her estate. Two weeks after I settled her estate, he was diagnosed. It felt like when you’re diving under waves in the ocean and you come up and there’s the next huge one and you can barely catch your breath, and then you gotta dive back down. It was just super overwhelming. And about three months into it, I was falling apart, and my husband was going away on a work trip. I was not ready to handle our son’s diabetes alone. I am usually pretty resilient, but I was not okay. Like, really not fine. And so what I did to force myself into bravery and all the stuff I wasn’t prepared for – I took my son to Hawaii. I felt like it was going to be hard no matter what. It was going to be hard dealing with diabetes on my own, so I might as well be in paradise. I had just received some money owed to me, which made the trip possible. It was also a message to myself, like, ‘YOU can do this.’ And trust me, I was NOT sure I could do it AT ALL. But I was like, ‘You have to. You have to be brave enough to do this, and you have to be brave enough to do it so that your son can see that HE can do it.’ If I don’t believe it, then he won’t, right? So I just forced myself. It was like jumping off the high dive and just being like, ‘Oh my God. Okay. I hope the universe catches me.’” 2/8

Here's a secret, May is a crazy month, and a large majority of my clients are coming in talking about how busy and overwhelmed they are right now. Just breathe. And breathe again. ✨Grab some paper, and a pen, and start listing all of the things that are causing your freak out. When you think you're finished, take another breath and see if anything else comes to you. If so keep writing. ✨Look at the list and cross off anything that is out of your control. Here is an some example, "I'm worried that it will rain on prom." ✨Come up with a plan of attack for the things on your list that are in your control and figure out how you want to tackle each one. WHITNEY’S STORY 1/8​: ​​“If I give him too much, he could slip into a coma and die. If I give him too little, his organs will fail. He could go blind. We’re dealing with life and death choices on a daily basis. It’s exhausting. One time early on when we were learning how to dilute insulin, I said to a nurse: ‘I would’ve gone to med school if I knew I was gonna be doing this.’ And she goes, ‘Oh no, this is highly specialized. Doctors don’t know how to do this.’ We were given a hotline number to call when it’s really bad. And every time they say the same thing: ‘We just don’t know – diabetes is a mysterious disease.’ Basically what they tell you is to ‘do the best you can – try and figure out your kid like a science experiment.’ I struggled with anxiety before my son even existed. Monitoring his diabetes is like putting lighter fluid on my anxiety. Think about when you drive a long distance, in traffic, somewhere you’ve never been before, and it’s just you. Okay. Then you add your child. So now you have another level of concern, of safety or protection, right? And then on top of it, I have a third layer, where I’m having to monitor and manage his blood sugars while I’m driving that long distance. So if he’s dropping low suddenly, and we’re merging onto the 110 freeway, I’m reaching for apple juice and telling him to take this much – or grabbing his kit and saying, ‘I need you to test yourself because I know you’re dropping, but I don’t know how much.’ It’s almost like he’s possessed. My beloved child is in there, but this thing is running the show – and I’m constantly having to battle with it. All day, every day. It’s so intense.” 1/8

This is something I have been trying to remind myself, I am someone who tends to over explain everything, especially if it's something I am saying no to, it's part of my anxiety; I am realising that I get my validation from others not through myself and what I really want to learn is that I don't need to explain why I don't want to do something, I can just say no and save the energy. When anxiety is running high, seemingly simple tasks like returning a text, running an errand, or sitting still can feel impossible to face. ​​​​​​​​⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ​​​​​​​​⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you struggle with this you know how frustrating it can be, especially when your inner critic chimes in with, “what's wrong with you? It’s so simple, you should be able to just do it.” 🙃​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 💭How can you overcome this?​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1. First, start by identifying your "impossible tasks".​​​​​​​​⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When your anxiety is high, what tasks feel impossible or challenging to do? Maybe it’s going to the grocery store or making a call. Whatever it is, get curious about why that task feels impossible and how the anxiety around it shows up in you.