Q: "Isn't it a myth that babies can self-soothe? Shouldn't we just hold them more?" A: Not a myth! While cuddling our babies is WONDERFUL, holding them to sleep every night can lead to serious sleep deprivation, especially as they grow beyond the newborn stage. Sleep deprivation can significantly exacerbate the symptoms of postpartum depression and anxiety. The lack of restful sleep not only affects mood and emotional regulation but can also intensify feelings of sadness, irritability, and stress. Prioritizing adequate sleep and seeking support can play a crucial role in easing the burden of postpartum mental health challenges. Let's find a balance that fosters their independence and ensures well-deserved rest for all. #BabySleepMyths #SelfSoothingFacts #SleepBalance #CuddleLove #WellDeservedRest #ParentingTruths #SleepWell #PostpartumSupport #SleepExperts #SleepDeprivationEffects #PostpartumDepression #PostpartumAnxiety #MentalHealthChallenges #SleepAndMood #EmotionalWellbeing #PrioritizeSleep #SeekingSupport #RestfulSleep

There are some things you should know about your mental health after birth. It's not uncommon to struggle with your mental health after birth. It's believed that 1 in 5 will experience PMADs (perinatal mood and anxiety disorders), but there's even more to know. PMADs can show up at any time during pregnancy and days or even months after birth. 10% of dads and partners may experience mood or anxiety problems. Early screening and intervention are essential to protect the mother, baby, and family. 🌟 2 months old! (I took the picture on the right day! I am late to post 😆) How's Nora? The poor girl has been snotty for her whole life, thanks to being the youngest. She failed the hearing screen and we ventured up to PCH to check. Her ears are full of fluid, but she's fine (and she can hear!) She's been sleeping a lot still (probably because she's snotty), but she has been playing, smiling and hanging out with us more. She loves her sisters and has learnt to flinch as they run towards her. How am I? Mostly good. There was a Mum at Mother's group who answered this question with "today is a cry day, so if the slightest hiccup happens I'm going to seem dramatic, but yesterday I was far more reasonable." I was so impressed that she was able to tell a room full of new parents, trying to put their best foot forward, the truth. It's true, today is (so far) not a cry day. I have been getting very stressed and easily overwhelmed. My headspace has been a bit of a mess. I started to realise just how messy and I'm keeping tabs on it. I'm getting frustrated with everything I want to be doing, but at this stage, I just can't. Whether it's not a priority or it's physically not an option for me right now. I'm trying to remember @mamamatters.au mantra that I'm "Doing Important Work" by being present for our girls. I am doing it! And I'm bloody good at it! For now, that is enough. . . . The transition to parenthood, whether it's the first time or you've done it a bunch of times, is HARD. You're recovering physically, you're trying to find your footing and your new identity as a parent, and a tiny human is 100% dependent on you for EVERYTHING. When you're visiting with or talking to a new parent who is struggling, be mindful of your words. Instead of saying "Parenthood is just the greatest!" try ➡ "Is there anything you're struggling with that you want to talk about?" and really listen to them. Instead of "You just need to get outside more and get some fresh air!" try ➡ "Are you open to talking to a doctor or therapist?" Instead of saying "Well, you wanted to be a mom, so..." try this ➡ "Your feelings are real and valid, but you don't have to feel like this. You can get help if you need it." Instead of "Oh, I never felt like that. I thought the newborn phase was great!" try ➡ "You're not alone, and it's okay that this phase is hard. Are you open to talking to someone?" If you need help or support: 🔷 Call or text the Postpartum Support International HelpLine at 800-944-4773. Happy #SelfCareSunday! 💕 Often when we hear "self care," we think of bubble baths and naps and treating ourselves. And all of those are great things that we should do for ourselves! But sometimes, self care means doing some non-tangible things that may not feel very good, but in the long run, will help you feel better and protect your peace. Self care also means... 🌷 Asking for help when you need it 🌷 Setting and maintaining boundaries 🌷 Taking a break when you need to 🌷 Unplugging from your electronic devices (don't be doom scrolling) 🌷 Taking time for yourself (even if it's only for 10 minutes!) 🌷 Saying no when you need to 🌷 Loving all of yourself 🌷 Giving yourself grace Take the bubble bath, journal, treat yourself. But also remember to protect your mental health, your time, and your heart by caring for yourself in all ways 💕 If you need help and support: 🌸 Call or text the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline at 1-833-852-6262 🌸 Call or text the Postpartum Support International HelpLine at 800-944-4773 🌸 For a crisis situation, call or text the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 #momsupport #momssupportingmoms #ppa #ppd #postpartumdepressionsurvivor #moms #momsofinstagram #parents #postpartum #newmoms #postpartumdepression #maternalmentalhealth #momlife #fourthtrimester #beyondppd #pmads #postpartumanxiety #parenthood #postpartumhealth #mentalhealth #newparents #motherhood #maternalmentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthmatters #perinatalmentalhealth #pregnancy

