Have you ever wondered if you can communicate with your subconscious mind? The answer is not only a resounding yes, but it's also something we do every day without even realising it. ⠀ ⠀ Our subconscious is incredibly powerful, influencing our beliefs, our reactions, and even our daily decisions. To resolve fears and phobias, we need to learn how to communicate with our subconscious in its own language. After all, when we were thinking about what we wanted to be when we grew up, I doubt many of us chose to have a serious irrational fear that impacts our daily lives. ⠀ ⠀ In my practice, I've explored various techniques that facilitate this communication, helping to reshape fears and overcome deep-seated phobias. ⠀ ⠀ For example, through guided visualisations, we can consciously direct our subconscious to alter our responses to fear. This is done by creating new, positive associations in place of old, negative ones. It's like editing a playlist, swapping out songs that make you sad for tracks that make you smile.⠀ ⠀ Other techniques, such as hypnotherapy and meditation, are designed to bridge the gap between our conscious desires and our subconscious patterns. In fact, one study found that hypnotherapy reduced phobia symptoms by over 50% in all subjects. ⠀ ⠀

There’s a great deal of narrative that exists regarding listening to your body and your emotions. While sometimes that can be helpful advice, it can also be wildly unhelpful. Like pretty much everything when it comes to mental health, it’s a big case of “it depends”. Would I want you never to listen to anxiety or your threat response? Of course not. Would I also want you to acknowledge that we can experience anxiety and the threat response in situations where that response is unnecessary and there is no actual danger present? Also yes. I’m going to put back another post on this topic up in my stories if you want more information on this (read the caption if you’re interested in learning more).   #panic #panicattacks #fear #anxiety #panicdisorder #fightorflight #fightflightfreeze #cognitivebehavioraltherapy #clinicalpsychologist #mentalhealthawareness #anxietytips #anxietyrecovery #evidencebasedtreatment #cbtworks #socialanxiety #generalizedanxietydisorder #agoraphobia #fearresponse #discomfort #davidrose #danlevy #schittscreek #emotionalreasoning #psychologistsofinstagram #therapistsofinstagram #obsessivecompulsivedisorder #avoidance

💥 Neuroscientists have discovered a new pathway in the brain that is responsible for panic-like behaviors. The pathway, called PACAPPBL→DR, involves neurons in the lateral parabrachial nucleus (PBL) that produce pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP). Activation of these neurons leads to panic-like responses in mice, while inhibition reduces panic. Researchers believe that understanding and targeting this pathway could lead to the development of new therapies for panic disorder. This study sheds light on the complex neural mechanisms underlying fear, anxiety, and panic, and opens up new possibilities for treatment. ⭕ Salk Institute for Biological Studies #panicdisorder #neuroscience #fearresponse #brainpathways #therapeutictargets #anxietytreatment #mentalhealth #research #neuralcircuits #panicattacks

I have talked extensively on fear in past blogs. This blog is about the body’s response to fear and how it changes our bodies chemical makeup. There are over 200 chemicals (hormones) that react when we experience a stressful event, perceived as a threat. Hesitation is such a common yet fleeting feeling, often occurring mere moments before an ultimate decision. This instinctive pause is intertwined with moral choices, offering us a moment to confirm where we stand on the spectrum of good and bad, right and wrong. Hesitation can be the difference between cautious wisdom and paralyzing fear, as it taps into your primitive flight/fight/freeze response, often exacerbated by anxiety.  Ep. 49: “Is Hesitation A Dork Impulse?” — now streaming on all podcast platforms #hesitation #hesitate #fear #fearless #fearresponse #anxiety #anxietyproblems #spiritual #spirituality #spiritualmemes #spiritualitymemes #spiritualpodcast #spiritualitypodcast #spiritualgrowth #spiritualjourney #newpodcast #anxietymemes #anxietymemesofinsta #newpodcastalert #newpodcastepisode #podcastrecommendation #newage #newagespirituality #newagedeception #toxicspirituality #spiritualbypassing #podcastersofinstagram

