205 days sober from alcohol! Feeling better than I can ever remember. Through my mental health journey and work I have found strength and resiliency. I am no longer masking my feelings with alcohol. By not giving up on myself I've reached new heights and this is just the beginning. I got a 2nd chance on life and I'm not wasting it. I'm am truly blessed to have a wonderful partner who never gave up on me and loved me unconditionally even during bleak times. Today I have more love and kindness in my heart than ever before. I have more understanding of myself which in turn has given me better understanding of the world and those around me. It's easier to determine what deserves your time and energy when you're head is clear. I hope you all have a spectacular weekend. I hope that if you're struggling that you will get help and do the work so you also can change your life and be here longer and stronger than you ever imagined. #thatmetalguy1983 #chubbyhubbyfitness #thatmentalhealthguy1983 #mentalhealth #mentalhealthadvocate #selfcare #mentalhealthsurvivor #selfbelief #mentalhealthwarrior #mensmentalhealth #mentalhealthfighter #depression #panicdisorder #panicattacks #stress #itsoknottobeok

Mental health is equally important as physical health! There are so many people out there that can barely make it through the day and it feels like mental health sometimes gets ignored. ⁣ I myself have panic attacks, severe anxiety to where at one point I was agoraphobic and didn’t leave my house for a year. Tons of depression, I have bipolar disorder, OCD, and ADD. It’s a lot to manage. I’m stressed all the time…not good for my mental health. ⁣ Please don’t judge and be kind to everyone, even if they are a little off. Offer support if you can or an open ear so your loved one suffering feels understood and validated. Please never say “just snap out of it”. “Go read Xyz book”, etc. trust me. We have tried most everything. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #mentalhealthawareness #bipolar #agoraphobia #anxiety #panicattacks #panicdisorder #ocd #add #bekind #spreadawareness

Life. 🙏🏽☘️✈️🏡 I could write an essay here but I'll keep it short. Life is about small simple pleasures, waking up with no anxiety or fear in your mind and body, a restful sleep , the morning up of tea listening to the birds out your back garden, spending time with good friends and building those connections, nature and plenty of it , a loving partner if you have one, watching your kids grow if you have them. And FAMILY. I am very blessed for my family. As I said. I'll keep it simple. I never thought I'd be where I am in life now. And I am very blessed and grateful for these last five years I've done more with my life in a short few years than I'd ever thought I'd do in a lifetime. Recovery from anxiety "disorders" and 100% possible and stay clear of anyone or anything that tells you otherwise. ❤️🏡🙏🏽 #frompanictoparis #anxietycoach #anxiety #anxietyrecovery #panic #panicattack #panicattacks #panicdisorder #agoraphobia #agoraphobiarecovery #ocd #healthanxiety #monophobia #trauma #anxious #anxiete #socialanxiety