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2. Next, decide how important each task is and which tasks can be outsourced. ​​​​​​​​Which tasks feel challenging but that you would like to do? Which tasks feel challenging that you would not like to do? Decide where you would like to spend your energy, and where you need support. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3. Last, slow down and be kind to yourself. ​​​​​​​​⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Being a human is not easy! My passion for mental health and nutrition is deeply personal 💛 Experiencing issues with my weight and bullying from an early age rocked my self-esteem. I took this into my teenage years and ultimately developed depression. After making the decision to work on my dependence on food and shedding some weight, I would say I went into remission for my depression. I no longer felt unmotivated, isolated and foggy every day. But unfortunately my unhappiness with my body continued as it does for many people and I became hooked on calorie counting. Even when underweight and far beyond my “goal weight”, I was unhappy. I was under-eating, avoiding fats, drinking sugar-free soft drinks daily, cravings food constantly, always hungry, anxious, and depriving myself of the joy of food. After stopping counting calories, I struggled with my self-esteem and confidence, and it took some time before I finally sought help. I’ve been up and down with my relationship with food and my mental health over the years but it took me discovering my passion for nutrition and learning all I could about the intricate connection between my mind and body to finally understand my journey. Today, my mental health isn’t perfect - I’m human after all. But I’ve learned what works for me and now have a foundation of healthy food, knowledge, empowerment and self-love to help me on my path. And I can honestly say, I’m much happier now! Why do I do what I do? When emotions take over it can feel like you don’t have any control over your reactions, thoughts or behaviours. Amygdala hijack is your emotional response to stress which involves two parts of the brain; the amygdala & cerebral cortex. The amygdala is part of the limbic system with is responsible for emotional & behavioural responses, which is highly connected to the autonomic nervous system. The Cerebral Cortex regulates higher functions like reasoning, thinking, decision making & planning. In the event of perceived threat, the amygdala jumps to action, reacting with fight/flight response. Depending on your past experiences, trauma and levels of stress, your cerebral cortex helps you determine whether the danger is real and/or immediate & helps you decide what to do in response to danger. If your nervous system is dysregulated & sensItive due to your past life experiences, your reaction to perceived threats is heightened in order to keep you safe. The connection to the cerebral cortex is weaker making it difficult to emotionally regulate or think rationally when faced with triggers or challenges. ⁠⁠⁠ If your nervous system is over-active or dysregulated, then your sympathetic system can get ‘stuck’ on or triggered easily. By connecting with your body & regulating your nervous system, you can use ‘bottom-up’ techniques to calm yourself back down & allowing higher functioning in the brain to come back online. ⁠⁠⁠ Have you ever felt like your logical/rational brain has been ‘offline’ when you’re activated? From lifestyle factors to environmental stressors, understanding the holistic root causes of anxiety is crucial for developing effective treatment strategies that address the underlying issues rather than simply treating the symptoms. Here are some of the most common root causes of anxiety: 🔸Nutrient deficiencies Our bodies rely on a complex interplay of nutrients to maintain good health. This means that deficiencies in certain nutrients, such as magnesium and vitamin B12, can contribute to anxiety. 🔸Chronic stress Chronic stress can lead to imbalances in the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline, as well as raise levels of inflammation, both of which can contribute to anxiety. 🔸Gut problems Research has shown that imbalances in the gut microbiome can impact the gut-brain axis and contribute to the development of anxiety. 🔸Unhealthy diet An unhealthy diet can have a significant impact on mental health and has been linked to an increased risk of anxiety and other mood disorders. 🔸Environmental toxins Exposure to toxins such as heavy metals, pesticides, and chemicals can cause chronic inflammation and contribute to anxiety. 🔸Blood sugar / hormonal imbalances Fluctuations in blood sugar levels can trigger anxiety in some individuals, and imbalances in hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone can also contribute to anxiety.