EP #12 now available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and I heart radio! Link in bio 🫶🏼 In todays episode Tahlee talks about her experience with Type 1 Diabetes during her pregnancy and how she managed her health, incluing mental health and what decisions she made in regard to her birth and her chosen model of care. Tahlee talks about the experience of going on to develop Preeclampsia around 34.5 weeks, that was so severe she spent time in ICU prior to the decision being made to birth her baby via caesarean at almost 35 weeks. Through this experience Tahlee emphasises the importance of seeking medical help if experiencing symptoms of any kind that seem abnormal and urges people not to be afraid to contact their maternity ward for assistance. Tahlee discusses what it was like not recalling her son being born and the experience of been separated following his birth for 24 hours. His stay in NICU was heartbreaking and challenging, particularly going home without your baby and has had some impact to Tahlees mental health. #pregnancy #birth #birthstory #preeclampsia #preeclampsiaawarnessmonth #csection #icu #breastfeedingchallenges #nicu #motherhood #navigatingmotherhood #parentingpodcast #prenatalanxiety #postpartumanxiety #motherandbaby #mumlife #cesarean

It’s hard to describe what postpartum depression and anxiety feel like unless you’ve experienced it yourself. When you’re in it, it can feel like no one else can possibly understand what you are going through. The feelings of helplessness and hopelessness they trigger can be all consuming. The sensation of one’s body being unable to regulate and feel calm can make a person feel that they are being held hostage in their own body. And the worst part? It feels like it is permanent. When I was in the thick of my PPD/PPA, I was convinced that I would fall outside of the statistics and be the one person whose postpartum depression and anxiety would never go away. But guess what? I was absolutely wrong. Postpartum depression and anxiety are very treatable. So if you are experiencing PPD or PPA, here are some ways to get help: ⭐️Be honest with your partner or support network about what you’re really thinking and feeling ⭐️Access free peer support through Pacific Postpartum Support Society (in British Columbia) ⭐️Connect with a counsellor who specializes in postpartum depression and anxiety (see link in bio to book a session with me) ⭐️Ask your GP for a referral to the reproductive mental health program ⭐️If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, your baby, or anyone else, please call 911 or visit your nearest emergency department I know it doesn’t feel like it right now, but this excruciating time WILL pass. #postpartumdepression #postpartumanxiety #ppd #ppdawareness #maternalmentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmonth #newmom #newparents #postpartum #mentalhealthmatters #youarenotalone #registeredcounsellor #perinatalmentalhealth

💯🔥It’s Okay to Ask for Help or Take a Break from Being Aware of Your Body!📌A friend of mine recently embarked on the rollercoaster journey of motherhood. In a recent conversation we had, body positivity in postpartum was the main topic. 🤔 #blog #linkinbio #blogpost #blogger 🤱🏻👶🏽The journey of bringing a new life into this world is nothing short of miraculous, but it also comes with its own set of physical and emotional challenges. In the midst of sleepless nights, diaper changes, and endless feedings, it’s easy to lose sight of ourselves and our bodies. 🩱👙 😵‍💫However, amidst this chaos, there lies an opportunity for profound self-love and acceptance. Join me as we delve into the importance of nurturing body positivity in the postpartum phase and embracing the beauty of our evolving selves.🤗💗 🤱🏽Amidst the joy and wonder of bringing a human earthside, some people experience an emerging or re-emerging sense of insecurity about their postpartum body… Which makes sense right?❓ 🤔 🏙Society bombards us with images of celebrities “bouncing back” to their pre-baby weight and routines often within weeks of delivery, setting unrealistic standards that leave many of us feeling inadequate.🏋🏽🔥💪🏼🏃‍♀🧘🏻‍♀️👟 ❄️But the truth is, everyone’s postpartum journey is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to recovery or the journey we may take with our bodies after birth.🤱🤱🏻🤱🏽👩‍🍼🧑🏻‍🍼 #postpartum #postpartumbody #postpartumhealth #postpartumjourney #postpartumanxiety #postpartumsupport #postpartumfitness #postpartumrecovery #postpartumweightloss