Cleft lip and Palate Awareness week Day two ❤️ When I was told our first born daughter would be born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate I unknowingly entered into a fear response. Let me clarify, I knew I was fearful, what I didn’t know was the impact of this on my body and in my body. What I didn’t know was that as I turned all my attention to her and her needs, my fear got stuck. This doesn’t sound very articulate of me. But I want this post to be very clear. Fear is not the problem. It’s understandable and we need that mobilised energy. The problem was that I didn’t understand my body’s response. I didn’t understand how my experiences and thoughts and feelings about these impacted my physical health. The fear response didn’t integrate because it was unable to be acknowledged, fully felt and understood by me and many of us who feel it. It’s too much. As mums of children who have medical needs we get on, we push through, we hold ourselves to such high standards to be the very best we can be for our children. When we have a child who faces challenges and uncertainties our bodies and brains enter a pretty constant sympathetic nervous system state and we don’t even know this. If we had challenges ourselves growing up, especially those that made us feel we needed to get on with it, the MI5 light of interrogation is going to shine so brightly upon these, and we don’t even know it. We keep on keeping on. We say, ‘ I’m fine’ because we are right? Others have it so much worse. This is needed, oftentimes this is really needed and necessary. With surgeries, feeding issues, appointments most if not every week, not even mentioning the hormonal, identity blur, brain fog issues we all go through when we first become mothers. It’s a survival response, even though we are not fighting for our lives, our body and brain’s response is the same. When we cannot integrate and understand this, we then live from this place. We parent from this place. We make daily decisions from this place. It’s exhausting. And it’s completely unconscious. Continued in comments xx

The fears I have are mostly emotional. I’m grateful I don’t have to be afraid of a wild animal attacking me, or that I won’t have enough food to eat. 🙏 My fears are more along the lines of… 😱Am I worthy of love? 😱What type of world will my children inherit? 😱Do I have what it takes to meet the challenges of life? But my nervous system reacts the same way to the fear of strong emotions as it does to actual threats to my life. The natural, automatic, and instinctual reactions to fear accumulate and are stored as tension in the body, and the tension fools us into thinking we have a sense of control. We can react to fear with the 5 F’s: fight, flight, freeze, fawn, or flop. And these reactions can become ingrained and habitual. We can get stuck using them as coping strategies that shape every decision we make. They can become a way we move through the world no matter what the situation. 💪In May, Kundalini Yoga & Meditation classes will focus on practices to help us shift out of habitual nervous system responses (the 5 F’s). 💞This will allow us to welcome relaxation, balance, and presence. Life can be lived in harmony with the present, instead of through a lens of past fears. ➡️May 1: Fight ➡️May 8: Flight ➡️May 15: Freeze ➡️May 22: Fawn ➡️May 29: Flop ✅9:15-10:15 am at The Innerwork Center ❤️All are welcome #fearresponse #fight #flight #freeze #fawn #flop #nervoussystemhealing #kundaliniyoga

Justin Feinstein is one of the few scientists who have been able to study a woman who has zero fear response. To protect the woman’s identity, this subject is known only as “S.M.”, and Feinstein has had the opportunity to work with her under laboratory conditions and in real world scenarios (e.g. coffee meeting, sporting event, professional conference etc.) for the past 15 years as of 2018. S.M.’s lack of fear has had unexpected consequences within her life, as she displays no sense of typical fear induced scenarios (e.g. personal space, feeling completely comfortable being nose to nose with a complete stranger as the concept of personal space and discomfort has no meaning), heightened by the fact that S.M. does not produce typical signals of distrust when interacting with a novel person. S.M. lacks fear because she is without her amygdala, a physical trait observed in very few human beings, making S.M. one of the only people in the world to produce this physiology. S.M. has no amygdala because she has been diagnosed with Urbach-Wiethe Disease (pronounced “urr-bock vee-they”). The underlying etymology of Urbach-Wiethe Disease is still unknown but in patients with the condition, specific portions of the brain, in both hemispheres, can become subject to selective calcification which erodes the ability to function as designed. The amygdala acts as a sentry for potential fearful stimuli, and produces a response accordingly... Polyvagal Theory teaches us that our bodies have different states, like the “green zone” when we feel calm and safe, the “yellow zone” when we feel a little worried or nervous, and the “red zone” when we feel really scared or upset. Understanding the autonomic nervous system (ANS) helps us recognize our body’s reactions and learn how to regulate our emotions. #polyvagal #polyvagaltheory #polyvagalparenting #polyvagaltheoryintherapy #stevenporges #vagus #vagusnervestimulation #vagusnervehealing #internalfamilysystems #ifstherapy #trauma #traumahealing #traumarecovery #ptsd #ptsdrecovery #anxiety #mentalhealth #therapy #therapist #psychotherapist #psychotherapy #lgbtqiaplus #vagusnerveexercises #psychology #dissociation #fightorflightresponse #fear #fearresponse #neurobiology