Panic attacks are episodes of intense fear that trigger severe physical reactions in situations where there appears to be no real danger, but our mind and body beg to differ. There is hope in biblical counseling, medication, diet and exercise, and other tools to navigate these attacks — and however He may work through doctors, counselors and friends around us, we know God is our ultimate source of help (Psalm 121:1-3). In Psalm 94, the psalmist also experienced anxiety. He lamented about how the wicked persecuted God’s people with murderous words and actions: “How long will the wicked rejoice in triumph?” (Psalm 94:3, AMP). But he also resolved to shift his thinking and remember that God would “grant him [power to calm himself and find] peace in the days of adversity” (Psalm 94:13, AMP). And he declared,“When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your comforts delight me” (Psalm 94:19). When my anxiety amplifies, how could I seek God’s comfort and trust Him to give me the power to calm myself and find peace? Second Corinthians 1:3-5 says the “God of all comfort … comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God” (ESV). I remember the first time I courageously shared my struggles with other believers. As they listened with empathy and acceptance, my anxieties lessened and were replaced with God’s comfort. As a result, others began sharing their struggles, too, and God’s comfort began to heal us. There is a concept in mental health counseling known as “empathetic witness” — the idea that sharing our pain with someone who really listens is deeply healing. When anxiety creeps into our hearts, minds and bodies, the enemy wants to shame us into silence and keep us from connecting with other believers — but we are created for community by a relational God. In our with-ness, God is with us. - @justjodiharris How have you received God’s comfort through His people? It can feel so scary and irresponsible to take bets - but isn't that kind of what we do every day? Not like a 50/50 bet, but the kind of bet where I don't know what the possibilities are but I'm not going to try to figure it out because I've got stuff to do and I can't possibly figure that out... Adults can experience separation anxiety, although it is more common in children. It’s normal to be concerned about the well-being of loved ones, although people with adult separation anxiety disorder experience high levels of anxiety, and sometimes even panic attacks when loved ones are out of reach. People with this disorder may withdraw themselves socially, or have difficulty concentrating when away from loved ones. In parents, the disorder can lead to strict, over-involved parenting. 💥 Neuroscientists have discovered a new pathway in the brain that is responsible for panic-like behaviors. The pathway, called PACAPPBL→DR, involves neurons in the lateral parabrachial nucleus (PBL) that produce pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP). Activation of these neurons leads to panic-like responses in mice, while inhibition reduces panic. Researchers believe that understanding and targeting this pathway could lead to the development of new therapies for panic disorder. This study sheds light on the complex neural mechanisms underlying fear, anxiety, and panic, and opens up new possibilities for treatment. ⭕ Salk Institute for Biological Studies #panicdisorder #neuroscience #fearresponse #brainpathways #therapeutictargets #anxietytreatment #mentalhealth #research #neuralcircuits #panicattacks

❤️‍🩹 * FULLY UNFILTERED & UNEDITED * Behind all the cutesy holibobs pics & pretty lil’ outfits, this is how I look right now- now that I’m back home🥲 Of all places, the sun really does attack my face!! It’s so dry, burnt, itchy & painful - and that’s after me having factor 50 sunscreen on!!🧴🙈 Years ago I suffered badly from eczema and I really don’t think my skin has ever been as tolerant or the same since! My face can’t stand any strong UV rays at all! I would get burnt on a half-sunny day here in Northern Ireland, too🥴 Anyways, the aim of this post is to point out that not every ‘nice’ picture you see on Instagram (or other social platforms), is reality! Yes, I am very happy and looked more than joyful on holidays, but really: - I was conscious of how I looked in my bikini. - I was embarrassed of my stretch marks. - I didn’t want anyone to look closely at my face because of how irritated it was. - I had 2/3 panic attacks. - I was utterly drained with the heat, so I took a siesta on most days. - I didn’t eat much over the whole holiday, because I’m a plain eater and like to stick to things I know & love. But, I’m not beating myself up about my feelings because.. it’s normal & totally OKAY to feel all those types of ways. They don’t make you (or me) look silly, seem weird, or look stupid. What do they show? They show that we are all HUMAN. They show we all have our own insecurities and things we overthink about. But, by pushing ourselves to embrace how we look and who we are as individuals, we can start to overcome those insecurities, and that’s what I did on my holibobs… EMBRACED MY OWN BODY🥰 Never be ashamed of: yourself, how you look, how you dress, how you act, or how you feel. Welcome “negative emotions” during meditation and your perspective will soon shift. Via @mingyurrinpoche “At first, when my panic came, I said, ‘Hello, panic. Get out! I’m meditating.’ But, the panic would become stronger and louder. I was disappointed. I thought meditation was supposed to help my panic, but it didn’t help. So, I went back to my father and told him about my disappointing experience with meditation. My father said, ‘Don’t say ‘Get out!’ to panic. You must welcome the panic. During meditation, panic doesn’t have to become an obstacle. Panic is okay; no panic is okay.’ I thought ‘Wow, interesting.’ So then I changed my style of meditation a little bit. I began to say “welcome” to my panic. -an excerpt from Mingyur Rinpoche’s public talk “Meditation and Going Beyond Mindfulness: A Secular Perspective,” at the London School of Economics in 2018 Learn about Mingyur Rinpoche through: tergar.org #mingyurrinpoche #panicattacks #anxiety #depression #meditationforanxiety #tibetanmonk #secularpractice