Embracing the journey of motherhood means acknowledging the tough days while cherishing the moments of joy. Children are not the source of our struggles; they are our greatest teachers of patience, love, and resilience. One thing that I teach (and practice daily😮‍💨) is mindset shifts. This isn’t just about your nutrition and health, it’s about your personal life too. I used to be the martyr, I used to blame my kids for why I was so tired and angry and anxious and anything else. Now, I own it. I own that my kids are not the cause of my feelings, they’re gifts, they’re blessings they’re teachers but they are not burdens. Every aspect of our life suffers when we put our problems on our kids. Let’s work together to learn how not to💞 #MotherhoodUnfiltered #EmpoweredMoms #MomLife #MentalHealth #Motherhood #MotherhoodMentalHealth #Holistic #CrunchyMom #NutritionForMoms #Nutrition #PrenatalNutrition #PostpartumNutrition #Postpartum #Birth #PPD #PPA #PostpartumDepression #PostpartumAnxiety #NewMom #FunctionalNutrition #FunctionalLabs #HealthPractitioner

Something I struggled with more than I thought I would after having my children was my body image and feeling like my body wasn't mine. Twice I was literally sharing it for 9 months when I was pregnant with each of my babies, but then after they were born, my body still didn't feel like mine. It felt new, strange, and squishy, like I was living in a place I had never been. Something that has helped me feel like I'm reclaiming my body as mine has been working out and strength training with a personal trainer. I'm still working on loving my new body (and yes, I know it has done amazing things and I'm forever grateful for how it safely housed and grew my babies), but feeling stronger and seeing results has helped. Working out and moving my body helps me feel better mentally and physically, and even on days when I don't want to get up and go to the gym, I always feel better leaving than when I got there. Body image postpartum is such a thorny subject. You're grateful for everything your body has done, but it doesn't feel like yours, and some things are permanently changed (even if I was the exact same weight I was before I got pregnant with my daughter, my clothes from then still wouldn't fit right - I have hips and curves I didn't have before!). There is no bouncing back, but there is bouncing forward, and finding ways to accept and love the new you 💕 So much love to @studio_fitnez, my first trainer @alspaugh.ashley who got me through my second pregnancy, and my current trainer @kimber_via_fitness for showing me what I'm truly capable of 💪 #momsupport #momssupportingmoms #ppa #ppd #moms #postpartumdepressionsurvivor #momsofinstagram #parents #postpartum #newmoms #postpartumdepression #maternalmentalhealth #momlife #beyondppd #fourthtrimester #pmads #postpartumanxiety #parenthood #postpartumhealth #mentalhealth #newparents #motherhood #maternalmentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthmatters #perinatalmentalhealth #pregnancy

Isn’t it funny how people react to big families sometimes? I was really afraid to tell people because sometimes reactions can be harsh and even though she was unexpected (especially after all the female problems I’ve had in the past), we believe every child is a special gift. Happy Saturday! 💕☀️ Little update-Yesterday I filmed and am currently working on editing the video. It has been a while since I have done this and I obviously am limited in my work window (my sons nap time) SO if I can get it done before he wakes up here shortly then I will have it uploaded TONIGHT! If not then it will be available to watch tomorrow. I will announce when it is on Youtube of course 😊 Anyway, enjoy your weekend everyone! Today I had family over. Of course snuck in my daily walk with my son (there will be two more before tonight I am sure as usual haha) and had my weekend “treat” of a brown sugar oatmilk shaken espresso at SB which I always look forward to! I also have a craft I’d like to make with my son when he wakes to end the evening…While I enjoy weekends I have to say I am REALLY looking forward to Tuesday because I am getting my hair colored for the first time since December. It’s long overdue. If you live in the Cleveland area check out my sister in-laws salon (I will mention below…something I’ll make sure to do in every post if I mention specific people/places 😊) Enjoy your Saturday and Sunday everyone. High functioning anxiety can look like: ▪︎Outgoing personality ▪︎Punctual ▪︎Proactive (smooths things over before there's even a problem) ▪︎Organized (where are my list makers at) ▪︎High-achieving ▪︎Detail-oriented ▪︎Orderly and tidy ▪︎Active ▪︎Helpful ▪︎Appears outwardly calm and collected ▪︎Passionate ▪︎Loyal in relationships But did you know high functioning anxiety can lead to burnout (and can turn into low functioning anxiety). Because you are constantly telling yourself what you are doing isn't enough and you need to do more. It often is associated with people pleasing, constant guilt, poor boundaries, and overworking. High functioning anxiety also tends to have features if obsessive rumination and OCD traits. They are looked at as over achievers and can be completely successful...but feel mentally drained carry excessive worry and self doubt, and have a difficult time if they are not getting the results they used to (A's in school but no praise in the work environment) I love working with recovering people pleaser and helping those high functioning anxious clients preserve their energy and work on self compassion... because you are doing enough. . . . . . . . . . . #peoplepleaser #highfunctioninganxiety #anxiety #postpartum #postpartumanxiety #anxiousmom #therapy #mentalhealth #holdingspace #therapistsofinstagram #traumarecovery #trauma