Emotional Release can help address attachment wounds, here's how: So you find yourself in similar patterns, attracting the same types of relationships, or coping in ways you wished were different? Our attachment system and fear system are intertwined. In fact, how we learnt to react to fear in earlier years speaks to how we navigate relationships today. Allowing the unfelt fearful parts of ourselves and repatterning the beliefs we hold about ourselves and the people in our lives is key! Understanding the 4 F’s: Fight, Flight, Freeze, and Fawn Responses to Threat Biological responses are instinctual reactions that occur in the face of perceived threats or danger. These responses are deeply rooted in the body’s physiological mechanisms and are designed to enhance survival in threatening situations. The feelings of fear come from the reptilian part of the brain called the amygdala. It is a behaviour the is instinctual. It was instinct and instinct alone that made us search for food, shelter, and a suitable mate. Day by day year by year season by season the behaviours repeat because the instinct worked for our survival. But what would happen if we experienced war, or an accident or a traumatic event or multiple events of some caliber, then how does the amygdala respond? In practice I call this a thinking mistake, I don’t like to say that the amygdala has it wrong cause it is all instinctual. I like to think of it as misfiring the instinct to run fast, fight hard, or freeze quietly behind a bush. I SUDDENLY FELT SUPER NERVOUS TODAY…. I was in an unusual assessment-type situation with multiple people watching (literally judging) me. I was being rushed. All of a sudden I was jittery. My voice shook. I was out of breath. I didn’t think I would feel so nervous (I had no real reason to), but then out of the blue my brain didn’t work. I was doing something I’ve done thousands of times before, clearly and confidently, something I could almost do in my sleep. But I fumbled and made a silly mistake. I didn’t know my left from my right. Then the whole thing was over as quickly as it started. So how can we process this rush of emotion? 1. NAME IT to tame it. The nervousness I experienced in my body is otherwise known as FEAR. And then I felt embarrassed to come across incompetent and making a rookie mistake (=SHAME). 2. Separate thoughts from the emotion. (In this case I wasn’t having too many thoughts - I’m so used to doing this process by now…) 3. Take the surrounding thoughts with a grain of salt. The tendency is to translate emotion into thoughts, for example: I COULD have told myself some story that they all thought I was ridiculous, or that I was an idiot, or that I’m not good enough, or something more catastrophic. Our thoughts tend not to be very reliable when we are emotionally triggered! 🛑 I could have kept thinking about all that and playing the scenario back in my mind again and again, feeling more and more terrible about it… But instead I acknowledge: I felt nervous, I felt some fear and I didn’t perform at my usual level. But I wasn’t in danger. I’m still not in danger now. And I know I am more competent than how I came across (even if THEY don’t know it). The whole situation has passed. It’s over. But I’m not scared of my emotions anymore. I came home, had dinner and some nice cuddles with my kids and dogs. I was able to enjoy my evening and be present to my family. Was it a pleasant experience? No. Do I wish it had gone differently? Definitely. But I’m not hung up on it. Not going to blow it out of proportion or let it ruin my night. I am not my emotions. I don’t need to fear them. #emotionalquotes #emotionaltriggers

Fear is an important component of the human experience and there are ways our brains and bodies respond to fear to keep us safe in potentially dangerous situations. The fear response is activated when: - We are in actual danger - We believe we are in danger - Or we experience “scary” stimuli (eg. horror movies) This week we will be going through each of these responses, so stay tuned! #teahousetherapy #fearresponse #fear
