I DIDN’T TRUST HER! 😳The woman who WALKS with GOD. The woman who God put so much inside of. HIS WORD is written on the tables of her heart. I didn’t trust her. The woman who God delivered. The woman who knows her God. The woman who cannot fail, because GOD is within her according to the Scriptures. NOPE. I didn’t trust her!…And what I found out was… Most of what I thought or felt, I found over time to be true. (yeah, “her” is me) I ignored my gut and my first mind, because of insecurity and fear. But, all along…I was right! But it’s not that I was right, it’s GOD in me! So it really was never about me or trusting me, but trusting in GOD in me. Bible Food for Thought: “Trust in the Lord and do not lean on your own understanding.” It’s a command! We must TRUST in the LORD! But can you blame me for not trusting a world that bred me into a sticky web, swathing me in silken terror from the start? How am I not to expect fangs? I watched my mother become illegible in front of me, watched my father erase her leaden daydreams, and snap her yellow wooden body in half over our rancid trashcan, coated in brown sludge and crumbs. I know what love looks like. I know that it is crude. I know that it hurts. I know that it is always out of my control. You tell me you built this house for us; the space above the fireplace is specifically designed to hang our wedding portrait, yet I still put my knuckle to the wall, checking for studs. I do not believe something is sturdy simply because a man tells me it will hold up. You bound into the kitchen, out of breath, while I am slicing pears at the counter and ask if I will come see your new heart. Your body buzzing like a kid begging a parent to inspect a newly tidied bedroom, you lead me through the wallpapered hallway giddily until we arrive at your freshly scrubbed soul. As I stand in the doorway, the progress looks blurry. The tears have not yet cleared, and I am still seeing double, but I can tell that you worked hard here. I am starting to realize that the progress I couldn’t see before is the progress I’ve been purposely looking away from. Oddity You ask me, “Why poetry?” Poetry is ministry. When I writhe through hell on my hands and knees, poetry is the merciful god that sings salvation to my soul. I drink from its wells. Its sweet water quells and soothes my savage thirst. I am made whole. Poetry is every bit the sacrificial lamb, ensuring me a place in eternity, where I will dwell inside the palace of its wonder. Why poetry? I view the world through the lens of verse. I hear secrets of the Blue Ridges Mountains. Fountains pour forth and I must spill ink across valleys and hills. I must sing the starling’s song. I must merge with the spirits of loyal old dogs. Should I leave a legacy, I beseech thrones existing somewhere in sacred spaces, that it would be stanzas that brought hope, or passion, or truth, or compassion, or empathy to those who need a voice. Why poetry? It is all things stitched by seams of simile, tied, sometimes un-neatly, with ribbons of metaphor. It is a place where truth and lies coincide harmoniously. It is untamed desire. It is wildfire sweeping into hearts and minds of we one-of-a-kinds. It is madness and peace and all things in between. Why poetry? It is therapy. I find my healing inside its rhyme. My mind, my body, my soul; they all seek wholeness, homeostasis. Uproarious laughter or bitter tears, poetry is a testament to years I have survived, despite the odds. It remains my most steadfast companion, my spirit animal, my spirit guide; down paths angels fear to trod. It accepts me as the oddity I am; the oddity I am proud to be. This is why. This is why. The silence of this world is terrifying. I have this horrible, horrible terror in my gut. Fear is like acid in my mouth. The world leaders are useless. Incompetent.