If I started again, here’s 3 things I would do to fight Postpartum Depression (PPD) 1️⃣ Seek Professional Help Sooner - Many mothers delay seeking help due to stigma or not recognizing the symptoms. If I could do it over, I would prioritize my mental health and reach out to a healthcare professional earlier. Getting the right support, whether through therapy, medication, or a combination of both, can significantly improve recovery and overall well-being. 2️⃣ Build a Support Network - I would work on establishing a strong support system before and after childbirth. This includes involving family, friends, and support groups. Sharing my struggles with trusted individuals would have made me feel less isolated and provided practical help and emotional support during tough times. 3️⃣ Practice Self-Compassion - I would focus more on being kind to myself and letting go of unrealistic expectations. Understanding that PPD is a medical condition and not a personal failing would help me to be more patient and forgiving towards myself. Prioritizing self-care, even in small ways, would contribute to my healing process. By implementing these changes, the journey through postpartum depression might have been less overwhelming and more manageable. #postpartumdepression #postpartum #postpartumanxiety #mentalhealth #postpartumjourney #motherhood #depression #anxiety #momlife #pregnancy #ppd #postpartumsupport #maternalmentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #newmom #postpartumbody #postpartumhealth #selfcare #mentalhealthmatters #depressionawareness #depressionhelp #postpartumlife #parenting #mom #postpartumfitness #perinatalmentalhealth #selflove #depressionsupport

"Isn't this just the happiest time of your life?" There is a lot of pressure in this statement. Moms may feel like they need to smile and nod enthusiastically, because that is what is expected of them. ➡ This is where the power of the word "AND" is so important. ⬅️ ✨You can love your baby dearly AND feel overwhelmed. ✨You can be grateful AND experienced postpartum depression or anxiety. ✨You can feel blessed AND not feel the happiest you've ever been in your life. This is okay. Both can exist. You are still a great mom if you feel ALL these things! . . 70-80% of moms will experience intrusive thoughts at some point during motherhood. And yet when they happen, you feel like a terrible mom. You feel you are the only one having them. You worry you are going crazy. Inturisve thoughts are scary and disturbing but they do not mean you will act on them. It is your brains way of figuring out ways to keep your baby safe, in that having the thought helps you find ways to NOT have those situations be true. Intrusive thoughts are JUST thoughts. They don't meant you want to act on it. They don't mean anything about you as a mom. They are not premonitions . Even though no one talks about them for fear of judgment, talking about them can be one of the best things to help quiet them. If you experience thoughts like this, try these strategies: 💫Text a friend or talk to your partner 💫Say "This is an intrusive thought, but not a real thought" 💫Find evidence from reality for why it isn't true orw on't happen 💫Come up with a plan for how to handle when these thoughts come up 💫Talk to a professional ❤️Comment TRIBE and I'll send you my resource list of where to get professional and peer support. 👋🏻Follow @mytribecare for more maternal mental health resources, relatable motherhood and a community of parents that get it. #ppa #anxiousmom #pmad #ppd #postpartumanxiety #postpartummentalhealth #perinatalmentalhealth #postpartumsupport #4thtrimester #newmomtips #momshelpingmoms #newmomlife #lifeasmama #overwhelmedmom #momstruggle #maternalmentalhealthmatters #momsmatter #survivingmotherhood #momthoughts

#postpartumdepressie #postpartumhealth #postpartumanxiety #babyblues #grijzewolk #natuurlijk

It might be time to take a break today. Remember who is watching you Mother 👁 Taking the time to slow down; tune in with the body, be conscious our needs and boundaries…and honour them 🔥 Might be the *greatest* gift we could give to our children in this fast paced world. We have been taught to pedal forwards even when our body is crying out for rest. How do we know this is causing harm? We feel it in our body, our hearts and our minds. Modelling self love & care is far more important than we could imagine. 💖 Do you really, truly rest?