Let’s talk about panic attacks…. 😨😵‍💫‼️🚨 Contrary to what stigma messages may send, panic attacks are very, VERY real. They’re also very common. They happen when the brain’s alarms go off in the brain, alerting the body that there’s danger, and therefore panic. You don’t “need a reason” to panic. Sometimes they just happen because the brains alarms are wired falsely, signaling a false alarm. Panic attacks are physiological responses to adrenaline. They can look differently for everyone and manifest differently in the body. Because there is a huge neurobiological compenenet to them, they be physically painful, making it difficult to breathe or sit still. When the fight, flight or freeze system is on override, sometimes it can literally feel like you’re dying. But if you’re struggling with panic attacks, remember this: You are not dying, and you are not going insane. You just had a massive burst of adrenaline and cortisol. Eventually, it will run its course. Your body knows how to process adrenaline. You can breathe. You did not lose control. You will be okay. Here are some tips to help get through those panicky moments when the stress hormones seem to take over the body. 🧠😬 #anxiety #psychoeducation #panicattacks #neurobiology #mentalhealthawareness #adrenaline #fightorflight

Understanding panic attacks is crucial for effectively managing and coping with them. Here's a breakdown: 1. **Definition**: A panic attack is a sudden onset of intense fear or discomfort that reaches a peak within minutes. It's often accompanied by physical symptoms such as a racing heartbeat, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea, dizziness, and feelings of impending doom or loss of control. 2. **Triggers**: Panic attacks can be triggered by various factors, including stress, specific phobias, traumatic events, major life changes, medical conditions, and substance abuse. 3. **Physiological Response**: During a panic attack, the body's fight-or-flight response is activated, releasing stress hormones like adrenaline. This triggers a cascade of physical sensations and symptoms, preparing the body to respond to perceived danger. 4. **Cognitive Factors**: Panic attacks often involve distorted thinking patterns. People experiencing panic attacks may catastrophize, interpreting physical sensations as signs of a life-threatening emergency. They may also fear losing control, going crazy, or dying. 5. **Duration and Frequency**: Panic attacks typically peak within minutes and last around 10 to 20 minutes, though some symptoms may linger. The frequency of panic attacks varies among individuals, ranging from isolated episodes to recurring attacks that occur frequently or even daily. 6. **Panic Disorder**: While isolated panic attacks are common and may not indicate an underlying disorder, recurrent, unexpected panic attacks coupled with persistent worry about future attacks may signal panic disorder. This condition can significantly impact daily functioning and may require treatment. 7. **Treatment**: Effective treatments for panic attacks and panic disorder include psychotherapy (such as cognitive-behavioral therapy), medication (like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or benzodiazepines), relaxation techniques, stress management strategies, and lifestyle changes. 8. **Seeking Support**: It's essential for individuals experiencing panic attacks to seek support from mental health professionals #panic #panicattacks #anxiety

Panic attacks are a very physical reaction to stresses in our lives. Simple lifestyle changes can help PREVENT a panic attack and if you are actually having a panic attack, there are simple steps you can take to physically calm you. Read on... 👉Panic attacks come on quickly and involve a very intense reaction. A panic attack can feel scary & extreme and is connected to the body’s “fight or flight response.” 👉Anxiety attacks come about differently and typically have a trigger, something stressful, overwhelming, or threatening. They can range from mild to severe and tend to slowly build where a panic attack can happen quite quickly. ✅If you find yourself experiencing anxiety or a panic attack, taking slow deep breaths can help. Your body will want to go into survival breathing (short and shallow breaths) so trying to slow your breathing will help. ✅Try to remind yourself that this moment will pass and try not to fight against it. ✅Some lifestyle changes can also help if you struggle with either of these issues. ✅Limit alcohol ✅Get some light exercise ✅Establish stress reducing habits 📞And don’t be afraid to consult a doctor or professional if you need help. Taking time to sit in the rain..well under the veranda! This is my calm. My time to reflect. I've been seeing a counsellor to help me through a few things that have led me to be here in northern ireland. An illness, death, accidental addiction(prescribed by doctors)trauma, panic and anxiety attacks, guilt of not being close to my mum. These things build up and if not dealt with as well as they can be can bring on so many feelings. Feelings and unexpressed emotions will manifest in the body and the mind. When we don't take care of these feelings overwhelm and anxiety are a few things which can happen. I see my body telling me things..sometimes small nudges sometimes big pushes to sit with these emotions. To really FEEL them. Moving here I wanted to create a sanctuary for a calm mind and healthy body. There are ups and downs with this...winter has always been a difficult time of year but speaking with my wonderful counsellor over the last 4 months has got me back on track...and I love cheese😂 Everyone's reasons are different for wanting a change in their lives. Everyones idea of how they want that change to be is different. Don't ever waiver from your path to calm and peace. Your story can inspire others to create there own. Be your own champion..no one else will do it for you. Create your own happiness...no one else will do that for you. It's You. Go create... #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #calm #createhealing #grief #trauma #panicattacks #anxiety #beyourownchampion #beyourownchampion

As a previous Navy Psychologist, one of my true passions is working with veterans as they navigate the often-complex mental health system. My time as a Navy Psychologist has enabled me to have a better understanding of this unique population. I am aware of the intricacies in navigating the VA and maintaining security clearances in careers after the military. Being trained as a Cognitive Behavioral therapist, I want to work on making real changes in the way people think and behave. Many situations can be improved while others are largely outside of our control or influence. Let's work on making changes to the things that can be improved and accepting the things that cannot. Maybe it’s time for you to find yourself by prioritizing your mental health. “THE FLOWER THAT BLOOMS IN ADVERSITY IS THE RAREST AND MOST BEAUTIFUL OF ALL.” - Walt Disney This quote makes me think about Chronic Illness Warriors. We face many & difficult circumstances. Many would give up and give in. But we struggle to survive. Through our difficulties we’ve become better human beings . I think that’s what makes each and every one of us a rare, beautiful, and valuable flowers. Do you agree? How are you feeling today? Sometimes, we might have sneaky thoughts that make us feel worse. Cognitive reframing helps us shift those thoughts to help us feel better. It takes practice, and it's best to work with a therapist to guide you. Here are a few examples on what this looks like. We all have thoughts like these sometimes, and they can hold us back. Save this post for a rainy thought day! I saw my GP yesterday to ask for a referral back into the mental health servives. She said she would, but warned me not to get my hopes up. Apparently since the service separated out, they're only taking on people with serious mental illnesses now, and she doubts they'd consider agoraphobia to be serious. So this will be a fun waiting game. I also saw a family member this morning and got the whole "your recovery can only come from you, you need to make an effort". As though I haven't been trying REALLY hard for seven years. It's only recently I've got really depressed and started to lose motivation to keep fighting. Not many people can understand how demoralising this is. My friends are hitting massive career goals and getting married. I'm over here like "I walked to the end of the road, holding my boyfriend's hand 🙃". This shit is difficult, but I'm doing my best 😓 #agoraphobia #anxiety #panicdisorder #panicattacks #depression