The short answer: It just makes sense! Fertility journeys, pregnancy, birthing, and the postpartum period constantly draw your attention closely to your body. Your physical experiences impact your emotions, and your psychological states can create and exacerbate your physical experiences. This reality can feel extra complicated in the perinatal period, but can also be viewed as an invitation to become more connected to yourself, which is needed for inner healing processes to take place.

The birds were singing. Despite it pouring, they were still chirping away like nothing was bothering them. So, why couldn’t I continue walking? I was literally just minutes into my walk when the rain started. But, I knew that my feet would stay dry, so it really didn’t bother me. I felt like my whole body was crying. Like, a good, deep, heart-wrenching sob. Which is always followed by the inevitable splitting headache and red, puffy eyes. Then someone always asks if I’m ok, when clearly I’m not, always causing me to lose the composure I literally had just pulled together, grasping desperately to not appear weak or overly emotional. The rain felt wonderfully refreshing to my body, and my soul. I glanced down at my dry feet, looking past my stomach protruding in a less than appealing manner, thanks to my postpartum body never being the same again. I couldn’t help but wonder… is this what peace feels like? Knowing that, despite all circumstances, my feet were dry. It didn’t matter that my hair was soaked through, as that’s future Sarah’s problem. Or that my pants were uncomfortably sticky and wet. I could rest in knowing – beyond a shadow of a doubt – that my feet would still be dry. That the rain wouldn’t be an issue. Because of this knowledge, I was able to press on. I was able to push through. mama… what does peace look like for you? 🤍 #MamasWithDepression #MotherhoodAndHumour #VulnerabilityAndHumour #YoureNotAloneMama #JoinTheMamaJourney #PostPartumDepression #PostPartumAnxiety #PPAD #LetsBeRealMama #MamaSupport #MamaAdvice #UndepressedMama #ShoesOfPeace #DryFeetDontCare #VessisForTheWin @Vessi #WhatDoesPeaceFeelLike Follow along for advice and support as I share my own journey with vulnerability and humour. When you're visiting a new parent, we should be mindful of what we're saying and asking them. Instead of: "You don't even look like you had a baby!" try this ➡ "You're doing a great job!" Instead of: "Is the baby baby sleeping through the night yet?" try ➡ "What can I do so that you can get some rest?" Instead of "Is she a good baby?" try ➡ "Is there anything you're struggling with? How can I help you?" Instead of "Isn't parenthood just amazing?" try ➡ "How are you adjusting to parenthood? Is there anything you want to talk about?" What did you wish someone had said to you when you a new parent? If you need help or support: 🔷 Call or text the Postpartum Support International HelpLine at 800-944-4773. In honor of Maternal Mental Health month, I wanted to share this again. Note: this👆 baby just turned ten. ☺️ I gave birth to my first child, a healthy, full-term baby on April 16, 2014. On my son’s second day of life, I lay in the bed, shaking so uncontrollably that my sister and brand-new husband called my midwife to see if I needed to go to the hospital. It was panic. I felt like I’d gotten stuck in that in-between space that mother/birthing parent and baby pass through in the birth process; the baby made it through, but I was somehow irretrievable. I entered into a period of postpartum depression and anxiety so severe that my midwife said it was the worst she’d seen in 37 years. I had a panic attack every time I tried to nurse and my hands felt like fire and I couldn’t hold my baby.  I remember standing over his days-old body on the changing table and weeping heavy tears onto his new skin, thinking that he was looking up at me wishing he’d gotten a better mother. I could barely eat or sleep. I choked on my self-loathing: how could I be so inadequate at something so important?  I wanted to be my best self for this tiny human but I had vanished. For the first time in my life, I was truly afraid of my own mind, and thought it had somehow been irreparably broken. I knew I was a candidate for postpartum depression because I’d struggled with major depression throughout my life and had anxiety during my pregnancy.  But I just didn’t know it would be like that: the immediacy of the suffering so unbearable that I truly didn’t see a way to make it through. I can see how some mothers don’t; it feels untenable to sustain another moment. I’m not an expert nor legally licensed in mental health, but I am happy to be a resource for anyone who finds yourself experiencing the ordeal of postpartum mood distress. I got through with the help of many angels (especially a best friend who just stayed on the phone), as well as antidepressant medication, and, later, my spiritual practice. I know it’s weird and people don’t really reach out to (strangers), but this is not a thing to go alone. ❤️❤️❤️ #maternalmentalhealth #postpartumdepression #postpartumanxiety