💚Client Case Study: Panic Attacks 💚 Have you ever suffered with a panic attack? If so, you will know how horrible, paralysing and frightening they can be. In fact, for many people, subsequent panic attacks happen because of the fear having a panic attack creates. Over our decade of helping and supporting people, panic attacks are something we have helped countless clients overcome. Recently, a client came to Lianne who had their first panic attack the day a loved one has unexpectedly died. Following that initial panic attack, the client was having them multiple times per day. They were incapacitating, frightening and making the grieving experience even worse. Over several sessions, Lianne initially worked with the client to help her understand why they were occurring and importantly give her proven tools to use to help reduce the severity of them. After a while, having these tools became enough for the clients panic attacks to stop altogether, the fear of them had gone. Lianne was then able to support the client through their grief without the horrible distraction of the panic attacks. If you suffer with panic attacks, please know that there are lots of tools available which you can use to regain control and ultimately stop them altogether. We can help you with that and offer in person and online therapy sessions to do just that using our integrative therapy approach. If you would like to chat about this confidentially, we offer a FREE 30 min online call to talk through some immediate solutions and look at longer term options. Just drop us a message to book in. We also have some really useful FREE resources on our website to help anyone struggling. 💚 #cardifftherapy #cardifftherapist #onlinetherapy #anxiety #panicattacks #panicattackhelp #grieftherapy #mentalhealthmatters

My search for ways to calm my nervous system started over 34 years ago, not long after I gave birth to my first child. I didn’t feel depressed, not at the beginning, but I did feel anxious, and that anxiety morphed into terrible, all-consuming panic attacks that I still suffer from today. Over the years, I have done thousands of hours of research trying to find techniques that can help me. About 18 months ago, I came across a method called Jin Shin Jyutsu – a Japanese healing art where you place your hands on certain locations on your body to harmonize the energy flow. I was so impressed by the results that I bought two books on the subject – “The Art of Jin Shin” by Alexis Brink and “Jin Shin Healing Touch” by Tina Stümpfig. I recommend both of them. There are lots of different routines in the books, but the simplest is to hold each finger until you start to feel your mind and body relax. Each finger has a different emotion attached to it – the thumb is worry, the index finger is fear, the middle finger is anger, the ring finger is sadness and the little finger is self-esteem. I still have a long way to go in calming the fight, flight and freeze response in my body, but practicing Jin Shin Jyutsu helps. I hope it can help you as well ❤️ #anxiety #depression #ptsd #panicattacks #safespace #sanctuary #haven #retreat #nobulliesallowed #selfcare #selfhelp #jinshin #jinshinjyutsu #holdfingers #artofjinshin #jinshinhealingtouch

I don't always love how mental illness is represented in the media. Back in 2017, I very much had to be 'the victim' in order to gain coverage for my book, rather than a person with a dodgy brain, managing it openly & proactively. Journalists wanted the gory details about my lowest points, things that could be used later as soundbites. They asked triggering questions without checking first if it was OK & they were obsessed with my age... WHAT'S ALL THAT ABOUT BTW? And I did it. I did all of it because I wanted that coverage & part of me was flattered to have the attention. It took a while to realise that there was a price... & that price was a piece of my soul. These days, I say no to more than I do, yes. A lot has changed & we've come a long way, but I'm still mindful of the narrative when it comes to the brain. People who live with mental illness are some of the bravest & strongest I've ever met & I wouldn't insult them or myself by pretending otherwise. #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthawarenessweek #mhaw #anxiety #anxietyawareness #panicattack #panicattacks #mentalhealth #mentalillness #writersofinstagram

I took this picture in Central Park, NYC in 2018 ( not 2024 as the Dazz camera says!) I was travelling solo across America which, at one point in my life, is something I thought would always be an impossibility. I spent many years suffering from agoraphobia and severe social anxiety. I was stuck in my home. I couldn’t face the world and everything terrified me. It was sheer hard work that got me to the place where I could get on a plane and fly across the Atlantic. FYI, I loved every second of America 🇺🇸 #anxietysupport #anxietysurvivor #agoraphobiarecovery #agorafobia #agoraphobia #socialanxietydisorder #socialanxiety #anxietyrecovery #solotraveler #solotravel #americanroadtrip #americantravel #uktousa #panicdisorderawareness #panicattacks
